Nice new lathe thats 23 years old

I just had the opportunity to purchase a very well maintained (Very little use) Delta DL40. It has a digital variable speed control that is on the front in the middle or can be relocated to the end near the tail stock. It has a 1.5hp motor that is also reversible with a push of a button. There is an enormous 48+ inches between centers and a 16 inch potential for bowls on the right side and 24 inch bowl on the outside of the head stock. I was also fortunate to obtain three face plates, ste...

The Galbert Caliper (The Turner's Tape Measure)

The Galbert Caliper (The Turner's Tape Measure)

I know, I know I just started turning. But when I saw this I knew it was the way to go (since spindles and legs are my goal) and I knew I’d need to stop and measure diameter lot of times on each one. I almost got one of the double calipers, but they require one hand to hold and the other to measure the outboard end. This is easily one handed and you read the diameter, lay it down and keep on going. It has already told me that I am highly accurate, but not smooth or fast yet̷...

My first lathe.

My first lathe.

To start this off i want everyone to know that this is my first lathe and the only one i have ever turned on. Also its the only one i have seen in person. I left the lathe with dust on it so i would not get ragged for having a unused shop. As per request from a patron on this LJ’S i waited a few months after receiving lathe before doing a review. I have turned close to one hundred projects on this lathe so far. Now for the review lets start with a little information on the lathe. Mot...

While not, in my opinion, a professional level lathe this full-sized lathe is adequate for advanced hobbyists wanting to turn spindles longer than popular midi lathes allow and it does a nice job turning turning shallow bowls. I have not turned pens so do not know how it performs for that more precision task. Assembly is straightforward and waiting until the 170 pound lathe is placed in its final location before tightening the stand’s bolts allows installation on an uneven concrete ...

As the price falls, the rating rises

I found this Jet JWL 1236 lathe on Craigslist and just got it home and set up today. I’ve gone over many reviews of this lathe on the web, and the couple hours use I’ve had today have proven some of the gripes right. I put a 4×4 on it and rounded it, and I found it has a rattle coming from somewhere but the lathe doesn’t shake like some have said. It seems to have enough weight to keep from dancing around. The rattle I think is made worse by the dull tools I was using, ...

Bowl Making Machine

Bowl Making Machine

I bought this lathe used 2 years ago from my neighbor who also turned bowls with it. It’s powerful and easy to use. It will turn up to 38” spindles and turn 15” bowls inboard and up to 20” bowls outboard. I have made about 100 bowls with it and the only issue was the cooling fan belt slipped off once, easy fix. The headstock and tailstock are aligned perfectly and it accepts all the popular accessories like other brands. It may not be a Jet or Nova, but it is buil...

Great Beginners Lathe

Great Beginners Lathe

I have been very impressed with this lathe. Although this review is based off of no other experience from any other lathes, I have to give it a high rating. It is by far the least expensive lathe on the market and with the famous 20% off discount from harbor freight can be bought for under $100. I picked mine up for $96 at our local harbor freight. This lathe has variable speed dial that is very convenient to work on your piece from turning, sanding, and finishing. I would recommend this l...

Great little lathe to get starting with woodturning!

Great little lathe to get starting with woodturning!

It’s very gunky when you first take it out of the box. But after a good cleaning, I installed it on a mastercraft metal stand. When I rev up the speed, there can be some vibration, but nothing that is worrying. I love the electronic variable speed control. When I noticed that some more expensive lathes do not even include this feature, I was shocked. Once you taste the feature, you probably don’t ever want to go back to pulleys and belts or whatever else they use. There’s so...

The big little lathe that couldn't...

In this review, I do a lot of comparing with the Mastercraft 12” lathe, because that’s the only other lathe I’ve ever used and that’s the one I was looking at replacing. I went to my local Rona (hardware store in Quebec City) during my lunch break and saw a lathe. Hmm, I thought. Interesting. It seemed well build (very well build actually: solid and uses an MT2 instead of MT1 like my mastercraft lathe, which, as I start buying accessories for my lathe, seems to now ...

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

I bought this used, and having used it for the past couple of months, I thought I’d post a review. For background, my first lathe was a Jet Mini. I turned on that for about a year, then wanted to do larger work, so I upgraded to a Nova DVR. Both of these are excellent lathes. I have become much more serious about turning, and I’m moving toward larger hollow forms, and large platters/bowls. When I decided to upgrade (again), I researched quite a few large lathes – Robust...
