1-2-3 Block. 123 uses around the shop

Want a cheap way to check the “squareness” of machine fences, table saw blades, drill press chucks, and any other 90# angle in the shop?? Check out this set of 1-2-3 blocks. I bought this pair off Amazon for $10ish bucks several months ago. Several different types of these blocks are available from different manufacturers at widely varying price points. This model, was the cheapest. However, I can’t seem to find any flaws despite the low price. I’m sure the expensive ...

Vintage squares for those who want the best they can afford.

Vintage squares for those who want the best they can afford.

What’s the best combination square around? While some will give their high priced favorites, most will say Starrett. And why not? It’s a proven tool. A new one will set you back about a hundred bucks, but fifty years from now it will still be straight, accurate and easy to read and use. You’re never going to hear me say a Starrett isn’t top of the line. But for those of us who want save our hundred dollar bills for more important things, there are other options that I argue are just as goo...

Great Caliper

Great Caliper

I have to tell you, there are plenty of measuring instrument companies out there offering fractional reading digital calipers cheaper than this one. When I first got this in my hands at our monthly sales meeting, and experienced the ultra smooth movement on the slide, and the fact that it returns to zero every time, I was intrigued. The guys at Insize approached our company about becoming a dealer. They brought in many measuring instruments, and passed them around the room. Every one I ...

Plumb It exendable level

Plumb It exendable level

This is a review about a level I’ve been using for the last 15 years or so. The manufacture, called PlumbIt makes several models of aluminum levels that are capable of extending from about four feet to nearly twenty two feet in lentgh. The model I have, closed measures 63” and will extend to 13’ 10”. These are some pretty unique levels because the length of the level can be set anywhere within their operating range with just a sqeeze of the handle. This makes this a l...

A must have tool

A must have tool

A very handy and true square. The locking mechanism could be of a better quality as the ruler slides with a bit difficulty on it and locks not so easily the spring lock mechanism is not so good. Other than that is a must have tool. Due to its locking problem and besides that is a great tool I will give it only 3 stars. Axminster’s Description: This is a gem of a square, nicely made and very versatile. With a stock length of 62mm (2.1/2”) and a blade length of 100mm (4”) it is j...

Handy little gadget

Handy little gadget

I picked this up to keep for cabinet installation (scribing filler panels and scribing strips). For less than $20 you get a handy little gadget that stays with me every time I do layout. The arm is articulated like a human finger and very easy to adjust. It seems solid enough for every day cabinet installs for the commercial folks and has all the niceties that the artisan craves in layout tools. Inexpensive, practical, go for it! Bonus points for a built in pencil sharpener!

Kerfmaker - Bridge City

My wife surprised me with this last night. Hey, I deserved it. That snowblower doesn’t steer itself :) What it does: (see link. it explains it better than I can)http://www.bridgecitytools.com/Products/KM-1+Kerfmaker Here’s another review showing what it does:http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/1154 Impressions:I knew it would be small so I wasn’t surprised there. I immediately went to loosen the thumb screws and mess around with it, but I couldn’t get the silv...

Angle reader/finder

Angle reader/finder

I recently learned how to sharpen my own chisels and plane irons. I was having a hard time when it came to all the different bevels. I bought a cheaper honing jig that works well but it does not measure the angle I am honing. I tried using a protractor and had some success but I still felt I was off. I was looking at Rockler tools online and saw this item was on sale. It had good reviews and the price seemed good so I ordered it. The item arrived ready to use. There were no complicated ...

A Better Layout Tool

A Better Layout Tool

I posted a longer review of this tool on website, but in short the Brumley Tools’ Trim Gauge has become my go to tool for measuring and laying out. It’s incredibly easy to use, more compact than a combination square, and as I typically need to do multiple layouts, it’s nice that you get three in a kit: 2 4”, 1 8”. I won’t lie and say that they are inexpensive but of late my Trim Gauges are one of favorite go to tools in the shop.

Tune your machines to perfection, Install jointer knives flawlessly

Tune your machines to perfection, Install jointer knives flawlessly

I’ve been reviewing some of my favorite Harbor Freight gems and this is the latest: The Cen-Tech 623 Dial Indicator. I’ve wanted a machinist dial gauge for a while, they’re fantastic for fine tuning your workshop machines, adding super precision to jigs, even easily and accurately installing jointer knives. But they are usually pricey in my opinion, especially when you add the stand. But Harbor Freight has come through again! First of all, if you check it out on the we...
