The Rockler Locking Miter bit for 3/4” stock really impressed me. I took the time to joint and plane the stock to uniform thickness. I butted the two edges together (as if I was making a table top) to make sure the edges were straight. A few small test boards is all it took to get good fitting, tight joints. In fact I was surprised how snug the fit was. It creates a perfect friction fit, that will stay together – even before the glue is added. The interlocking parts seem to ...

Freud insert router bits

Freud insert router bits

This is a review of Freud insert router bits but also a review of these bits in general as there seems to be some re-branding of the tools going on. I have bits from Freud, Amana, CMT and Dimar, some with identical bodies. Regardless of manufacture, having one of these bits would be an important addition to any shop. You can achieve perfect glass smooth surfaces on any wood, even going completely against the grain. Fluffy, curly snowflakes of shavings will hang in the air while you work an...

Only $60 but that was $60 down the drain.

Only $60 but that was $60 down the drain.

It’s cheap (cheap as in poorly made and from bad materials). It took me an hour of adjusting and more adjusting to get an ALMOST decent half blind dovetail out of this piece of _! Clamping the pieces in place is time consuming and requires way too many turns to hold the wood securely in place (which also means way too many turns to release the piece after routing it). Also, the screws that hold the template in place is positioned in a way that will prevent clamping thinner pieces of ...

First Dovetails Ever. Easy as Pie with the Akeda BC24 Dovetail Jig

First Dovetails Ever. Easy as Pie with the Akeda BC24 Dovetail Jig

1839 days ago by thiel | 21 comments »

First, Some BackgroundThere’s one thing I should clarify so you’ll put this jig in the proper perspective: I’ve never made a dovetail. Not by hand, not by machine. I’ve never even seen a dovetail jig used (except on New Yankee Workshop). To be perfectly honest, I didn’t (until this morning) know the difference between a pin and a tail. That being said, I have aspirations of building fine furniture of my own design some day. And with those aspirations in mind, I try to make each tool p...

Not impressed

Not impressed

I purchased this bit because it had three cutters on each blade. It also promised to be a decent bit because of being adjustable. Well not quite what I thought. After 10 feet of tongue cutting one of the carbide tips snapped in half. My 5 year old was in the garage so fortunately it didn’t get him. Usually if carbide fails it detaches completely. This tooth literally cracked in half. In short go with another brand. It will be getting returned

Incra - A great router fence

Incra - A great router fence

I purchased this after seeing it at the Woodworkers show in Dallas this year. I didn’t get it at the show becausewoodpeckers had it cheaper and free shipping. (Saved $80) I have been looking at it for a while, but thought what’s the big deal, my fence works just fine. Then atthe show I saw some features that I liked. Now, like at all shows they have nice slick demos that they doto make their product look simple and easy. Well, for the most part it is simple and easy. The sys...

Frustration with MLCS Dovetail Jig Defects

Frustration with MLCS Dovetail Jig Defects

Don’t you love having to fix something, out of the box, that you bought, new.I bought a dovetail jig from MLCS.I open it up and start to assemble it and there are problems, right off the bat. You can see in the following pictures that half of the six bolts on it are bent. What you can’t see is that the template brackets were also bent and thejig body was out of square. (The jig body holds the stock together at 90degrees) Of course, they offered to replace it, but I wou...

Whiteside Router Bits and Woodworkersworld.net

I expect good customer service when I am trying to buy something from a company but this week I dealt with two companies that went above and beyond anything I could ask for.I was looking for a particular router bit and couldn’t find it locally and if they ordered it they told me to expect up to a two week wait. I found the bit I was looking for on Whiteside’s website but a notation in their catalog said it was not for the use I intended. I called Whiteside to find out why and was ...

Great new router bit for your collection

Great new router bit for your collection

This is a great bit that I am using to make Arts and Craft style legs with so that they show quarter sawn white oak on all four sides. The instructions also say that you can use it to build boxes or make drawers but I have not attempted these procedures. The bit comes in two sizes one for use on stock 1/2 -3/4 of an inch and the one I purchased for use on 3/8 – 1/2 inch stock. Now during the set up I did not realize that the bit that I had purchased was meant for use on the thinner stoc...

Another bad bosch router product

Another bad bosch router product

118 days ago by Vertigo | 16 comments »

What the heck. For a company that makes such a good router their accessories suck. I used this template guide for maybe 2 feet cutting out miter slots on my new outfeed table see here and the collet snapped off of the plate. It took a nice chunk out of my carbide upcut spiral bit. I will be contacting bosch to see if I can get some compensation. If they make good on it I will let you know. If I don’t update this assume they suck still.
