I bought this moisture meter on Prime Day partially based on the price ($18) and the 400+ reviews with an average rating of 4.3. I wasn’t expecting tremendous accuracy although the manufacturer claimed ± 1%. I was hoping for consistency. My thought was that if the wood got to a constant moisture content, it would be ready to use. Unfortunately, when I tested 4 samples of wood that has been in my air conditioned shop for months, the values ranged from 1% to 20%! I also brought home ...

2nd Joy upon my eyes

2nd Joy upon my eyes

This follows my “Wixey WR 550 remote planer readout review for my Jet 15””, but this review is for the the smaller Wixey WR 510 upon my Rigid 13” planer. Yes, I have two planers so need 2 Wixey’s! I’ve been using the WR510 for a year and loved it for it’s accuracy and ease. I almost only give it 4 stars because it does not use the popular AAA batteries it’s bigger cousin WR 550 uses but instead uses the lithium coin type of battery (not somet...

Oh the joy upon my eyes

Oh the joy upon my eyes

I bought this Wixey WR 550 for Christmas but just got around to installing in on my Jet 15” planer. I followed fellow LJ “jwisbey” for installation after reading his review. I did not have spare metric socket head bolts so had to go to Ace Hardware to grab a couple. Whalla. Easy installation and easy calibration. Verified with calipers. The first run was off by 0.003.I originally purchased this because my eyes are starting to get old so the big numbers on the LCD scree...

Precision Machinist Square at a reasonable price

Precision Machinist Square at a reasonable price

I have been looking for a precision square to align may machines and also my combination squares. I found the PEC tools solid square on eBay. Un like most other low cost squares, it comes with a squareness specification : 0.0006”/6”. I checked it using a dial indicator, it indeed looks to be within that accuracy. You can find this square for sale here. Made in the USA, High precision all for $26! The only downside (if you could call it that) is that it does not come in a cas...

Good measurements, a bit of a break in period. (Updated review)

Earlier this week, I picked up one of these calipers as the battery on my old Neiko caliper had died and I wasn’t sure how to find a replacement (Since figured it out, but having a spare caliper can be a good thing!) Simply put, comparing this against my known good Neiko 01412A Pro-Quality Digital Caliper with LCD Screen and Standard/Metric/Fraction Conversion, Stainless Steel 6” caliper (as verified against a mess of higher end known good calipers and standards). The Pittsb...

I must say this measuring device is expensive, but well worth it. Works exactly as advertised. Straight out of the box, measured the inside of a box for the bottom rabbet. Transferred the measured rods to the table saw and cut my stock. It fit perfectly, not even an ants hair of a gap. I am sure I will make a box for it, to keep it all together….lol. If you are looking at purchasing, rest assured this is a quality tool that will last a very long time functioning exactly the w...

Low Cost and Accurate Shelf Edging for Plywood

Low Cost and Accurate Shelf Edging for Plywood

You may have seen something similar, but the thin rip jigs I came across were more complex. I decided to use one particular attribute, the pointed stick, and work from there. Here’s the short version of instructions: Put a point on a stick and clamp it to the table top. Cut a spacer from a plastic card or license plate. Measure the distance from the point to the fence with the rip fence against the blade and allow for the blade and card thickness. For example, I wanted 1/4” stri...

Accurate and Dependable

I have a large Bosch digital finder and liked it so much I thought I’d try this smaller version for projects that did not require the various capabilities of the larger unit. After doing so, I decided I need a few of them around for the shop and the work van. These work well for setting and checking angles when doing blade set ups on miter saws, table saws and band saws. They give a good read-out for inner and outer angles, such as when building picture frames. They are easy to ch...

For [Sloppy] Carpenters, Not Cabinet Makers

For [Sloppy] Carpenters, Not Cabinet Makers

I have a Bosch digital angle gauge I can and do rely on to accurately determine angles for cuts for things like crown molding. However, it isn’t something I want to carry around in my tool bag for occasional use. For that, I looked to the Starrett PRO SITE 505A. Unfortunately, my Dial Protractor, like so many others produced by Starrett, is about a half degree off. For example, if the black gauge reads “0,” the miter cuts shows “44.5.” For rough carpentry, an...

Install of iGaging DRO for 20" Grizzly planer

Install of iGaging DRO for 20" Grizzly planer

I just wanted to briefly share a different approach to mounting a DRO on a planer that does not require complicated fabrication. This is not meant to be a comprehensive product review but instead piggyback on a previous (and very good) review – http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/2573 There are two main differences in this approach. The first is using an aluminum extrusion as the main means of mounting the DRO to the planer. The extrusion used is 1” x 1.5” cross-section with...
