Best sander I have ever used

Best sander I have ever used

This is truly a 5 star sander (unfortunately with a 5 star price to boot). I’ve always been an ROS guy but never able to get a mirror smooth finish without some hand touch-up in certain areas. This sander delivers! The Good Overall Construction This sander is well built. It’s heavy, yet ergonomically pleasing. The front handle comes off if need be. It is solid, quiet, and vibration free. It comes with a dust port fitting, or a dust collection tube with a filter inside (that ...

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

897 days ago by DHS | 6 comments »

I purchased a sanding block for the first time yesterday. I had taken my mother to lunch on Sunday afternoon and then to reward myself for this good deed I visited the local Rockler Woodworking store and browsed the discount racks. I bought some sanding disks, a quart of Titebond III, some space balls, and then just for the heck of it, I purchased a rubber sanding block for $3.99. What a wonderful device. I don’t know why I’ve never used one before. Perhaps it was my abrasive high-school...

Freud Random Orbit Sanding Disks Go the Distance

Freud Random Orbit Sanding Disks Go the Distance

Home Depot switched from Norton 3X to Freud abrasive products. I have tried the 120 grit and 150 grit 5” hook and loop disks, and they work very well. The ceramic blend of abrasives keeps cutting upwards of an hour of continuous sanding. I change them out of habbit, but they look like new and are still making sawdust. I didn’t have any disks come loose from either my Bosch or Dewalt sanders. The disks do not load up with dust like some brands. Cost is cheap – a 50 coun...

Belt failure resulting in expensive repair

Belt failure resulting in expensive repair

I am writing to warn the readers that I had to replace the drive belt internal to my Porter Cable 371 belt sander after only 4 months of use. This is a great tool for the shop for its compact size and ability to remove material fast with good control. The problem is that the unit appeared to overheat and the belt came apart. I took it to a warranty center expecting to have it repaired under warranty but found out it was not covered and the repair cost $49.92. ($11 for the belt and the...

Good Sander

Good Sander

I bought this ROS mainly on the strengths of its dust collection. A number of reviews that I’ve read consistently rated its dust capture better than other ROS (except of course the mighty Festool). After a couple of hours of use, I’m pretty happy with it so far…Pros:great dust captureminimal vibrationcomfortable to useCons:slow material removal1” DC port (would it have killed them to make the port 1 1/4” so as to fit a standard shop vac attachment???)

Sand Devil

Sand Devil

1385 days ago by bluejazz | 5 comments »

I hate sanding. Among woodworkers of course, that about is as unique an impression as ‘Hitler was a bad guy’. This tool truly does make sanding easier. First off, cutting sandpaper and getting it into my 3M sanding block was a major pain. I’m sure there are better choices than 3M in sanding blocks and making your own is an option. But this Sand Devil has been a huge improvement for me. First off even with my Sandpaper cutting jig, cutting to size is burdensome if ...

Aggressive sander has great dust collection at a price.

Aggressive sander has great dust collection at a price.

I haven’t seen any LJ reviews of the RAS. I don’t have a lot of experience with it yet but I’ll share my initial thoughts and update the review later. I bought this sander to hog out rocking chair seats, legs … I used standard 4.5” grinders with abrasive disks or donuts before I got the RAS115. The units without dust collection ports make a big mess very fast. I was looking for an aggressive sander with good dust collection. The RAS is comfortable to ho...

Well, Ms. Santa has been nice to me once again. I casually mentioned this once upon a time to the wife while at Home Depot and lo and behold I find it under the tree. I love this thing! Works great, no complaints. Yes I have used the snot out of it already. I really like the edge sander the best.

Not much to say about this. I needed to finally replace the sanding belt cleaner I had as I had worn it out. (Still on the same belt FWIW). I hopped into Harbor Freight, and picked one of these up. Sale price of $3.99, and since I wasn’t getting anything more expensive, I threw the 20% coupon on it for an additional $.80 savings for a total before tax of $3.19… Got the thing home, and it is EXACTLY the same item as I had purchased at the big name woodworking supply and hardware...

Review: ETS 125 EQ Random Orbital Finish Sander

Review: ETS 125 EQ Random Orbital Finish Sander

REASON I BOUGHT A NEW SANDER: Sanding is not my favorite part of woodworking. I want the best result as quick as possible. I even considered getting a drum sander, but at $800+ and a chunk of floor space, I was reluctant. My DeWalt ROS would leave a lot of swirl marks, costing me time – in finding the swirls marks, and finding them after I started finishing! Also, the DeWalt would not do dust collection well. So, in an effort to finder better sanding down quicker with better dust collec...
