A pleasant surprise from the Home Depot

A pleasant surprise from the Home Depot

It all started when my father in law gave his Craftsman radial arm saw. I am am his favorite son in law after all (my wife is an only child.) Well I soon found out that life is too short to mess with with a Craftsman radial arm saw. When I finally got the thing aligned and running the blade would slow down and jam in the wood and it would be out of alignment all over again. Not wishing to inflict this pain on another human being I took the dang thing to the dump. The man working there seemed...

An oldie but a goodie

An oldie but a goodie

I purchased this new in ‘96 from Woodworkers Whse, in a package deal with a stand for ~$400. Milwaukee chop saws and sliders were the king of the hill back then, as the only dual bevel miter SCMS on the market, with the motor mounted high and belt drive, was the Hitachi, and it was a lot more expensive. This is b4 the day of the 12” DeWalt sliders, which took over the market several years later. This saw has proven to be a real work horse. I was building a timber frame house...

straight-up the best miter saw I've ever used

straight-up the best miter saw I've ever used

I’ll start out by saying that after years of wrestling with big 10” and 12” size miter saws and sliding compound miter saws, this little bugger is a revelation. Like most of us, a miter saw is a heavily used tool in my shop, and like most of us, the slide rails suck up more space than I can sacrifice in my shop. Being a happy Festool owner, I had pondered the Kapex, which does not have this problem, but at $1400, it’s a non-starter and doesn’t have the usual Fes...

Tough, Affordable, Accurate Saw

Tough, Affordable, Accurate Saw

It’s about time somebody posts a review… I’ll take up the baton… I was thinking about all the tools in my shop, and the one that stands out as earning its money back many times is my chopsaw. I bought this saw quite a long time ago (I was in high school, to be honest). To date, I have only ever adjusted the fence a tiny bit, and swapped out dull blades. The saw has served me well and maintained power and accuracy to this day. The DW703 is the saw I own (the firs...

Makita 10" Sliding Miter Saw

Makita 10" Sliding Miter Saw

I have used this saw for a little over a year now, I have completed a few projects with it, but it doesn’t see daily service. I have used Dewalt, Hitachi, Ryobi, Porter Cable Saws previously. After reading several reviews, I was choosing between the Bosch, Makita & Festool, Accuracy is very good. Weight is very good, Ease of use is pretty good. The blade brake seems to be wearing out, very prematurely in my opinion. This saw doesn’t see heavy use, so I wouldn’t ...

Milwaukee 12-in Dual-Bevel Compound Miter Saw

Milwaukee 12-in Dual-Bevel Compound Miter Saw

After 10 years of reliable service, I decided to update my Miter Saw station (i.e. bench with a single bevel DeWalt miter saw sitting on top). My decision was based my son now having a workshop where I could “will” him tools which could stimulate his interest in woodworking. This would give me a good excuse to upgrade to a miter saw which has been designed to capture the saw dust from the cut. I do not have the funds for a Kapex, which has been touted as the gold standard for miter saws,...

Nice "extra" saw to have on-hand

Nice "extra" saw to have on-hand

I was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars. I ultimately went with four because, in the end, the saw meets my needs and expectations. But it took a bit of work to get it there I work out of a one-car garage which I share with lawn care tools and my kids bikes, scooter, etc. Oh, and there is also a snap-on rollbox and a motorcycle in there somewhere too :) That said, I have to get creative with how I store my woodworking stuff which includes five floor machines, workbench, etc. Granted, m...

Bosch Miter Saw Crown Molding Stops

Bosch Miter Saw Crown Molding Stops

What is there to say but these are a must have. installation is not to too bad depending on the miter saw you have. And you may have to modify/shorten the tightening knobs. in my case things would have gone much smoother if I had removed the saw from my flip stand. I didn’t use the 4 short screws that come with the set since I was also in no mood to tap the holes and besides on most miter saws the metal is too thin and soft so I got few 8-32 screws and nuts and shortened them. the set ...

A good starter miter saw or second miter saw for fast work

A good starter miter saw or second miter saw for fast work

I am not sure if this saw is still available with the exact specifications and model number of this one, but they do have one in the same price class: $99.00 and it probably works just as well. As with all models in this size class, the saw can cut a 2×6 at 90 degrees and a 2×4 at 45. The miter-lock handle in right in front and the bevel release is in the back. It can bevel in one direction out to 45 degrees and the motor is a decently powerful 14-amp job. It comes with a decent ...

New affordable sliding mater saw

New affordable sliding mater saw

Hey True Believers, I’ve needed a new miter saw for too long now, and had actually purchased a 10” Skil from WorkShop tools. A couple weeks back I saw on their website that they had generic SLIDING miter saw for about 140.00. It was TD 10” Sliding Miter saw. Well, I’ve been trying to figure out where to put a big Radial arm saw I had (and had never used) and ended up taking the plunge with the new sliding miter instead. Since I had never opened up the box with...
