Leigh R9 Plus Dovetail Jig initial impressions

Leigh R9 Plus Dovetail Jig initial impressions

01-23-2012 07:50 AM by Jake Willet | 5 comments »

New on the market from Leigh is a consumer friendly dovetail jig. Assembly takes an hour. The instructions tell you to use 5/8” mdf. I had a hell of a time finding this and ended up stealing it from the top of a rolling tool cabinet at work. The beam assembly was pretty straightforward. 8/4 beam and 5/8” mdf. The way you have to use this necessitates using 5/8” material as a backer board. I cut 12 backer boards. I used 1 for an initial test. The jig worked great and...

RT1000XL Router Table - Excellent Product

RT1000XL Router Table - Excellent Product

I’ve had this table for almost a year, so for those of you yearning for a review where the tags aren’t still hanging, this is one of them. As you can see from my photos, I have added an MCLS Daisy Pin Router to it. The table does not come with the pin router. The only modifications I have made are adding 7” to the base to suit my height preference. I knew I was going to do this when ordered, so I told the builder to attach the wheels knowing that I would transfer them ...

A good ready-made router table

A good ready-made router table

This is pretty much the review I added to Lowes, which is where I bought this table: This table gets it right. The router mounting plate has many configurations for a variety of router brands and it features a large enough opening for biggest raised panel bits. The split fence is very nice as well with a t-track located above the split MDF auxiliary fences. The fence has a somewhat flimsy vacuum port and the back of the table also has a separate orifice for a dust collection hose to attach...

Great Starter Routing Table

Great Starter Routing Table

If you need a decent quality routing table, a build it yourself option just isn’t right now, this is your choice. I’ve looked around, and this is the best value. Easy transaction and fast delivery from Griz. Picked up a coupon that helped some. It’s a heavy box, well packed. Typical Griz manual, with one exception, see below. Basically, you assemble rails to the bottom of the table top, assemble the legs to those rails and add the braces to the middle of the leg...

Great setup with repeatable results

Great setup with repeatable results

I have had the Mast-R-Lift II complete table system for about 6 or 7 monthes, and feel like it is time to do a review on it after using it extensivly. The package I got came with the stand, the table top, the fence, the mast-R-lift II router lift, power tek switch, reducing rings, and 4 parrallegram feather boards. To set up this whole system and get everything aligned took about 4 hours. The stand is very sturdy and made of thicker material than the run of the mill open angle iron stand. ...

Router table fence needs work to reach full potential

Router table fence needs work to reach full potential

I have had the Woodpecker's Super Fence router table fence for a few years now. I got it as part of a router table/lift/fence/legs package, but I’m not going to review those other items here. My overall assessment is that the fence works very well, but only after what was for me a significant amount of tuning. For the price I thought it should have worked nearly flawlessly out of the box, so I’m only giving it two stars. As you can see from the picture, this is a split fen...

This is a note to DynaBlue from the inventor: I read your review of the General Tools Mortise and Tenon Jig and wish to thank you for your expert review and analysis. If possible, I would like to be able to call DB and speak to him privately on some of the details, if you would please give me a way to call him.I am particularly interested because I am the inventor and patent holder of this tool, so I want you to know that your criticism is completely fair and accurate and, as the designer, bu...

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

Harbor Freight Router Inlay Kit

10-12-2011 08:11 PM by ChuckC | 9 comments »

I recently bought the Harbor Freight Inlay Kit. HF obviously doesn’t make it but there’s no other name on the package. I was looking at them from other stores and for $35 for the kit and even more for the templates I always passed it up. This one was $10 and I had a coupon that brought it down to $8. The HF one even adds a centering pin which was a nice touch and the bushing is solid brass. I still needed templates so I designed something quick in Sketchup and cut it out on the...

First Blush Impressions

Disclaimer: I’m not a professional reviewer and these opinions are mine and mine alone! Retail Price: $149.99 I first saw this jig in magazine adverts about two months ago and have had a couple people ask me about the jig, but I hadn’t actually seen one until last night. I was able to procure the jig, spent last night reading the directions and checking out the General Tools Website videos, and today I tested the jig over several hours with the following results. Th...

Rockler Fluting Jig. It works

Rockler Fluting Jig. It works

09-30-2011 02:08 AM by Craftsman on the lake | 5 comments »

Saddled with the idea of making fluted casings for a bedroom and eventually for the rest of the house, I decided to splurge and pick up Rockler’s fluting jig. I must say that after a little practice on some scrap to get used to it then finishing off a bedroom, it works nicely. The Jig is well made. It is constructed of phenol ply and has knobs to tighten and adjust that have metal inserts. To make a flute you set your router in it and adjust the jig so that two rails ride on both si...
