AccuScribe Pro - compass, offset marker, scribe...

I won this in a promo pack of FastCap and Proxxon goodies at my local Woodcraft grand opening. If I knew how useful this tool was I would have bought one a long time ago. The first thing I used this for was the obvious use – drawing circles. No surprises here, its the $0.99 compass I used in grade school … on steroids. The AccuScribe has multiple joints so the pencil can be adjusted to be perpindicular to the surface you are marking instead of angled. Each joint has a brass kno...

Veritas Micro-Adjust Wheel Marking GaugeYes I have seen that there are already a review this tool! But!!! I do not all agree in the judgment: I think it’s a excellent marking tool, I think it’s so delicate, and well made, that it makes any LJ want to touch it!It’s precise. It’s cutting a sharp spur. Its a pleasure to hold in your hand. What I do agree, are that the micro adjustment are not super useful, but I actually used it to fine tune the other day for my do...

Average Marking Gauge

Average Marking Gauge

I bought this marking gauge, because I thought it was better deal than the Tite-Mark. I was really disappointed with the the Micro-Adjustment on the Veritas. It requires you to use both hands to adjust the gauge. The instructions even tell you that you have to use both hands. Once adjusted the gauge works well and is accurate. If you want to buy Veritas, I suggest buying their standard marking gauge and save a few more bucks.

Excellent Marking knife

Excellent Marking knife

1728 days ago by FJPetruso | 9 comments »

Several years ago I purchased a spear point marking knife from Harbor Freight for 4 bucks. I used the marking knife all the time as it has a sharp angle to get into tight corners &, being spear point, it’s “ambidextrous”. It also has a rosewood handle. For probably being made in China it’s a Great Tool! Then one day I swept it up & tossed it out accidentally. I searched Harbor Freight’s site & found that they had discontinued the tool. After a se...

Incra Gauge - precision marking gauge

Incra Gauge - precision marking gauge

Well I thought I would start off my review with items that I would use throughout my apprenticeship and being a novice I will review items that I think are good for the average home DIY woodworking. Items that anyone can afford not tools that we can only dream about or keep on display because they are expensive but we can actually use. I pick the Incra Gauge as for my item to review, the reason for this is that this one tool I would use on all my projects and for me it has been a valuable...

A good tool for the price

A good tool for the price

On the Friday before my weekend o’sawdust I went the store closest to Lee Valley we have here in Brandon, Wooden Edge intending to buy just some nobs, T-nuts and mitre slot material for some jigs I was intending on making. Well the buying frenzy came over me (note to self: never go to hardware/tool stores with a loaded credit card) and I bought the required stuff but some baltic birch plywood, and this clamp thingy from Samona. The image of this tool is from the Samonoa web site (h...

One Great Marking Gauge

One Great Marking Gauge

It cost a little more than most marking gauges, but I love this guy. It’s incredibly easy to adjust, with only one hand. It’s amazing smooth when adjusting. The one I have is 7” long. It came with: the standard marking blade, 2 adjustable tenon blades, and 1 large cutting blade. You can buy this guage at several different sites. You can find out more about the gauge and other Glen Drake tools at their web site glen-drake.com.

Received my LaserKerf today and setup on my Dewalt 705 chop saw. All parts fine. Instructions on small cd and on web site. Special instructions for each supported saw. You need to buy special bracket for each saw per the web site. Good news and some not. Pros1) Does what is says. So now my 705 has a laser :-)2) Setup fairly easy (except below)3) Could align perfect to 2×4 and laser fills the kerf perfect.4) Good X alignment5) Good roll alignment.6) Safer. Having that line as ano...

No more un-square squares. This one is made from solid phenolic

No more un-square squares. This one is made from solid phenolic

I was notified via e-mail about this square and ordered one right away. It’s a bit pricey at $70, but I will only ever need one. The first thing I did when I got it was to check it for square. It was perfect. Not much more to say in that regard. The only drawback I can see that the material isn’t steel which means that it can be damaged it you aren’t careful. The holes for your hands makes it real easy to move around and position. It’s also nice and thick so it̵...

Veritas Saddle Square by Lee Valley

Veritas Saddle Square by Lee Valley

1213 days ago by Jim Crockett (USN Retired) | 10 comments »

I have always had problems wrapping a line around faces of a piece of stock – seems as though the two lines never accurately intersected at the edge. So I recently purchased a Veritas Saddle Square from Lee Valley. What a difference the proper tool makes! I can now accurately draw lines on all sides of the stock and it is accomplished quickly and easily. The Saddle Square is made of anodized aluminum, 2” wide. The two legs are 1-1/4” and 2-1/4” long and both end fa...
