Central machinery harbor freight lathe review

I did a you tube review of this lathe and figured it might be helpful on here for someone. I’ve owned it for over 2 years with no issues really to complain about. I was nervous when I bought it but didn’t have the extra cash at the time when my previous lathe kicked the bucket. https://youtu.be/XNZwXpc5TdE

Revo set-up

Revo set-up

My shop was designed to house a heavy lathe and has a 6’ x 6’ x 20” slab which has the main beam for the crane sunk down 18” into the slab. The lathe is set directly under the path of the crane to help load heavy objects onto the spindle. This has proved over the years to be invaluable.I decided not to use the leveling feet but used shims to level the machine and then bolted the head stock end to the main beam of the shop and also bolted the tail-stock end to the floor...

I ordered my new Lathe from Packard and had it delivered to a friends cabinet shop where they loaded it on to a pickup and brought it to my shop. I have an overhead crane system which moves out to the middle of my drive and enables me to lift objects out of a truck bed or trailer. My first objective was to remove the lathe from the box without destroying the box in case I wanted to return it or move it in the future. Before removing the lathe I found the plug and tested to see if it would fit m...

Jet 1640 EVS - First Impressions

Jet 1640 EVS - First Impressions

When I started turning I bought a Rikon 70-220vsr midi lathe. Its a great lathe and served my needs quite well until I decided I wanted to go bigger. Two months ago I found a Jet 1642 for sale a few hours away and later that afternoon it followed me home. What a great lathe, but it lacked one feature that I was hoping to have in a new lathe. Because of some challenges that I have with my feet and back I find it difficult at times to stand at the lathe or to bend over the bed when hollowing. F...

This incident is about “False advertising” and “using 1 HP inverter on a 1 ½ HP Motor” on the Grizzly G0632 wood lathe”.09-30-14 I ordered a wood lathe (G0632) including various wood working accessories.Once the lathe arrived and I had it assembled, I noticed that the inverter would cut-out frequently when operating the lathe. I called Grizzly and they shipped a replacement inverter. There was an issue with the first shipment of the inverter, as someone had picked the wrong item and instead o...

Turncrafter Commander 12" VS Midi Lathe

Turncrafter Commander 12" VS Midi Lathe

I had purchased a Harbor Freight 10”X18” about a year ago to turn pens and some other little things in my shop. My Powermatic was just too ungainly to do a pen on. My problem was that the HF was a PITA to change speeds, and to do a pen properly, I find it necessary to do two speed changes for a total of about three speeds for each pen. (Cutting/shaping/sanding/finishing/polishing) I decided that since the pens started to sell nicely, I would upgrade to a VS lathe. I looked ...

After 10 days of research and comparison I decided on a Jet . Many factors were resolved but the hangup was finding a lathe at the best price from a company that would give confidence in the purchase and the process. I wanted to save the $170 sales tax dollars too. So I got on line looking for the lathe. What I found was lots of companies that did not have the 1642 in stock. Finally, I found one on ebay (eqss1) and at a price 600 bucks less than anyone else. Too good to be true. Long...

Background: I purchased this lathe used from a woodworking club and it saw plenty of use. I have owned it for about 6 months. They were having a problem with it overheating and shutting down and sold it relatively cheap. The control box has vents on top that allow dust and chips to fall into the box and it had become packed with detritus blocking airflow to the electronics. After cleaning out the box I’ve had no problems with it shutting down. This is the 4th lathe I’ve owned and ...

Nova DVR Galaxi Lathe Enhancements

In my first review of this new lathe, I brought up 3 things that I felt needed improvement. One was the tailstock quill thread that was reversed, the second was the indexing was hard to read and the third was the on/off switches being flat and in different locations. Well two out of three are fixed and the third I’ll have to live with ( maybe). The new quill and screw were installed in the tailstock but I had to relocate the key pin to the bottom so I could read the graduations that ...

I love my lathe … but I hate the built-in indexing system! Enter the Alisam Engineering Indexing System ( http://alisam.com/page/14g9e/Woodworking_turning_OT.html ) Here is what the manufacturer says about it: The system consists of a 10 inch, extensively laser engraved with index lines every 5 degrees and degree marks every 15 degrees, anodized aluminum plate with the appropriate ID for your spindle, with three concentric rows of indexing holes. There are three rows of indexing h...
