A helical head for under $300?

A helical head for under $300?

I’ve seen a couple people post about the Accu-Head cutter heads but I’ve yet to actually see a true review of it… Back Story: A few months ago I was getting rather frustrated with my Ryobi planer and without the funds to buy a new $500 Steel City planer (the least expensive helical planer that I know of) I decided to pull the trigger on this upgrade. The Accu-Head.com website isn’t exactly faith inspiring but knowing they make the heads for the Steel City I figured ...

Drill Press Planer

Drill Press Planer

As much as I’de love an excuse to get another piece of equipment for the shop I don’t use a planer enough to justify the expense or space. I saw this Drill Press Planer at the Woodworker’s Supply and figured for the price I would give it a shot. I was able to plane my first pieces of wood this week. I was preparing a section of a 3×3x9 block of maple to create a laminated bowl blank. The Planer worked well for my purposes. I secured the planer in the chuck and adj...

Out of the box, I'm thrilled

Out of the box, I'm thrilled

When I began pondering the purchase of a thickness planer, I researched Fine Woodworking and saw that the DEwalt 735 was rated the best. My plans were to purchase this model when I decided it was time. As many of you likely read, I was drawn in by the helical head Steel City, and had some issues with it out of the box. As I said in that review, maybe I got a one-off lemon, but nonetheless, I wasn’t that impressed. Fortunately Chris from Highland Woodworking, where I ordered the ...

Byrd Shelix Cutter Head for Dewalt DW735

Byrd Shelix Cutter Head for Dewalt DW735

Installation: I purchased this unit about 2 weeks ago, and due to all the crazy weather back east it just finally arrived today (no reflection on the vendor). I was like a kid in a candy store, brought it inside and began taking my Dewalt apart for installation. Byrd provides pretty detailed instructions on getting the head in the planer. There could have been a slightly more detail in the instructions but if you have basic mechanical skills it will take an hour or so to accomplish the ...

Accuhead makes a Model M1304902A to fit the Dewalt DW 735. My neighbor and I put one in his machine and since we had never tried it before it took us a little over an hour. If you take your time it’s really not that difficult but a good memory helps. He loves it and it runs quieter and leaves a great finish in mahagony, maple and oak and he’s able to take heavier cuts without slowing the planer down by putting it under a heavy load it can’t handle. They had some test that ...

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

I have had the opportunity to use about 4 different planers. I owned a Ryobi 12.5” for about a year and returned it because rollers wouldn’t work, They bought a Ridgid and it lasted about 3 months, same problem (Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee are same corp) Finally I bucked up and bought Dewalt after seeing this at the wood show. However I am not the average weekend woodworker being a shop teacher so minimum duty tools just dont’ cut it for me. I also had a Delta 12.5”...

Planer..the only one I will ever own

Planer..the only one I will ever own

This planer is awesome. It is pricey, but I personally feel you get good value for it. I have seen it for $599 – $699. I paid $599. So shop around. This sucker is a beast. I mean heavy. For my shop it sits on a rolling cart that is much larger than the planer. I saw recently a guy who built a portable stand for his and it was no much wider than the planer itself. I cringed at the thought of it catching on a wood chip and falling over. I assure you once it starts falling there is n...

I have had this planer for going on 2 years now. I have nothing but praise for it.I got it used but like new condition. It has 2 sppeds. A dimensioning speed of 60 cpi allows you to shave rough wood to its desired thicknessquickly with no snipe. Then a quicker finishing speed of 90 cpi, your wood comes out ultrasmooth and ready to go. The double-sided M2 steel knives are powered by a 15 amp, 120-volt, single-phase motor. It has a blade zero indicator (which lets you set the cutterhead t...

I purchased the Dewalt 734 today from Lowes for $399.00. I have been looking at both the Ridgid 13” and this Dewalt. I have it fiqured out that these are pretty much equal products. Why did I choose Dewalt ? Simply because I was worried about the ability to find replacement knives for the Ridgid. I also like the manual lock on the Dewalt and I am also a little po’d with Home Depot because they would not honor their on- line price in the store which was 369.00 vs. 399.00. (Wi...

DeWalt DW734 12 inch thickness planer

DeWalt DW734 12 inch thickness planer

I’ve had this planer for about 2 years now and have run lots of wood through it. From easy stuff like aspen to nastier stuff like ipe and purpleheart. My overall experience with the tool has been excellent. I don’t know how I got along before I got a planer. The DW734 is the lower end of DeWalt’s “lunchbox” planers. The fancier one being the DW735. This planer has three knives, of the disposable variety. They are “double sided”. When the k...
