While not, in my opinion, a professional level lathe this full-sized lathe is adequate for advanced hobbyists wanting to turn spindles longer than popular midi lathes allow and it does a nice job turning turning shallow bowls. I have not turned pens so do not know how it performs for that more precision task. Assembly is straightforward and waiting until the 170 pound lathe is placed in its final location before tightening the stand’s bolts allows installation on an uneven concrete ...

My first lathe.

My first lathe.

10-04-2011 03:42 PM by joey bealis | 1 comment »

To start this off i want everyone to know that this is my first lathe and the only one i have ever turned on. Also its the only one i have seen in person. I left the lathe with dust on it so i would not get ragged for having a unused shop. As per request from a patron on this LJ’S i waited a few months after receiving lathe before doing a review. I have turned close to one hundred projects on this lathe so far. Now for the review lets start with a little information on the lathe. Mot...

The Galbert Caliper (The Turner's Tape Measure)

The Galbert Caliper (The Turner's Tape Measure)

I know, I know I just started turning. But when I saw this I knew it was the way to go (since spindles and legs are my goal) and I knew I’d need to stop and measure diameter lot of times on each one. I almost got one of the double calipers, but they require one hand to hold and the other to measure the outboard end. This is easily one handed and you read the diameter, lay it down and keep on going. It has already told me that I am highly accurate, but not smooth or fast yet̷...

A Beginner's Dream

A Beginner's Dream

I did my first wood turning when I was about 13. It was in wood shop in school, and I made 2 or 3 pieces—a bowl and a bat for sure. It was fun, but it was also TERRIFYING! The lathes we had were industrial sized monsters with motors that could lift the Titanic, and more than once did I have a catch that bent the chisel, once it launched it towards the window I was standing near with rather catastrophic results. More recently I started looking up some videos on YouTube about wood t...

Awesome Bang for the Buck

Awesome Bang for the Buck

09-10-2011 02:48 AM by DurocShark | 7 comments »

I’ve had several lathes over the years, starting with the cheap HF stamped steel lathe (no MT in the headstock??), then the hundred buck HF mini lathe (great for pens), a PSI TurnCrafter Pro (just OK), and then a Delta 70-700 with the Reeves drive (noisy!) I sold the Delta recently to make space in my “shoparage”. It was a nice lathe but took a LOT of space. And since I mostly do small turnings it didn’t make sense to keep tripping over it. Once I got that sold, I f...

Amazing lathe for amazing price

Amazing lathe for amazing price

I was looking for a starter lathe, and found the website http://www.edmwi.com/home/edm/page_1225_164/new_electric_wood_lathe__table_top_40_industrial_4.htmlI was surprised with the price. Only $89. I thought it was too good to be true but figured I would give it a try. I thought if the thing ends up being fake or plastic I can always try and sell it on craigslist. When it arrived in the mail I was amazing by the size of the box. After opening I was again shocked. The thing is huge, over 4&...

Top class little lathe.

Top class little lathe.

I bought this little honey about 2 mts ago and have gotten very fond of it in the mean time. It has takensome hard abuse from my awkward, inexperienced hands but we are still friends and I am certain that I have gotten very good value for money.I was impressed right from the off with the weight of it and the general sturdy construction. It has 5 speeds that are easy to change (650 – 3000rpm) and it will turn a 10in o/d which is more than a few of them in the same price-range. 17.5in is ...

Well made, no assembly instr, Lathe doesn't work

Well made, no assembly instr, Lathe doesn't work

I bought the 10” VS TurnCrafter Pro after reading all the reviews I could find. Built and finished a stand for it, read the user manual twice, then set about putting it together. The thin plastic “zip lock sandwich-bag-style” packaging was ripped so I had to hunt for the contents. And with no instructions I had to go by the diagram in the user manual to see for example that a short handle needs to be added to the adjusting wheel on the back of the tailstock. The wiring to th...

Finest out of the box machine I've ever owned.

Finest out of the box machine I've ever owned.

As soon as I opened the box, I could tell Delta really put forth an effort to release a quality product. Much more Styrofoam than I am use to, making the box for this unit is very big. Everything was very well organized and in very good condition. Fit and finish was the best I have seen on a sub 1000.00 piece of equipment. Everything took about 20 minutes to assemble (including removing it from the box). Assembly consisted of placing the Live Center and Spur Center in the lathe and setting...

Nice new lathe thats 23 years old

Nice new lathe thats 23 years old

I just had the opportunity to purchase a very well maintained (Very little use) Delta DL40. It has a digital variable speed control that is on the front in the middle or can be relocated to the end near the tail stock. It has a 1.5hp motor that is also reversible with a push of a button. There is an enormous 48+ inches between centers and a 16 inch potential for bowls on the right side and 24 inch bowl on the outside of the head stock. I was also fortunate to obtain three face plates, ste...
