MLCS Laser gouded router plate #9098

MLCS Laser gouded router plate #9098

Received this today, and mounted it up to a PC 690 D handle router. It’s kind of one of my “go to” routers in the shop. It was thicker than I expected, with a larger hole to be able to use larger bits than the Rockler clear insert that I had been using on this router, so it will not be able to use standard PC insert guides, and that”s ok with me as I have other plates to use. The laser was “dead nuts” on using a 45 V grove bit, But the feature I like the...

Great new router bit for your collection

Great new router bit for your collection

03-01-2012 02:46 AM by T. D. Reid | 18 comments »

This is a great bit that I am using to make Arts and Craft style legs with so that they show quarter sawn white oak on all four sides. The instructions also say that you can use it to build boxes or make drawers but I have not attempted these procedures. The bit comes in two sizes one for use on stock 1/2 -3/4 of an inch and the one I purchased for use on 3/8 – 1/2 inch stock. Now during the set up I did not realize that the bit that I had purchased was meant for use on the thinner stoc...

40 Piece Tool Shop Router Bit Set

40 Piece Tool Shop Router Bit Set

02-14-2012 04:50 AM by Raymond | 12 comments »

For Christmas my mom got me a 40 piece Tool Shop router bit set. I know what your thinking you get what you pay for. And for the most part that is true. This was an exception. 40 piece carbide tip ¼ shank router bits in every shape and size. Ball bearings on the top and bottom of some bits all run smooth. I tested all the bits and all are sharp and true out of the box no wobble or any defects that I can detect. They came in a nice wooden case with easy access to the bits. This was on sale fo...

Freud insert router bits

Freud insert router bits

This is a review of Freud insert router bits but also a review of these bits in general as there seems to be some re-branding of the tools going on. I have bits from Freud, Amana, CMT and Dimar, some with identical bodies. Regardless of manufacture, having one of these bits would be an important addition to any shop. You can achieve perfect glass smooth surfaces on any wood, even going completely against the grain. Fluffy, curly snowflakes of shavings will hang in the air while you work an...

Leigh R9 Plus Dovetail Jig initial impressions

Leigh R9 Plus Dovetail Jig initial impressions

01-23-2012 07:50 AM by Jake Willet | 5 comments »

New on the market from Leigh is a consumer friendly dovetail jig. Assembly takes an hour. The instructions tell you to use 5/8” mdf. I had a hell of a time finding this and ended up stealing it from the top of a rolling tool cabinet at work. The beam assembly was pretty straightforward. 8/4 beam and 5/8” mdf. The way you have to use this necessitates using 5/8” material as a backer board. I cut 12 backer boards. I used 1 for an initial test. The jig worked great and...

RT1000XL Router Table - Excellent Product

RT1000XL Router Table - Excellent Product

01-02-2012 10:29 AM by David Grimes | 15 comments »

I’ve had this table for almost a year, so for those of you yearning for a review where the tags aren’t still hanging, this is one of them. As you can see from my photos, I have added an MCLS Daisy Pin Router to it. The table does not come with the pin router. The only modifications I have made are adding 7” to the base to suit my height preference. I knew I was going to do this when ordered, so I told the builder to attach the wheels knowing that I would transfer them ...

A good ready-made router table

A good ready-made router table

This is pretty much the review I added to Lowes, which is where I bought this table: This table gets it right. The router mounting plate has many configurations for a variety of router brands and it features a large enough opening for biggest raised panel bits. The split fence is very nice as well with a t-track located above the split MDF auxiliary fences. The fence has a somewhat flimsy vacuum port and the back of the table also has a separate orifice for a dust collection hose to attach...

Great Starter Routing Table

Great Starter Routing Table

12-22-2011 12:09 AM by brtech | 6 comments »

If you need a decent quality routing table, a build it yourself option just isn’t right now, this is your choice. I’ve looked around, and this is the best value. Easy transaction and fast delivery from Griz. Picked up a coupon that helped some. It’s a heavy box, well packed. Typical Griz manual, with one exception, see below. Basically, you assemble rails to the bottom of the table top, assemble the legs to those rails and add the braces to the middle of the leg...

Great setup with repeatable results

Great setup with repeatable results

I have had the Mast-R-Lift II complete table system for about 6 or 7 monthes, and feel like it is time to do a review on it after using it extensivly. The package I got came with the stand, the table top, the fence, the mast-R-lift II router lift, power tek switch, reducing rings, and 4 parrallegram feather boards. To set up this whole system and get everything aligned took about 4 hours. The stand is very sturdy and made of thicker material than the run of the mill open angle iron stand. ...

Router table fence needs work to reach full potential

Router table fence needs work to reach full potential

I have had the Woodpecker's Super Fence router table fence for a few years now. I got it as part of a router table/lift/fence/legs package, but I’m not going to review those other items here. My overall assessment is that the fence works very well, but only after what was for me a significant amount of tuning. For the price I thought it should have worked nearly flawlessly out of the box, so I’m only giving it two stars. As you can see from the picture, this is a split fen...
