Byrd shelix cutterhead

Byrd shelix cutterhead

I installed a Byrd Shelix cutter head in my new Grizzly 15 inch thickness planer with the thought that it would leave “A glassy smooth cut” and reduce tear out in highly figured wood. This head comes with 75 carbide cutters installed and looks impressive. The cutters are spiraled around the head the same as other company’s do but they go one step further and place them at an angle so that they slice at the wood. I put some nasty birch through it for a test and hade very minor tear out but...

G0453Z Review

G0453Z Review

It has taken me a few weeks but I have finally got my new planer and jointer all adjusted and running. I ran about 30 bf a cherry through them for a project I am working on. This is the first Grizzly purchase that I have made and I will definitely look at Grizzly when I go to upgrade my 9” crapsman band saw that I got for $35 on Craig’s list. The fit and finish we about what I expected. I took about 5 minutes to file the sharp edges and scrape a few drops of paint off the jointer fenc...

Grizzly G0453Z

Grizzly G0453Z

I purchased the Grizzly G0453 15” planer with the spiral head cutter. It works like a dream! There is some snipe on the front of the board “at times” which is to be expected. I just make sure that the board is a little longer than what I need for the finished board. The snipe isn’t that deep. Most of the time it takes only a little sanding and it disappears. It was packed very well for shipping. It was actually in a wood crate. After I unpacked it, I used one roll of paper towels and sever...

New Planner

New Planner

I just got a new Grizzley GO453PX planner with spiral cuter head. It arrived by Freight at the dock where I work. Loaded it on my Pick-Up after work. It weights in at 700LBs. Getting it in the shop was a little tricky as the loader I used had a bucket wider than by 6’ double doors I have going into the shop. We finaly got it in and it took about 2 hours to get it all assembled and another 2 hours cleaning of all the protective grease off machine [Alcocol and elbow grease worked good]...

Powermatic 209HH

Powermatic 209HH

There is nothing negative to say about this machine in the way of performance. I am lucky (see my posts about the best thing i have-wife) to have a wife who supports my hobby for the sake of my sanity! The machine is absolutely perfect and the helical head reduces the noise to about 1/3 of the Ridgid lunchbox I had-the R4330 3 blade, which was great as a starter. You dont, but should, even need hearing protection when running it. I can even still hear the radio when its planing. Most important...

Great Craigslist find, better options at retail price

Great Craigslist find, better options at retail price

Note this 4 star rating is not for a brand new 21758. With that said, this is actually a decent planer. I’ve been doing a lot of research lately and came across this one on craigslist. Actually I came across a Ridgid R4331 that I went to look at. The gentleman was extremely knowledgeable and had a very impressive and immaculate shop. He had the craftsman for sale as well and was only asking 100.00 with a brand new set of knives installed, and a set in the package still. He was kind enou...

Laguna 16" Planer delivers

Laguna 16" Planer delivers

12-26-2012 10:38 PM by Deeppocket | 17 comments »

I purchased a Laguna 16” Planer last month and have a mostly positive review of the machine and the Company. As a disclaimer, I am retired, and enjoy woodworking as a hobby. My Planer experience is limited to my 13” DeWalt lunchbox Planer and now this industrial machine. I did not work in the industry. As a second disclaimer, Laguna did send me a T-Shirt after my purchase. Laguna’s 16” Planer is very similar to the Powermatic 15HH 15’ Planer, and probably cam...

Grizzly T10128 15-in. Spiral Cutterhead on ShopFox 1723 Planer

Grizzly T10128 15-in. Spiral Cutterhead on ShopFox 1723 Planer

It was time to purchase new blades for ShopFox 1723 15-in. planer. I started thinking about the price of sharping the blades and the price of a spare set of blades and then wanted to see what sort of price I could get on a spiral cutterhead. I’ll be honest with you, I’ve wanted one for a while now. I loved the idea that you didn’t have to replace the entire blade, only the cutters that needed it, and you didn’t have to do that until you had turned each three times, ...

Planer has been a horse - till I went to rotate the carbide cutters.

UPDATE: When I bought this planer 18 months ago, for some reason I also bought a pack of ten cutters. When I received the planer, I found a very small black piece of cardboard with a little blister pack stapled to it, with a couple of extra cutters. Completely forgot about it and put it with the odd wrenches we all have to collect. In this case, in a clear container with my router table wrenches, planer wrenches, and jointer wrenches, since the tools all sit pretty close to each other in my...
