Several months ago I posted a negative review on the Shelix replacement head for my Dewalt 735. The problem was that the replacement heads are normally slightly smaller in diameter which makes it possible to install a Shelix with all the cutters in place through the main bearing seat on the drive end. However, I found the reduced diameter to be a problem as now I had snipe and a reduced cutting range and increased roller pressure. After a couple of phone calls and emails to Byrd Tool, th...

When I was looking for a thickness planer I found out that excluding a few companies (like Dewalt and Makita) most other tool manufacturers have their thickness planers built for them by one and the same Far East factory ( Shinmax: http://www.shinmax-qd.com/en/ ) that has been in planer building business seemingly forever. I have nothing against Chinese, or Taiwanese, or Korean goods if they are properly designed and executed and the fact that a manufacturer acquired good experience over yea...

From a Pinto to a Ferrari

From a Pinto to a Ferrari

When you go from the planer like in the third picture to a newer model, there is going to be an obvious world of difference. After fifteen years of using my H&W planer which is to say been very good to me even with some of the finagaling i had to do some days to get her to run right. I decided finally it was time to purchase a new Planer, so for six months of researching all the different planers I finally opted for this Dewalt, Now i have only used it a few times to more or less test it ...

Grizzly Customer Service Review

Grizzly Customer Service Review

I wanted to post a quick review of my recent interactions with Grizzly customer service, not specifically a review on the G0505 12-1/2” Planer because I have not had a chance to use it yet but I thought this information may be helpful to anyone interested. I am giving Grizzly customer service 5 stars. My wife actually ordered me the G0505 planer as a Christmas gift almost two months ago and has been keeping it in hiding since then. Because she could not move it herself I got to see my g...

Solidly performing planer

......I’m too lazy to get up and take a picture just for this so I found one in which the described planer is in the background…...... After reading the reviews for the Steel City Planer I thought I’d ad my two cents, as this is a piece of equipment I’ve never once regretted buying.I’ve had the planer 2 years, have used it extensively on many different kinds of woods, and it performs very reliably. Bought it for the supposed decreased sound output as compared ...

Shelix Replacement Head Too Small in Diameter

Shelix Replacement Head Too Small in Diameter

12-12-2015 07:54 PM by greatview | 14 comments »

I replaced the stock head in my DW735 with a new Shelix spiral head. It seem as if the Shelix diameter is slightly less that that of the stock head. I had to remove the blades in order to pull the old head out as they were a larger diameter than that of bearing and I couldn’t remove it intact. The Shelix head goes through the bearing seat thus is smaller that the diameter of the stock head. Clearly the entry side is closer than before. In other words, I have to crank down the u...

Works good for my needs

Works good for my needs

Decided to purchase a bench top planer to use in my limited space garage (car, boat, mower, snow blower, kids bikes). My only experience with planers has been with grizzly and powermatic 220v units. I researched which bench top unit to buy for a few weeks. My factors were cost and availability. I make a lot of small projects and typically work with rough cut lumber in 2-4’ lengths. The planer was easy to setup out of the box. Tables are small but have adjusters to help with ...

20: single surface planer

Gave this planer a good workout today. Between the jointer yesterday and the planer today ended up with 6 55 Gal. drums of shavings. The planer performed great no problems at all. The helical head a lot quieter than knives. Reduced the 6” dust port to 4” and everything got sucked right out, another great tool!

A real workhorse

A real workhorse

I’ve had this planer for almost 2 years now so I’ve had plenty of time to make up my mind I think. I got it as a package with the add-on tables and an extra set of blades. Out of the box all I needed to do was get the tables attached and it was ready to go. One thing to know going into this you need something to direct the chips off of it. The chip blower REALLY works and wood chips will be flying all over. I made the mistake of using it without anything and it looked like a torna...

New Oliver 4420 16 inch planer with Helical Head

New Oliver 4420 16 inch planer with Helical Head

03-07-2015 07:05 PM by bons | 4 comments »

I just got my new Oliver 4420 16” planer moved into my workshop. My workshop is a work in progress as I look forward to working less (NOT “RETIRING”) and spending time “working wood”. At 670 lbs., it was a challenge to get into my walk out basement workshop. I Rented a 1000 lbs. capacity dolly, recruited 3 really young, really big guys from our church home, fed them a “lumberjack’s ” breakfast and we went to work. I had built a ramp from 3/4 pl...
