13" bench top planer (Reconditioned)
4 days ago by Fireguy | 17 comments »
I purchased the rigid planer yesterday and got it home and unpacked it right away since it is reconditioned. Everything was with it and as far as I could tell never used or why it is reconditioned. Today I want thru the setup and tuned the in feed and out feed tables to level with the table. The thickness scale and repeat a cut where right on so I left them alone. Pro’s1: Great reviews2: Price $189.00, I also had a coupon for 10% off so ended up 169.00 + tax. Hard to beat that price.3:...
Heavy, Heavy Duty, and a Very Good Performer

After getting a Jointer, I realized very quickly that I should have gotten a planer FIRST. I was able to flatten a board, and joint an edge, but that is something that I can do fairly easily with hand planes. thicknessing that board on the other hand is sometimes a bit more challenging to do by hand – especially when you have multiple boards to mill. Price I have limited funds, and so visit craigslist often for tools. I was actually not expecting to find the Dewalt 735 in my budge...
Byrd shelix cutterhead
119 days ago by eastside | 13 comments »
I installed a Byrd Shelix cutter head in my new Grizzly 15 inch thickness planer with the thought that it would leave “A glassy smooth cut” and reduce tear out in highly figured wood. This head comes with 75 carbide cutters installed and looks impressive. The cutters are spiraled around the head the same as other company’s do but they go one step further and place them at an angle so that they slice at the wood. I put some nasty birch through it for a test and hade very minor tear out but...
A little spendy for a portable, but an amazing planer.

It sure seems I went on a bit of a binge, but this is the 3rd and final tool purchase for the foreseeable future. It wasn’t one I had planned on like the sander, it was one of necessity. You see my previous planer was a Delta 12 ½” factory reconditioned unit that I picked up for a song. It did yeoman’s work for close to 10 years. It surfaced 1000s of feet of pine tent poles, 600 board feet of ash in one weekend and other such adventures. It bogged down occasionally and more often than I ...
Grizzly G0453 15" Planer
153 days ago by Don K. | 36 comments »
Well As I recently stated….I did some serious upgrades in the old shop in the last few weeks, bought a new cabinet saw, new band saw, new jointer and a new planer. This first review will be over the new G0453 15” planer. (actually my second review…the jointer was a few weeks ago) I did some serious thinking about which planer to buy….but decided to go with a new Grizzly since I have had such good luck with my Grizzly jointer. While I really wished I could have went ...
Ridgid 13" Planer
250 days ago by Alan | 19 comments »
I bought this planer for my small basement workshop. It was fairly cheap, $299 Canadian on sale. It takes off alot of wood fast and is very easily adjusted. The only problem is snipe, even when I feel the boards are supported. The other observation is that after using it for a little while it creates alot of static electricity, shaving stick to it. Anyway I make sure my boards are longer then required then cut off the snipe. If I was to purchase another one I might spend more and get a ...
First on the Block to Get the New Plane

After seeing the advertisement in the latest Woodcraft magazine offering the new Wood River planes I couldn’t wait to see them. The article said that they resemble the LN planes and were more affordable. After calling my local Woodcraft store I was told that it would be a while before they would have the planes in the store. Yesterday 2/17/09 I went to check them out and I believe that they are what was said in the ad.I have a no.5, no.2, no.1, and a low angle adjustable block by LN....
12-1/2" benctop planer

For the same reasons I wanted a benchtop jointer, I wanted a benchtop planer. There are a few reviews of the 13” model around and looking at their manals on line, the 12-1/2 is quite similar and somewhat cheaper. The unit came well packed with two pieces of form fit styrofoam and a nice heavy poly bag to protect the planer. Also in the box was a chip collection shroud with a 4” port in addition to the stock deflector. As near as I could tell, the collection shroud is a ̶...

This planer/Molder/Sander/Gang saw machine was pricey ($2,350 or@ $90.00 per month) It came with a ‘pro pack’ which included:18-1/8 inch unit 5 hp motor.(220 single phase for blades/110 pinch rollers) Acc. shaft for mounting gang saws/molding knives(drum sander and planer shafts only require end sets)Knife holderDust chuteBed board(slick material which allows very smooth working of the material)Drum sanding kit(drum and 2 different grits of paper/with velcro backing)2 (700) Saw...
great little workhorse for the money

I got this planer a few months ago and since i got it i have been giving it a lot of work. i have probably run close to 200 bf through this planer and i am still on my first set of knives. which is good considering some of the woods i’ve put through it including hickory which is a demon to any blade. its is a nice little powerhouse though. it works wonderfully and has the power to take the full 1/16” off of any board with ease. it is very heavy duty too. i have stood on it before ...
