First Dovetails Ever. Easy as Pie with the Akeda BC24 Dovetail Jig

First Dovetails Ever. Easy as Pie with the Akeda BC24 Dovetail Jig

137 days ago by thiel | 17 comments »

First, Some BackgroundThere’s one thing I should clarify so you’ll put this jig in the proper perspective: I’ve never made a dovetail. Not by hand, not by machine. I’ve never even seen a dovetail jig used (except on New Yankee Workshop). To be perfectly honest, I didn’t (until this morning) know the difference between a pin and a tail. That being said, I have aspirations of building fine furniture of my own design some day. And with those aspirations in mind, I try to make each tool p...

A great accessory for your router

A great accessory for your router

Using either one of two wrenches for replace a router bit can be a real pain. Especially if it’s in a router table. This nifty little thing will allow you to replace your router with an allen wrench. This “Eliminator RC Quick Change Chuck” is a combination bit extension and one-tool chuck.Unlike other extensions, it replaces the nut and collet on your router thus minimizing run-out which can occur with some extensions. I hesitated getting one of these things for a l...

Amana tambour door router bit set - slick idea

Amana tambour door router bit set - slick idea

188 days ago by Brandon | 7 comments »

I have been wanting to build my wife a roll top desk for some time but the dilemma always came in on how to make the tambour. The new bit set from Amana is a great idea! No more having to glue slats to canvas or drilling the slats to run a cable down through them. The bits worked great and made it real easy to use different woods. The one drawback that I found was in the instructions and video. They state to mill the stock to 1/2” x 1 15/16” and that is what I did. The iss...

Mortise Pal Review: Highly Recommended

Mortise Pal Review: Highly Recommended

306 days ago by newTim | 6 comments »

January 23rd, 2009Review: Mortise Palhttp://www.mortisepal.com/ I highly recommend this jig. It is well machined and works exactly as shown; a rare achievement in woodworking, I know. I purchased the original MP a few months back and quickly discovered it would only fit 2 1/4” (?) maximum. Well they must have heard some feedback and they came out with Version 2.0 which will straddle 3” stock and has a couple of other improvements. Things I look for in tools include: Is it safe? Is i...

dovetail Jig

dovetail Jig

76 days ago by kkickback | 15 comments »

I just recently purchased a 12” porter cable dovetail jig. The worked very well . Cuts 1/2 blind dovetails perfact and also did some sliding dovetails as well that was a little more tricky to set up but one you do it once or twice should be no problem I really love the machine although the directions sometimes were un clear. I would rate the a 5 but with some what poor directions I’m going to say 4.5 it also was a bit higher than some other dove tail jigs but I wanted something th...

Precise Repeatability for Multiples

Precise Repeatability for Multiples

I am currently building a set of 6 Arts & Crafts chairs as designed by Kevin Rodel in FWW. I will be doing a project posting soon, but wanted to recommend a tool that really helped me on this job. In order to reduce individual fitting and trimming of all the joints, it is necessary to make mortises in the same place on each piece. With this jig, it’s easy to do. The tall back leg has 5 mortises, half of them angled. I was able to set up the jig, and place the mortises so the teno...

MLCS Horizontal Router Table

MLCS Horizontal Router Table

405 days ago by Toolz | 7 comments »

I was having trouble routing wide panels standing on edge on my router table. I made a jig to stand panels on edge for trimming solid edge moldings on plywood but was unhappy with the results. After reading reviews http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/review1.htm#Horizonal_Tab_anchor and watching the short video http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/horizontal_router_table.html I ordered the table and mounted a Craftsman Model 3...

Great Router Table You Can Grow Into!

Great Router Table You Can Grow Into!

One of the great attributes of this router table over many others, is the availablity of quality accessories at a reasonable cost. Rockler stocks a complete line of accessories for their table, including the Incra precision router fence. The Incra fence is one of the primary reasons I chose the Rockler table. It goes on easy and was designed fror this particular table top. This table top comes with an insert of 1/4” aluminum pre-drilled for many different routers. If your router ...

Butterfly Inlays Made Easy

Butterfly Inlays Made Easy

250 days ago by knotscott | 4 comments »

Even for a first timer, this inlay kit worked flawlessly as advertised. Using just basic router skills, it couldn’t be much simpler. Put the bit and the guide bushing in the router, trace the template to cut the receiving hole, add the spacer to trace out the inlay with the same template, cut the inlay piece free from the stock, and place it in the complimenting cutout hole. Some sanding may be required to make everything flush, and a practice run is always a good idea. The tip of the ...

Table works great though installation is finicky

Table works great though installation is finicky

422 days ago by JLYoung | 8 comments »

I ordered this router table insert plate on a Thursday afternoon and received it on Monday afternoon which I think is an excellent delivery time. The shipment arrived well packaged with everything in it. The instructions to install this thing are very detailed and laid out in a logical step by step manner, which though very complex and daunting upon first review, became quite logical once you take the time to follow the instruction procedure. It took me quite a bit of time to get this plat...
