The perfect saw for my needs and space

_First things first, my star rating reflects the saw’s use and value to me and my needs. So may be higher for me than it would be for you, and that’s perfectly fine. Also, the review is also coming from somebody still new to the hobby so may lack the technical details found in other reviews. You can get specs and more information at the Craftsman website The “centerpiece” to my tool collection and budding attempt at a workshop comes after a long and frustrating two ...

A vintage miterbox worth owning.

A vintage miterbox worth owning.

I see many reviews of contemporary tools by modern manufacturers. However, given that many woodworkers purchase vintage tools for their own use, I thought it would be valuable to write a review about one of them. My goal here is to answer the question, “Is a Stanley #60 miterbox worth buying?” Spoiler alert. Answer. Yes, it is. My sample came from an estate sale. It was so minty that I couldn’t resist handing over $15.00 to take it home. Based on the crappy saw han...

Long term review, the good, and the bad.

Long term review, the good, and the bad.

I have had this saw for several years, and have used it quite extensively and I think I have found, and worked the bugs out of it, more or less. I have a write up on my blog of course at http://daves-workshop.blogspot.com/2014/02/chicago-electric-98194-12-sliding.html but to summarize… The blade and dust collection issues I noted early on hold as true today as they did then, which is why I built the dust hood. I don’t find the dust collection to be any worse than other sliders ...

Ultimate in accuracy and space savings

Ultimate in accuracy and space savings

I purchased the Bosch axial glide 10” dual bevel miter saw to replace a 20 year old Makita that I just plain wore out. I really wanted to increase the capacity of my miter saw for years but didn’t want to expand the depth of my cut off table and give up valuable floor space. Then the 12” axial glide was released a few years back. Again, I wanted to stay with a 10” saw because of the investment already made in 10” saw blades, all my blades are Forrest and all my s...

An oldie but a goodie

An oldie but a goodie

I purchased this new in ‘96 from Woodworkers Whse, in a package deal with a stand for ~$400. Milwaukee chop saws and sliders were the king of the hill back then, as the only dual bevel miter SCMS on the market, with the motor mounted high and belt drive, was the Hitachi, and it was a lot more expensive. This is b4 the day of the 12” DeWalt sliders, which took over the market several years later. This saw has proven to be a real work horse. I was building a timber frame house...

If our looking to buy a new mitersaw consider this one

If our looking to buy a new mitersaw consider this one

I got this saw about 3weeks ago, and let me just say i love this thing!!! it’s definitely a manly saw. first off it has a TON of power i just cut a 3×3 blank of hard maple no problem what so ever, and I’ve been using the blade that came with it (12’‘x1 60 tooth) to my surprise the blade is actually a decent one. I really like the slider action on it it’s nice and solid. The miter stops and scale are dead on, as for the bevels they needed a “little tuni...

new slider on site.

new slider on site.

We had someone steel the new 10” makita slider and the old turd of a dewalt slider from the jobsite last week. we are trimming out a hotel and have to have the tools on sight so the boss picked up a new dewalt at the BORG. I am a fan of the dewalt. I have used this saw 12 hours a day for the last 5 days and it has probably cut a few miles of trim between the two shifts. it was dead nuts right out of the box. it has performed so well that I told him to pick up another one on his way...

Dewalt 713 miter saw

Dewalt 713 miter saw

dead nut perfect miters right out of the box. It is shipped with a 40 tooth, thin kerf combination blade. This blade did a better job than my freshly sharped 80 tooth. So I put the Dewalt blade back on. This saw is moderately priced and is very much so worth the bucks. Uncle Snail I realize the picture of the coffee table I built has absolutely nothing to do with the saw review but how interesting can a saw pic be?

A pleasant surprise from the Home Depot

A pleasant surprise from the Home Depot

It all started when my father in law gave his Craftsman radial arm saw. I am am his favorite son in law after all (my wife is an only child.) Well I soon found out that life is too short to mess with with a Craftsman radial arm saw. When I finally got the thing aligned and running the blade would slow down and jam in the wood and it would be out of alignment all over again. Not wishing to inflict this pain on another human being I took the dang thing to the dump. The man working there seemed...

Ridgid MS-UV Miter Stand

Ridgid MS-UV Miter Stand

I can’t say enough good things about this stand but I’ll try and highlight all the things I like about it . First is the tubing size , it’s a whooping 1 3/4” tube , it screams heavy duty . It folds up super easy and stores nicely where ever you put it . The wheels are large and solid and roll over grass and stones with ease . The work extensions aren’t nothing fancy but will serve you well , they extend out 32” from the main part and have adjustable stops...
