Big bang for little buck

Big bang for little buck

Just to start, my oldest daughter Karen was cleaning polish off of her nails at the dining room table when she accidentally tipped over the bottle of nail polish remover. It proceeded to run across the table top and eat through the finish… I decided to strip down the top of the table and refinish it, but I knew that my random orbital sander was on it’s last leg so in a way… this gave me good justification for a new shop tool! Now for the review… I was originally...

Great Tool for some tasks

Great Tool for some tasks

I have been using my Flatmaster drum sander (http://stockroomsupply.ca/shop/drum-sanders/18-flatmaster.html) for 2 years now and thought that I had something yet to add to the previous reviews for this product. Set-up:I purchased my Flatmaster complete with the metal top sans the motor; married it with a NIB – OS Dayton motor. Assembly and motor installation / setup was straight forward and easy enough. That said I had interference between the belt and my housing, the opening in the h...

Ya Hoo Time to sand

Ya Hoo Time to sand

How can one real good tool be so much better than the next best. Festools 150/3 is such a tool. I was told that sanding is something that you do to every project you make, so it makes perfect sense to spend some money here and get the best you can. We are not talking about the difference between Rigid & Royobi, which are throw away tools, Festool has thrown out the cost factor and made a tool that does it’s job with astounding results.

Industraial Abrasives. Where Customer Service is Fantastic

Industraial Abrasives. Where Customer Service is Fantastic

How is this for customer service? I needed some new wraps for my drum sander and I remember a buddy of mine recommended Industrial Abrasives. I went to their site and checked them out. Their prices were certainly very good but it was their customer service that really bounced them to the top of the pack, at least for me. They sell 3” aluminum oxide poly/cotton backed paper in 35’ rolls and 52 yard rolls. It would take me several years to go through 52 yards so I opted for t...

Bosch Variable Speed Orbital

Bosch Variable Speed Orbital

To start off this is a great little orbital. I have used others in the past and have found this one to be the best, or the one that I like the most as of lately. I was at one point a really big supporter of the variable speed porter cable orbital, I was able to use them on a daily basis. At the shop we used to really beat the hell out of those sanders, but they never seemed to quite. I mean some of them did but most of the time they just kept on chugging. Only problem with the PC though is th...

Best sander I have ever used

Best sander I have ever used

This is truly a 5 star sander (unfortunately with a 5 star price to boot). I’ve always been an ROS guy but never able to get a mirror smooth finish without some hand touch-up in certain areas. This sander delivers! The Good Overall Construction This sander is well built. It’s heavy, yet ergonomically pleasing. The front handle comes off if need be. It is solid, quiet, and vibration free. It comes with a dust port fitting, or a dust collection tube with a filter inside (that ...

Just the ticket for those difficult sanding tasks

Just the ticket for those difficult sanding tasks

Saturday morning I was lying in bed and on the TV was the lovely Jodi Marks touting the MultiMaster. Now, it’s difficult not to do what Jody says, she being all wonderful and woodworky. And my wife had already decided that we (I) were (was) going to refinish the kitchen table (as opposed to the dining room table). You can see it in the photo. This top is veneered out of some unidentified wood that looks like a cross between birch, maple and European Beech. But the edging was shaped w...

I haven’t seen any LJ reviews of the RAS. I don’t have a lot of experience with it yet but I’ll share my initial thoughts and update the review later. I bought this sander to hog out rocking chair seats, legs … I used standard 4.5” grinders with abrasive disks or donuts before I got the RAS115. The units without dust collection ports make a big mess very fast. I was looking for an aggressive sander with good dust collection. The RAS is comfortable to ho...

This has been quite an upgrade from my previous methods of sanding – hand belt sanding (never comes out at quite 90 degrees), or drum sanders on the drill press (I can never find sanding drums taller than 1-2 inches. The sander is marketed to homeowners, and small businesses and it really fills a niche. It won’t replace a random orbit sander, but it is a great compliment to any shop. I selected the Ridgid sander based on my positive experience with their tools in the past (drill p...

Not For Everyone But A Great Tool

Not For Everyone But A Great Tool

My buddy VonHagan recommended this sander to me some time ago and I just recently purchased it. My experience with it has been wonderful: no vibration to speak of, sands REALLY fast, and leaves a perfect surface. I bought the Spirit model as it is lighter and cheaper than the Supreme model. I chose the 3/16” orbit (3/32 and 3/8) are also available. I also got the model that connects to vac. Using my dust collector and Abranet discs, sanding is as dust free as it gets. The down side for ...
