Harbor Freight 38536 Bandfile vs. Proxxon 38536 BSL115/E Bandfile

At first glance, you all must be saying to yourselves, “What are you thinking, Paul – these are not even in the same category.” Well, I own both of them, and after having them both on the bench for jewelry box projects and some touch-up work on guitar bodies, I found out that they both have strengths, weaknesses, and overall, I think it deserved a head-to-head contest. Agreed, the HF is thirty bucks, and the cheapest I found the Proxxon was One hundred and forty,WHEW (I got...

Excellent Belt Sander for Moderate Use

Excellent Belt Sander for Moderate Use

I debated for quite a while before purchasing this sander because of the reviews complaining of drive belt problems, power cord issues, and difficulties in sanding belt alignment. I have had the sander for six months and had none of these problems. I even bought spare drive belts just in case, but I have had no problems with the drive belt. I was concerned with the sanding belt alignment problems mentioned but I found the adjustment quick and reliable. I can switch from one sanding grit to ...

The off switch works

The off switch works

I sand a lot of wood…on average over 200 BF a month. I own a drum sander and use it a lot, but I find that for the final finish a ROS is the best tool. I have owned and used porter cable sanders for the past 5 years and I like them. The 390 low profile is a cut above the others. This tool has been reviewed on LJ’s twice before, but it has been awhile and this tool deserves another mention just to keep it on your radar. It is variable speed….I don’t use that op...

DeWalt 5 inch Random Orbital Sander

DeWalt 5 inch Random Orbital Sander

I’ve had this tool for several years now. I’ve tried to take good care of it and it has taken good care of me. The particular model number is DW26451. Single speed random orbital sander. It takes 5 inch hook and loop (velcro) discs. You can see it here: http://www.dewalt.com/tools/woodworking-sanders-random-orbital-sanders-d26451.aspx. I cribbed the image from their website as well. I’ve been very pleased with it. The thing just works. It’s been completely...

An awesome sander at an awesome price.

An awesome sander at an awesome price.

Now I am not one to have much faith in Ryobi tools at all, but when I saw this sander unopened at a yard sale for $25 I just had to pick it up. I am sure happy I did. This sander is great for sanding any types of curves weather inside or out. The sander comes with 5 different sized rubber fittings that hold sleeves up to 2 inches. The quill stroke on this machine is 5/8”. I was surprised and pleased to find a heavy cast iron top on a Ryobi tool. This thing also has LOTS OF POWER. I ran ...

Great ROS

Great ROS

603 days ago by PittsburghTim | 7 comments »

I purchased this sander over six months ago and am certain that it’s the best ROS that I have ever used. It’s much easier to handle than the older Porter Cable unit that I have borrowed from my father in the past and is light years ahead of the 5” Dewalt that I own in finish, stock removal, and dust collection. It can remove material fast with the heavier grits and leaves a fine finsh as you work up to 240 or 320. The cannister filter that came with it worked very well. ...

Knowing I will soon be deleted I thought I would post a review of the above sander. If I could give it 10 stars I would. Bought it a year ago or more and have put several thousand miles on it, or maybe close to a 1,000 hours on it so I think my review is valid as it didn’t just fall out of the box. being a “Festool” junkie I had the chance top compare sanders and this is the one I chose with no regrets. It lists for around 500 Canadian funds (probably less in the mighty USA). Bein...

Not a big fan

Not a big fan

When I bought my first truckload of wood, I thought that a 6” sander made more sense than a 5”. More surface area, larger handles, etc. It has become a bit of a money pit if nothing else. The sanding discs don’t seem to adhere nearly as good as either of the two 5” sanders that I have despite trying multiple brands. What’s worse is that I bought this at Home Depot and they don’t sell replacement pads, so after driving around town all day I just ende...

What's with HF? Took a chance, yet another gem!

What's with HF? Took a chance, yet another gem!

Now that I’m semi-retired, I have more time to drift through tool stores, home improvement centers, and the like.In HF the other day, noticed the 97593 Magnesium 4X24 Belt Sander on sale for $69.99, usually $79.99. With my 20% coupon, walked the last one out of the store for a ridiculous $55.00 Now I know we all like to think somewhere along the line we graduate from ever using belt sanders ever again, but for some reason their use pops up from time to time, and for me, it always se...
