Drill Press Planer

Drill Press Planer

475 days ago by dmann | 10 comments »

As much as I’de love an excuse to get another piece of equipment for the shop I don’t use a planer enough to justify the expense or space. I saw this Drill Press Planer at the Woodworker’s Supply and figured for the price I would give it a shot. I was able to plane my first pieces of wood this week. I was preparing a section of a 3×3x9 block of maple to create a laminated bowl blank. The Planer worked well for my purposes. I secured the planer in the chuck and adj...

My first planer... cheap, easy to use, and portable

My first planer... cheap, easy to use, and portable

Well, for anyone who expects an in-depth review that has it’s foundation in a thorough understanding of wood planers, you’re going to be disappointed. This is my first planer and I’ve only actually been near an operating one once before, so all you’re going to get is a novice’s impression of a machine that’s probably meant for a novice. Maybe that makes me the perfect guy for the job, after all. This model sells locally for $239.00 and (of course) lis...

Byrd shelix cutterhead

Byrd shelix cutterhead

142 days ago by eastside | 13 comments »

I installed a Byrd Shelix cutter head in my new Grizzly 15 inch thickness planer with the thought that it would leave “A glassy smooth cut” and reduce tear out in highly figured wood. This head comes with 75 carbide cutters installed and looks impressive. The cutters are spiraled around the head the same as other company’s do but they go one step further and place them at an angle so that they slice at the wood. I put some nasty birch through it for a test and hade very minor tear out but...

Grizzly G0453 15" Planer

Grizzly G0453 15" Planer

176 days ago by Don K. | 40 comments »

Well As I recently stated….I did some serious upgrades in the old shop in the last few weeks, bought a new cabinet saw, new band saw, new jointer and a new planer. This first review will be over the new G0453 15” planer. (actually my second review…the jointer was a few weeks ago) I did some serious thinking about which planer to buy….but decided to go with a new Grizzly since I have had such good luck with my Grizzly jointer. While I really wished I could have went ...

First on the Block to Get the New Plane

First on the Block to Get the New Plane

After seeing the advertisement in the latest Woodcraft magazine offering the new Wood River planes I couldn’t wait to see them. The article said that they resemble the LN planes and were more affordable. After calling my local Woodcraft store I was told that it would be a while before they would have the planes in the store. Yesterday 2/17/09 I went to check them out and I believe that they are what was said in the ad.I have a no.5, no.2, no.1, and a low angle adjustable block by LN....

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

I have had the opportunity to use about 4 different planers. I owned a Ryobi 12.5” for about a year and returned it because rollers wouldn’t work, They bought a Ridgid and it lasted about 3 months, same problem (Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee are same corp) Finally I bucked up and bought Dewalt after seeing this at the wood show. However I am not the average weekend woodworker being a shop teacher so minimum duty tools just dont’ cut it for me. I also had a Delta 12.5”...

DeWalt 13" two speed planer

DeWalt 13" two speed planer

Recently purchased the DeWalt model 735 13 inch two speed planer and stand. Right out of the box the planer had very few parts to assemble. The instructions were very easy to understand. I had to make a few minor adjustments in the height adjustment scale, but the preset stops were right on the money. Gave the planer a real test with some cedar boards that were up to 10 inches in width and the machine did great. I planed them down close to 3/4 inch thick and then switched to the slower ...

Well built, reliable, great performing machine

Well built, reliable, great performing machine

637 days ago by JLYoung | 10 comments »

I bought this planer about a year and a half ago and it has served me very well. The cutter head lock has pretty much eliminated snipe. The only time I get it is if I try and feed a wide board though without first jointing one face. (I know this is not the proper way, but if a board is short and wide, won’t fit on my jointer and I’m taking off 1/4” I figure I can flatten it quite well by continuously flipping it around). The blades on this planer apparently aren’t ...

Delta 22-580 13-Inch Benchtop Planer

Delta 22-580 13-Inch Benchtop Planer

I have had this planer for going on 2 years now. I have nothing but praise for it.I got it used but like new condition. It has 2 sppeds. A dimensioning speed of 60 cpi allows you to shave rough wood to its desired thicknessquickly with no snipe. Then a quicker finishing speed of 90 cpi, your wood comes out ultrasmooth and ready to go. The double-sided M2 steel knives are powered by a 15 amp, 120-volt, single-phase motor. It has a blade zero indicator (which lets you set the cutterhead t...

13" bench top planer (Reconditioned)

13" bench top planer (Reconditioned)

27 days ago by Fireguy | 20 comments »

I purchased the rigid planer yesterday and got it home and unpacked it right away since it is reconditioned. Everything was with it and as far as I could tell never used or why it is reconditioned. Today I want thru the setup and tuned the in feed and out feed tables to level with the table. The thickness scale and repeat a cut where right on so I left them alone. Pro’s1: Great reviews2: Price $189.00, I also had a coupon for 10% off so ended up 169.00 + tax. Hard to beat that price.3:...
