I lucked into the closeout deal at Woodcraft where it was being sold for $150. Shipping was $75. As I live in an apartment in NYC, I had it delivered to my sister’s house as she has both a garage and an SUV I could borrow to get it to my shop which is in Pennsylvania. It was shipped the same day and it arrived in three business days. I was concerned about how I would get it out of the truck, but the shipper had a liftgate and it was no problem. The best news was that it fit in my car: ...

Rikon 6" Jointer-Good buy if you can get it for the same price.

After debating for a while on which jointer to get, I decided on this Rikon. This is the first jointer I have owned so I don’t have any other to compare but it is well built compared to the others I have used. When I bought it, Woodcraft had it on clearance for $299, the regular price was $450, I couldn’t pass it up. It comes in 2 separate boxes, base/motor in one and the table/fence in the other, the total shipping weight was around 280 lb’s. The motor comes premounte...

This is why I trust Delta machinery :) I hope I am not coming off as a brand snob but this jointer is over 36 years old, AND STILL RUNNING ON THE ORIGINAL KNIVES TO BOOT!!!!!! I picked this up this spring from a guy at work who was getting rid of his shop and moving into a condo for $100 and with only the cord needing replaced from dry rot and rust from being in the basement it performs like it did coming out of the box :) Adding to this Parts are still available along with the Owners manual ...

Bear of a jointer with grizzly sharp teeth!

Bear of a jointer with grizzly sharp teeth!

I am mainly a cane maker so my wood working techniques or needs don’t require the same as that of a cabinet or furniture maker, but since I do use a LOT of very hard woods (Afromosia, Bloodwood, Cocobolo, Ebony, Jatoba, Osage Orange, Macadamia, Macawood, Padauk, Pink Ivory, Rosewood, Ziricote, etc.). I needed a quality jointer and wanted one with the cutting ability to get a nice smooth surface on these woods, especially the figured ones for my cane work and future furniture projects. ...

Delta Portable Jointer - so so even at $40 and with modification

Delta Portable Jointer - so so even at $40 and with modification

07-16-2010 03:44 AM by AaronK | 10 comments »

Bought it used off craigslist for $40. I spent about 4 hours on it getting it to what is its most usable form without major modification. I work slow, but figure you’ll probably have to spend at least half that time if you have the same problems I did…. and the other two reviewers here on LJ did too. Here’s what needed to be done: 1. shim infeed table to be coplanar with outfeed. Fortunately the tables are not warped, as far as I can tell. 2. adjust the blades to be level...

My New Delta 6" jointer

My New Delta 6" jointer

I just purchased the Delta 6” professional jointer.I did not consider better 8” jointer for mainly one reason: I do not have enough space in my garage / shop. I also did not have the luxury of actually seeing all these jointers before purchase. I went to several stores (Woodcraft, Rockler …) but none had any on display. They all volunteer to order it for me.Among several jointers that were suggested were the Delta 6” professional jointer, the jet 6” jointer and the grizzly jointer. I went f...

My Nightmare with Laguan Tools

My Nightmare with Laguan Tools

05-19-2010 05:13 PM by Caleb James | 39 comments »

I recently purchased a 16” jointer planer combo and 18” 3000 Series Bandsaw from Laguna Tools. It has turned into my worst nightmare. I have spent $6,245.83 on this order. It arrived damaged and I properly noted it on the freight bill. I contacted laguna about the most obvious damage to the band saw. The upper flywheel had come apart in shipping. I rebuilt it and it seems to work fine now. My nightmare starts really with the jointer. In short this machine should edge join using the fence, ...

Rock Solid Jointer!

Rock Solid Jointer!

I purchased this jointer this past weekend and I have already run a few feet of white oak without any problems. Pros:The manual was easy to follow and assembly was a snap. Plenty of power. Faced 6” white oak removing a 1/16 of inch no problem Reasonable foot print for small shop. I actually went to order the 8” Jet but after talking with my dealer I realized there was no way I could handle that unit by myself (unloading and assembly) and it would take up too much floor ...

Review of Grizzly 12" Jointer G609X With Sprial Cutter Head (Grizzly)

Review of Grizzly 12" Jointer G609X With Sprial Cutter Head (Grizzly)

The big machine was unloaded with a fork lift using straps under the beds. Grease was present mainly on the beds and fence and was removed with a single edge razor blade and WD-40. It was moved to position using ½” water pipe and two people. I have since built a rollerbase which is pictured; and also added a Wixley digital planer height gauge to it which is also pictured. Out of the box it required a little tweaking of the tables. The outfeed was a few thousandths out of level with the c...

This joint was jumpin...in the UPS truck!

Grizzly 6” Jointer G0452. Cons: As you can see in the photo, arrived damaged. The base is what was in that box, and the main damage was to the rear cover, (dented and scratched). In the main box with the head in it, the fence support was not packed well, and rolled around in the box, dinging everything, including minor scratches to the tabletop. In the base box, nothing was packed well, and everything else was dinged. The picture of the head is showing the caked axle grease that ge...
