5th day with the New G0733

I had said in my Blog about the trip to Grizzly that I would post a review after using the new lathe for a bit. Well I have wasted no time. I have already been on it about 15 hours in five days. But a little history first. I have owned and used 7 lathes over the past 25 years. They have all been Step pulley or Reeves drive machines, until I modified the one I was using before I got the new lathe, It I had modified with a treadmill motor and controller, but tread mill motors are NOISY. S...

Could have been so much better....

I will start this review with an email that I sent to the Rikon Tech support team about a week ago. “I have had my 70-220VSR lathe for about a month now. First let me say that the customer service has been great. The CS department has done what they need to do so far to take care of me. I originally ordered the lathe through Woodcraft. The lathe showed up in a timely fashion. After unboxing, I conducted a function check and noticed that the spindle was not spinning true. I remo...

The New Rikon 70-220 VDR Wood Working lathe

The New Rikon 70-220 VDR Wood Working lathe

After a couple of weeks of near full time turning I think I can write a decent review of my new Midi Lathe. To date I’ve turned a couple of bowls, several pens and some Christmas ornamentsTo tell the truth I stopped in my local Woodcraft store to look at the Jet 1221. I was very surprised to see a Rikon lathe with virtually identical specs. The 70-220 VSR is an electronically controlled variable speed lathe, with reverse. It advertises a 12 1/2 inch swing over the bed, a 1 hp motor, e...

Nova DV 2024: Good lathe, good price point - some problems

Nova DV 2024: Good lathe, good price point - some problems

It’s been about six months since purchase, so I thought I’d share my thoughts on the Nova DVR 2024. Pros: I’ve been able to make some really satisfying turnings with it. (That’s the main thing! See picture.) The motor is an intelligent beast. The power is terrific, and the electronic control works as advertised. You can really hear it dig down for more push when you put a load on the workpiece. The service is good. I had a small problem at the beginning, but ...

Rikon 70-450 EVS Lathe Review: Solid Performance, Cost Saving Finish

Rikon 70-450 EVS Lathe Review: Solid Performance, Cost Saving Finish

The full review, with more photos, is posted on my blog at http://www.artistryinwood.info/?p=291 The text of the review follows: Rikon 70-450 20” EVS Lathe Review First, a little background on how I landed on this lathe: I started out a little over five years ago on a little 10” benchtop model from Harbor Freight. That got me hooked on turning and I quickly realized I needed bigger gear. Within a few months I had upgraded to a used Jet 1442VS. The Jet is a 14” x 42” 1HP lathe that we...

Great Value In A Lathe

Great Value In A Lathe

01-18-2014 06:16 PM by OSU55 | 14 comments »

I had never used a lathe for wood turning, and wanted to give it a try. I didn’t want to break the bank to have a lathe for occasional use. As others have, I wound up with this HF model. I haven’t tried anything larger than 6” dia, but so far I’m extremely pleased. I think I paid ~$180 with discounts. Although I’m new to turning, I’m not new to machinery of all types, and a wood lathe is a simple machine (I’ve been in automated manufacturing in eng...

New verses old

Having the Jet 1014 mini lathe and really loving it, and having no problems with it what so ever. I decided on the 1221VS model. Unboxing it was fun, my past lathes have been hand me downs and/or very used and in need of rebuilding. Upon opening I removed the lose goodies that came with it and lifted off the foam to reveal the site of a turners dream…mine anyway. After getting it unboxed I noticed NO live center….bummer! Just a call to get that taken care of easily. Noticing a...

New nova 1624-44 lathe from woodcraft

New nova 1624-44 lathe from woodcraft

12-29-2013 06:03 AM by Norm192 | 6 comments »

Just bought a nova 1624-44 lathe from woodcraft.$899. My previous, and first and only lathe, was a rikon 70-100. I have enjoyed it for about 3 years now. I have turned several 11-1/2” x 4”+ deep bowls on it. That’s maxed out. Great lathe but time to upgrade. The nova came well packaged. Assembly was simple and straight forward. Not impossible by yourself but an easy two man job.Banjo and tail stock lock down rock solid. No graduations on tail stock but operation is smooth. ...
