I bought this used, and having used it for the past couple of months, I thought I’d post a review. For background, my first lathe was a Jet Mini. I turned on that for about a year, then wanted to do larger work, so I upgraded to a Nova DVR. Both of these are excellent lathes. I have become much more serious about turning, and I’m moving toward larger hollow forms, and large platters/bowls. When I decided to upgrade (again), I researched quite a few large lathes – Robust...

So you may remember that in my last shop tour I gave a quick mention to my new lathe the Axminster AWVSWL1200 which appears to me to be the same as the Laguna1847. A few of you have asked me for more detail and what i think of the lathe so here it is! It was quite a long article so check it out on my website: thiswoodwork.com Here is the link: http://thiswoodwork.com/axminster-awvswl1200-laguna-1847/

For a small lathe, or starter lathe, not bad at all.

For a small lathe, or starter lathe, not bad at all.

I have owned a Powermatic 3520B for quite a few years, with a Stronghold chuck and a fair amount of extra tools. One thing I kept noticing, it just wasn’t that good for small things. Hard to move around those big tool rests, and I just could not get myself to pay somebody $78 for a six inch tool rest. Plus, I hated to take off the Stronghold every time I wanted to do something smaller. Since I had an empty small bench right next to it, I started looking into a small lathe, one I c...
