Restored the lathe I bought

I found this Delta Lathe off of Craigslist for 450.00.. I have been looking for this particular lathe for years.. I passed up a chance to buy one about 15 years ago..and regretted it ever since.. when I got this one home.. it was not in bad shape, but I wanted to really refurbish it and give it a new life.. It’s solid..I mean solid!! heavy cast iron everything..I could not find any of the blue/gray paint that Rockwell/Delta uses, so I completely sanded off all the old paint all the way...

Knowing that the lathe itself is just the tip of the financial iceberg when it comes to wood turning, I needed to control costs wherever I could without sacrificing quality I searched, talked with the club representatives at the various woodworking shows etc… And the response came back about the Jet JWL 1236 and its CLONES… It would appear this lathe had been rebranded by several companies, including, but not limited to Grizzly, MasterCraft, and for those of us that are a bit on t...
Nova 1624-44 Lathe Review

Thanks go to Tim Dorcas for his thorough review on the 1624-44. It helped me a lot with my choice. Instead of rehashing Tim’s review I will outline anything I have discovered or observed since his review and highlight my likes/dislikes. I have had my eye on the 1624 for a while and I decided to buy because Woodcraft had them in stock and on sale this month. My Jet 1220 was on its way to a new home this morning thanks to Craigslist. My impressions after 4 days with the 1624: Ass...

About a month ago, I decided I wanted another lathe. I was getting frustrated with my King Mini Lathe in regards to vibration and having to constantly switch the belt to change speeds. I had about $1000-$1200 which put me in the category of mid level lathe. It came down to a Craftex CT128 which is a copy of the Laguna 18/47 and the Nova 1624-44. The Craftex is bigger, has a bit more horse power, includes variable speed and an incredibly sturdy stand. The biggest negatives were that it was 2...
The best deal I ever got!

I was looking at lathes for almost two years before I purchased this one.I previously owned (still do) a JET Mini 1014 (non VS) and was very happy for it – except for the size limit – 10” is a little too small when you want to turn a platter or a salad bowl. However, money was a little tight and I sure couldn’t afford a Oneway or Vicmarc…Anyway I was checking out lathes and even found a chinese one selling for a decent price, but I was unsure of quality, living i...
PSI Variable Speed Midi Lathe Conversion Kit

Here at the arts and Crafts Center we’ve been doing a lot of turning classes (mostly pen, but also the occasional bowl or bottle stopper) in conjunction with the Wounded Warrior program at Walter Reed and with the help of the local chapters of the American Association of Woodturners. Through them we’ve been able to have donated or loaned to the shop, lathes, chisels, chucks and other supplies. One of the lathes that was donated to the program was a Fisch Midi Lathe (essentially ...
First lathe - Rikon Mini

If you have looked at the bowl project I posted you know I am a complete turning neophyte AND you know I don’t actually own a lathe. Until now! I was at The Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers’ annual meeting with a friend who suggested we make a trip to the neighborhood woodworking supply store. I thought it was a great idea because from where I live it’s an hour to either of the two stores (in the state, believe) that have cool stuff like lathes. He knows I have been ...
Modified MC900 Head
76 days ago by Woodbeatle | 2 comments »
I love the dbhost review and agree with all, The weight on the stand is needed, I have added a mod to the head as per attached photo. This acts as a giant clamp to lock the head to the bed, for turning boxed in access of 100mm diameter, as the head jumps a bit. Yes I know that this stops the head rotation, but it helps to steady the lathe I note that you talk of a manual. Is it possible to get a copy of the MC900 Manual, as I bought my lathe secondhand for A$75.00. I had to make up a few t...

Hey Everyone, Just got My Jet 1642 EVS pro 1 1/2 hp. Awesome. I will tell you the set up was easy, 1/2 hour at most, needed an extra set of hands to balance the legs while attatching the Way to them. Thank You Dann. It was my own fault, if I had read the directions I would have noticed that they will balace on their own if you do not attatch the feet first. In otherwords, Put it together first then lift the whole thing up and install the feet. Everything goes together very nicely. Fit ...
Ordered New Lathe Today

Today I ordered a new JET JWL-1442VSK wood lathe. The dealer did not have one in-stock, but it is to be delivered from the distribution center on Friday per his promise. I would like to thank ND2ELK for introducing me to LumberJocks.com. The reviews and forums were a great help to me. One of the reasons I chose this particular lathe is the accessories I have for my JET 1014 lathe are nearly all usable on the larger unit. My small lathe, which I have been using for three or four years, w...
