Aggressive sander has great dust collection at a price.

I haven’t seen any LJ reviews of the RAS. I don’t have a lot of experience with it yet but I’ll share my initial thoughts and update the review later. I bought this sander to hog out rocking chair seats, legs … I used standard 4.5” grinders with abrasive disks or donuts before I got the RAS115. The units without dust collection ports make a big mess very fast. I was looking for an aggressive sander with good dust collection. The RAS is comfortable to ho...

Here’s my woodworking background which may bias your interpretation of the review: I have 20+ years of hobbyist experience. I traveled a lot for work and typically made one big piece of furniture a year. I made a large portion of the furniture in both my houses which includes beds, cabinets, tables, chairs, entertainment centers, and dressers. I’m currently making a Hal Taylor inspired rocking chair. I like high quality tools and I’m willing to pay a premium over entr...

I have been looking for a long time to find a quality built pneumatic sanding drum, and my wife beat me to it. She found this one at Lee Valley Tools, and gave it to me for an early Christmas gift. I purchased half a dozen used wine barrels this Summer and it is the perfect tool for sanding the curved surfaces of the staves. I use my 6”x108” belt sander for doing the edges.

Just ok for price

I’m making a large dining room trestle table and I knew that I would be in sanding hell for awhile. My only ROS is a Bosch 5” which is works great for smaller projects, but for this project I wanted a 6” ROS with better DC and less vibration. Enter the Festool ETS 150/3. A number of reviews I’ve read about this sander have commented on its great DC and minimal vibration, so once I got over the fact that it was $360 it seemed like the right choice for me. After using ...

Not For Everyone But A Great Tool

Not For Everyone But A Great Tool

My buddy VonHagan recommended this sander to me some time ago and I just recently purchased it. My experience with it has been wonderful: no vibration to speak of, sands REALLY fast, and leaves a perfect surface. I bought the Spirit model as it is lighter and cheaper than the Supreme model. I chose the 3/16” orbit (3/32 and 3/8) are also available. I also got the model that connects to vac. Using my dust collector and Abranet discs, sanding is as dust free as it gets. The down side for ...

Exceeded my expectations!

Exceeded my expectations!

I’m impressed with the Ridgid EB 4424 . For a lot of years I’ve been using my drill press with drum sanders to do what I bought this tool for. It’s hard to find drum sanders (that mount in a drill press) that are at least round, if not even concentric to their arbor shafts. For the last few years that more and more spindle sanders have been showing up in the tool catalogs, I’ve been reading the reviews. I was not impressed, although I was ready to try one just because ...

At first glance, you all must be saying to yourselves, “What are you thinking, Paul – these are not even in the same category.” Well, I own both of them, and after having them both on the bench for jewelry box projects and some touch-up work on guitar bodies, I found out that they both have strengths, weaknesses, and overall, I think it deserved a head-to-head contest. Agreed, the HF is thirty bucks, and the cheapest I found the Proxxon was One hundred and forty,WHEW (I got...

Excellent Belt Sander for Moderate Use

Excellent Belt Sander for Moderate Use

I debated for quite a while before purchasing this sander because of the reviews complaining of drive belt problems, power cord issues, and difficulties in sanding belt alignment. I have had the sander for six months and had none of these problems. I even bought spare drive belts just in case, but I have had no problems with the drive belt. I was concerned with the sanding belt alignment problems mentioned but I found the adjustment quick and reliable. I can switch from one sanding grit to ...

I sand a lot of wood…on average over 200 BF a month. I own a drum sander and use it a lot, but I find that for the final finish a ROS is the best tool. I have owned and used porter cable sanders for the past 5 years and I like them. The 390 low profile is a cut above the others. This tool has been reviewed on LJ’s twice before, but it has been awhile and this tool deserves another mention just to keep it on your radar. It is variable speed….I don’t use that op...
