Drill Press Planer

Drill Press Planer

As much as I’de love an excuse to get another piece of equipment for the shop I don’t use a planer enough to justify the expense or space. I saw this Drill Press Planer at the Woodworker’s Supply and figured for the price I would give it a shot. I was able to plane my first pieces of wood this week. I was preparing a section of a 3×3x9 block of maple to create a laminated bowl blank. The Planer worked well for my purposes. I secured the planer in the chuck and adj...

As good as any in its class

As good as any in its class

So a few months ago, I decided I needed a thickness planer. Of course, having a tiny workspace meant I was limited to compact models. All my research indicated the higher end Dewalt and Ridgid planers gave the best results. That same research also indicated the lower end models were capable of reducing the thickness of a board, but snipe was basically inevitable unless you hyper-tweaked the tool and used an additional infeed/outfeed support table. I was dead-set on getting one of the better m...

First on the Block to Get the New Plane

First on the Block to Get the New Plane

After seeing the advertisement in the latest Woodcraft magazine offering the new Wood River planes I couldn’t wait to see them. The article said that they resemble the LN planes and were more affordable. After calling my local Woodcraft store I was told that it would be a while before they would have the planes in the store. Yesterday 2/17/09 I went to check them out and I believe that they are what was said in the ad.I have a no.5, no.2, no.1, and a low angle adjustable block by LN....

Note: I’ll keep updating this as things progress. And italic items to clarify my original pronouns to make sure it’s clear when I’m talking about Steel City or Highland, both who are helping me out with the issue as we speak. My original review (2 stars)I was excited to order this planer, and found it online at Highland Woodworking for $100 off. I got it last week, and am really disappointed in it. Although I’d say the fit and finish of it isn’t ideal (s...

DeWalt DW734 12 inch thickness planer

DeWalt DW734 12 inch thickness planer

I’ve had this planer for about 2 years now and have run lots of wood through it. From easy stuff like aspen to nastier stuff like ipe and purpleheart. My overall experience with the tool has been excellent. I don’t know how I got along before I got a planer. The DW734 is the lower end of DeWalt’s “lunchbox” planers. The fancier one being the DW735. This planer has three knives, of the disposable variety. They are “double sided”. When the k...

Delta 22-590 13" planer

Delta 22-590 13" planer

02-11-2011 10:21 PM by ic3ss | 10 comments »

It seems this is the first LJ review of the new Delta 22-590 planer. Delta released this last summer, I believe, and I’ve only found a few reviews by people who’ve actually used the thing. Most of them on the web are just copy-and-paste of someone elses’ review. I wanted to save some money and buy a used planer, and after wasting my time and a lot of gas on a Craigslist deal-gone-bad for a used 22-580, I decided to buy new. This is the 22-590, it’s the update to the 22...

DeWalt 13" two speed planer

DeWalt 13" two speed planer

Recently purchased the DeWalt model 735 13 inch two speed planer and stand. Right out of the box the planer had very few parts to assemble. The instructions were very easy to understand. I had to make a few minor adjustments in the height adjustment scale, but the preset stops were right on the money. Gave the planer a real test with some cedar boards that were up to 10 inches in width and the machine did great. I planed them down close to 3/4 inch thick and then switched to the slower ...

Now I really do have 10 Inches...

Last August I purchased a Jet 10” Combination Jointer/Planer, and last weekend I finally got to give it a real workout. I had 3 pieces of 6/4 Cherry all 10’ long ranging in width from about 5” up to nearly 9”. I needed to mill them all down to the exact same thickness so I could glue them up and make one massive cherry counter top 9’ 3” long and 17” deep. Me and my Jet got to spend 5 hours of quality time with each other. The good: 1 – T...

A little spendy for a portable, but an amazing planer.

It sure seems I went on a bit of a binge, but this is the 3rd and final tool purchase for the foreseeable future. It wasn’t one I had planned on like the sander, it was one of necessity. You see my previous planer was a Delta 12 ½” factory reconditioned unit that I picked up for a song. It did yeoman’s work for close to 10 years. It surfaced 1000s of feet of pine tent poles, 600 board feet of ash in one weekend and other such adventures. It bogged down occasionally and more often than I ...
