First lathe - Rikon Mini

First lathe - Rikon Mini

If you have looked at the bowl project I posted you know I am a complete turning neophyte AND you know I don’t actually own a lathe. Until now! I was at The Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers’ annual meeting with a friend who suggested we make a trip to the neighborhood woodworking supply store. I thought it was a great idea because from where I live it’s an hour to either of the two stores (in the state, believe) that have cool stuff like lathes. He knows I have been ...

jet mini lathe

This was my first lathe since middle school shop class. Back then I made a lamp for my mother that made it all the way to state finals. I was excited to get this in my shop and start turning on it and after several months it has performed flawlessly!! I have added the bed extension but not used the tool since adding it. The bed is very solid and the extension was easy to install and level. This model has the spindle lock and indexing head and operates at 500 – 3900 rpm. I think it is...

Pennstate Midi Lathe

Pennstate Midi Lathe

EDIT: I have now had this lathe for over a year now, and I am still very happy with it. I have now turned bowls, pens, spindles etc… on it, and it has done very well. I still haven’t pulled the trigger on the extension, but to be perfectly honest, I haven’t had a need for an extension yet. I did purchase a barracuda chuck system from PSI, as well as a new set of Benjamin Best lathe chisels. The motor has held up well, and I am still on the first belt that came with it....

Great Lathe for the money

Great Lathe for the money

A review of the Grizzly G0462 lathe was provided to this website about 10 months ago. I am sure that the author provided an honest assessment of his experiences with this lathe. However, my experiences have been different and I am providing a review based on my experiences with the same lathe. If you simply review the specifications and features, I think anyone would agree that this is a lot of lathe for the money. I paid $475 for this lathe and, at the time, Grizzly was offering fr...

I love it, but in a few years, look for it on eBay.

Did some turnings, so I’m ready for a review. The wife one day was looking through one of the mired of catalogs we get in the mail, and came across a cherry bowl for $300.00. She then proclaimed, “You can make that!”. There’s the buzzer, and their off! A green lite to buy tools!!!As it happened, Grizzly was putting on their “Tent Sale” in two weeks. I planned a weekend around it. With a stop at Hershey Park. The wife loved it, because well, she lov...

The big little lathe that couldn't...

In this review, I do a lot of comparing with the Mastercraft 12” lathe, because that’s the only other lathe I’ve ever used and that’s the one I was looking at replacing. I went to my local Rona (hardware store in Quebec City) during my lunch break and saw a lathe. Hmm, I thought. Interesting. It seemed well build (very well build actually: solid and uses an MT2 instead of MT1 like my mastercraft lathe, which, as I start buying accessories for my lathe, seems to now ...

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

I bought this used, and having used it for the past couple of months, I thought I’d post a review. For background, my first lathe was a Jet Mini. I turned on that for about a year, then wanted to do larger work, so I upgraded to a Nova DVR. Both of these are excellent lathes. I have become much more serious about turning, and I’m moving toward larger hollow forms, and large platters/bowls. When I decided to upgrade (again), I researched quite a few large lathes – Robust...

RIKON Customer Service - Thumbs Up

RIKON Customer Service - Thumbs Up

03-31-2010 03:38 PM by DaveMiller | 11 comments »

I have owned a RIKON Mini Lathe for about 3 years and have never had one problem with it. Through misuse/abuse on my part, a couple of parts needed to be replaced. I called RIKON customer service and was greeted very professionally by Dan. I told him I needed to order a few parts and he offerred to transfer me to the parts department which he did. After just a few seconds, Dan came back on and told me that all the parts guys were on the phone and he offerred to take my order. He was able...
