This review is very long and specific. If you’re in a hurry I suggest reading the cons for both the planer and jointer, the finish quality cheat sheet, and the verdict and coming back to the review later. The first thing I did was put it on the HTC3000 mobile base. The base fits as well as I expected but could use better wheel bearings as this thing is extremely heavy. My 135 lb. self can move it on my own with some hard pushing though. After I got off all the shipping grease I c...

Review of DELTA X5 6" Professional Jointer

Review of DELTA X5 6" Professional Jointer

After my little Craftsman 4” jointer died, circ 1951, I decided to up grade. I looked at a lot of brands and me being a big Delta fan I decided to go with there DeltaX5 6” professional jointer. This machine comes in two boxes one contains the motor/stand, and other goodies. The other box has the jointer and fence system. Once again I have to deal with a heavy Delta box. The machine took about an hour to put together.. One thing that is nice is Delta already mounts the motor, and t...

Grizzly 8" jointer -- first impressions

Grizzly 8" jointer -- first impressions

I purchased the Grizzly G0656 helical head 8” jointer on June 11, and received it a few days ago. I have assembled it and tested it, and feel it is a good—though not perfect—tool. My rating also takes into account that this is very reasonably priced for an 8” helical head jointer; I would expect a little better fit and finish, with fewer issues, on a higher-priced machine. PICTURES: Plenty of pictures are available online: I included these to show a simple way to...

It has taken me a few weeks but I have finally got my new planer and jointer all adjusted and running. I ran about 30 bf a cherry through them for a project I am working on. This is the first Grizzly purchase that I have made and I will definitely look at Grizzly when I go to upgrade my 9” crapsman band saw that I got for $35 on Craig’s list. The fit and finish we about what I expected. I took about 5 minutes to file the sharp edges and scrape a few drops of paint off the jointer fenc...

The Blue Elephant In The Room

The Blue Elephant In The Room

When I decided to upgrade to a 12 Inch Jointer at the end of 2010 I researched many brands and models. Usual suspects like Powermatic, Delta, Grizzly, General, Shop Fox and even some of the Euro models at the urging of a respected colleague. The Euros were way out of my price range (I refuse to take out a loan to buy a machine as my colleague suggested). While researching the remaining brands I found this video of an Oliver on youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKMxIY0iGlw . The Oliver Machi...

Used Jet JJ-6CS jointer, seems to be a bargain

Used Jet JJ-6CS jointer, seems to be a bargain

I picked this up from a Craigslist ad recently for $200. SCORE!! I wanted the CSX with 1 hp motor, but this one will do. And with this being about half the going price for a newer CSX, I can put that money towards some chisels or a shoulder plane. Looks like it’s seen some action, I had to clean a bunch of surface rust from the fence and tables. A thorough cleaning did wonders, and now I need to pull the knives and get them sharpened. Everything seems to work fine, even the bearings are...

Couple annoying setup issues, but all in all... I'm pleased.

Couple annoying setup issues, but all in all... I'm pleased.

It cuts very nicely. Leaves a glass like finish, is quieter cutting than my old 6” Powermatic model 50, the depth of cut lever moves effortlessly, table and fence are flat as a pancake… bonus. I was a little concerned early on with vibration. I had started it before I had the fence assembly on just to be sure the motor/cutterhead alignment was good. The on/off switch post was vibrating considerably, but after the weight of the fence assembly went on it was steady as a rock. I will...

I removed my review because after using this machine, I can’t say that it is even decent quality. I no longer recommend it. I didn’t want people to buy it on my recommendation.Mitch

JET JJP-12HH, 2-month review

JET JJP-12HH, 2-month review

01-21-2011 11:33 PM by mstenner | 17 comments »

After two months with the JJP-12HH, I’m ready to share what I’ve learned. The bottom line: this is a great tool and I’d recommend it for the serious amateur. I wanted a lot of capability in my small (12×15) shop and am very happy. Shipping & Unpacking This is a large and heavy tool (my wife says I’m no longer the “biggest tool in the shop”), and it comes almost fully assembled. You will need to get the crate where it’s going intact. ...

I picked up this jointer earlier this week off of an add that I saw on Craigs List. It is only a couple of years old and I bought it for only $125.00. I haven’t had much time to work with it and it is my first power jointer, but so far I am very pleased with it. The adjustments are pretty simple and easy to figure out (I have the manual, but haven’t even looked at it yet). I took a piece of wood that I had salvaged from a pallet and jointed one side and then squared an adjacen...
