Over the last couple of months both my palm sander and ROS have bit the dust; of course they were about 8 or nine years old. I received this as a fathers day gift and boy am I glad I did. I decided to try out the claims I’ve heard regarding the efficient dust collection and life of the paper, not to mention the speed that it smooths a rough surface. A couple of months back I picked up a Big Leaf Maple slab and had done nothing with it; You can see the rough saw marks in the first pi...

Should last longer than 35 days. Right?

Should last longer than 35 days. Right?

I loved the design of this sander! It is very light, handles are in perfect positions, BUT not impressed with the life of the one I bought. I used it only a few times and it started smoking. It seems to get hot quickly. I have not returned it yet, but I will be very soon. I know I didn’t apply to much pressure because I was just knocking a rough edge down on a 5” corner board. Anyone else have any luck with this sander? I would like to get another but kinda gun shy now̷...

Best sander I have ever used

Best sander I have ever used

This is truly a 5 star sander (unfortunately with a 5 star price to boot). I’ve always been an ROS guy but never able to get a mirror smooth finish without some hand touch-up in certain areas. This sander delivers! The Good Overall Construction This sander is well built. It’s heavy, yet ergonomically pleasing. The front handle comes off if need be. It is solid, quiet, and vibration free. It comes with a dust port fitting, or a dust collection tube with a filter inside (that ...

Bigger is not always better

Bigger is not always better

Sadly this is my one Ridgid tool that has turned out to be a disappointment. I confess that I hate sanding and the thought that a larger, more powerful ROS might get me done sanding sooner may have seduced me into choosing this sander about 18 months ago when my faithful 20 year old Porter Cable gave up the ghost. Unfortunately, when it comes to ROSs, bigger is not always better. This sander is heavy and it’s size makes it cumbersome in many applications as well as being difficult ...

A Great And Simple Little Machine

A Great And Simple Little Machine

I have had this sander for almost a year now and it has been great. I always needed a disc sander but always had trouble trying to pick one. There are many similar ones to the sander that I have and there are also combination units with a disc and a belt. I decided I really only needed the disc since I only sand wooden toy parts, bandsaw boxes, and for shaping plus I have limited shop space. I decided to choose this sander. The 12 inch disc makes for lots of sanding surface which is a big adv...

Aggressive sander has great dust collection at a price.

I haven’t seen any LJ reviews of the RAS. I don’t have a lot of experience with it yet but I’ll share my initial thoughts and update the review later. I bought this sander to hog out rocking chair seats, legs … I used standard 4.5” grinders with abrasive disks or donuts before I got the RAS115. The units without dust collection ports make a big mess very fast. I was looking for an aggressive sander with good dust collection. The RAS is comfortable to ho...

Good Sander, but not Great

Good Sander, but not Great

I received this Milwaukee 1/4-sheet sander this week as a prize for completing surveys online – it was the only woodworking type tool offered. This replaces a B&D 1/4-sheet Palm Sander without oscillation. First impression is that it is packed well in a bright red plastic case with latches. Kit contains the sander, dust bag, three sheets of sandpaper (120, 180, 220), manual, and a paper punch. I had read reviews of this sander on Amazon and many users had complained that it is...

Freud Random Orbit Sanding Disks Go the Distance

Freud Random Orbit Sanding Disks Go the Distance

Home Depot switched from Norton 3X to Freud abrasive products. I have tried the 120 grit and 150 grit 5” hook and loop disks, and they work very well. The ceramic blend of abrasives keeps cutting upwards of an hour of continuous sanding. I change them out of habbit, but they look like new and are still making sawdust. I didn’t have any disks come loose from either my Bosch or Dewalt sanders. The disks do not load up with dust like some brands. Cost is cheap – a 50 coun...

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

Rockler's remarkable red rubber sanding block

03-13-2012 06:37 AM by DHS | 6 comments »

I purchased a sanding block for the first time yesterday. I had taken my mother to lunch on Sunday afternoon and then to reward myself for this good deed I visited the local Rockler Woodworking store and browsed the discount racks. I bought some sanding disks, a quart of Titebond III, some space balls, and then just for the heck of it, I purchased a rubber sanding block for $3.99. What a wonderful device. I don’t know why I’ve never used one before. Perhaps it was my abrasive high-school...
