Grizzly G0453Z

I purchased the Grizzly G0453 15” planer with the spiral head cutter. It works like a dream! There is some snipe on the front of the board “at times” which is to be expected. I just make sure that the board is a little longer than what I need for the finished board. The snipe isn’t that deep. Most of the time it takes only a little sanding and it disappears. It was packed very well for shipping. It was actually in a wood crate. After I unpacked it, I used one roll of paper towels and sever...

New Planner

New Planner

I just got a new Grizzley GO453PX planner with spiral cuter head. It arrived by Freight at the dock where I work. Loaded it on my Pick-Up after work. It weights in at 700LBs. Getting it in the shop was a little tricky as the loader I used had a bucket wider than by 6’ double doors I have going into the shop. We finaly got it in and it took about 2 hours to get it all assembled and another 2 hours cleaning of all the protective grease off machine [Alcocol and elbow grease worked good]...

There is nothing negative to say about this machine in the way of performance. I am lucky (see my posts about the best thing i have-wife) to have a wife who supports my hobby for the sake of my sanity! The machine is absolutely perfect and the helical head reduces the noise to about 1/3 of the Ridgid lunchbox I had-the R4330 3 blade, which was great as a starter. You dont, but should, even need hearing protection when running it. I can even still hear the radio when its planing. Most important...

Great Craigslist find, better options at retail price

Great Craigslist find, better options at retail price

Note this 4 star rating is not for a brand new 21758. With that said, this is actually a decent planer. I’ve been doing a lot of research lately and came across this one on craigslist. Actually I came across a Ridgid R4331 that I went to look at. The gentleman was extremely knowledgeable and had a very impressive and immaculate shop. He had the craftsman for sale as well and was only asking 100.00 with a brand new set of knives installed, and a set in the package still. He was kind enou...

Grizzly T10128 15-in. Spiral Cutterhead on ShopFox 1723 Planer

Grizzly T10128 15-in. Spiral Cutterhead on ShopFox 1723 Planer

It was time to purchase new blades for ShopFox 1723 15-in. planer. I started thinking about the price of sharping the blades and the price of a spare set of blades and then wanted to see what sort of price I could get on a spiral cutterhead. I’ll be honest with you, I’ve wanted one for a while now. I loved the idea that you didn’t have to replace the entire blade, only the cutters that needed it, and you didn’t have to do that until you had turned each three times, ...

This is a great planer, out of the box the unit performed very well very smooth surface and virtually no snipe. I adjusted the in feed and out feed tables now there is no snipe at all. The only slightly annoying thing is the out feed table will not fold up all the way with the dust collection port installed but I can live with that (I’m not even knocking any stars off). I was thinking about getting the Dewalt 735x but I wanted a segmented cutting head, and upgrading the Dewalt later was way o...

Shelix cutterhead for DW735

Shelix cutterhead for DW735

I bought a DW735 planer about a year and a half ago. The knives were starting to get some nicks in them and time rotate then. I decided after talking with somebody at the local woodworking club that had changed to a Shelix cutterhead to do the same. I ordered the cutterhead direct from Byrd. Price was only about $10 more than Amazon and freight was less. so price worked out about the same. The cutterhead was well packed came with four extra cutters , the tool to change the cutters and...

I have really worked this tool for many hours lately and am totally impressed with its performance. It is pricy but has received a number of best product recognitions in magazine articles in their plainer reviews. It’s easy to adjust and feed wood through. You must use a vacuum system with it! It’s 13” wide capacity should cover most boards you want to plain down.It has a three knife cutter-head which helps extend the life of the knife. The blades are easy to change and t...

Heavy, Heavy Duty, and a Very Good Performer

Heavy, Heavy Duty, and a Very Good Performer

After getting a Jointer, I realized very quickly that I should have gotten a planer FIRST. I was able to flatten a board, and joint an edge, but that is something that I can do fairly easily with hand planes. thicknessing that board on the other hand is sometimes a bit more challenging to do by hand – especially when you have multiple boards to mill. Price I have limited funds, and so visit craigslist often for tools. I was actually not expecting to find the Dewalt 735 in my budge...
