So over the years it’s hit me that the tool I reach for most often, and use ALL THE TIME, is the combination square. Use it for rough squaring, for marking and layout quick 45 degree marks, general measurement and marking of depth, etc. I’ve been using a cheap one I got at Home Depot—I think it’s the “empire” brand. it’s been adequate, but it’s not exactly square, and more annoying the rule doesn’t want to stay where you set it—t...

Simplicity at Its Best

Simplicity at Its Best

I saw this gadget at Sawdust2’s and had to have one. I’d been looking for ‘something’ to make large arcs with – compass, oil drum, truck rim – and when I saw this I figured it was the best choice. You can buy it online at Rockler, or Woodcraft – both sell for $19.99. The M.Power Tri.Scribe These are great little items, very versatile. They attach to any flat ruler, square, etc. and can be used to make arcs/circles, straight lines, 2 paral...

Maybe round isn't such a good idea...

I just got this (for myself) for Christmas. Took it out of the package, took it to the shop, set it on the bench, turned away for something or other, and it rolled off the bench straight to the floor. Dinged up the marking wheel pretty good. It still makes a mark, but not as crisp as it should be. It’s my own fault for dropping it, but I’m thinking that the best designed tools shouldn’t roll, and that the brass body on this thing should have six or eight sides. It would...

When a square is not square...

When a square is not square...

I’ll make this review short and sweet. When it comes to try squares, they really only have to do one thing well—be square. I bought this inexpensive Crown 4” try square, not expecting any more or any less from it. Unfortunately, it failed in its primary purpose—it was only mostly square, and that just ain’t good enough. The specific problem was that the blade was indeed square to the base; however, the top of the blade was not parallel to the bottom. The las...

Veritas Saddle Square by Lee Valley

Veritas Saddle Square by Lee Valley

I have always had problems wrapping a line around faces of a piece of stock – seems as though the two lines never accurately intersected at the edge. So I recently purchased a Veritas Saddle Square from Lee Valley. What a difference the proper tool makes! I can now accurately draw lines on all sides of the stock and it is accomplished quickly and easily. The Saddle Square is made of anodized aluminum, 2” wide. The two legs are 1-1/4” and 2-1/4” long and both end fa...

Rockler Pencil Set

Rockler Pencil Set

I am not trying to fuel the never-ending debate on marking devices…...pencils, marking knives, scalpels, etc But, I ordered 3 of these Rockler Lead Holders……Rockler calls them “Cabinet Maker Pencil Sets….. and I really like them I am now down to using just two marking devices (not including marking gauges)….just pencil-type stuff. I either use these Rockler Lead Holders…..or I use the pocket knife with the disposable blade…..and then I can go as light or as deep as I want an...

Excellent Marking knife

Excellent Marking knife

Several years ago I purchased a spear point marking knife from Harbor Freight for 4 bucks. I used the marking knife all the time as it has a sharp angle to get into tight corners &, being spear point, it’s “ambidextrous”. It also has a rosewood handle. For probably being made in China it’s a Great Tool! Then one day I swept it up & tossed it out accidentally. I searched Harbor Freight’s site & found that they had discontinued the tool. After a se...

A $9.99 guage thats not bad

A $9.99 guage thats not bad

I purchased one of these gauges two years ago. And have found it worth the ten dollars I spent. It has a good brass knob and it will hold tight. The pins are of a good spring steel. After 2 years of use they are just as sharp as day one. I have just purchased a second one for general purposes. I do have a store near me so I am able to pick the one I purchase. I had to true up one of the pins on the original but it was not a big problem. The HF site has 2 reviews as follows:This is the first H...

A lifesaver for installing hinges, hooks, anything that requires a centered hole

A lifesaver for installing hinges, hooks, anything that requires a centered hole

Okay, for some of you this tool may be unnecessary. But whenever I have installed hinges, coat hooks, or anything else that requires a centered hole, I always seem to be just a hair off. I would carefully mark with a pencil, then use a punch to mark the hole, drill it carefully, and voila, I’d end up with screws that were almost centered . . . every time. Christopher Schwarz recommended this Starrett Punch, but I balked at the price tag. But I tried it, and I am glad I did. A bu...

Incra Gauge - precision marking gauge

Incra Gauge - precision marking gauge

02-14-2010 02:31 PM by Requiem | 8 comments »

Well I thought I would start off my review with items that I would use throughout my apprenticeship and being a novice I will review items that I think are good for the average home DIY woodworking. Items that anyone can afford not tools that we can only dream about or keep on display because they are expensive but we can actually use. I pick the Incra Gauge as for my item to review, the reason for this is that this one tool I would use on all my projects and for me it has been a valuable...
