I am writing my review in order to help people with their decision on a purchase of this unit. Before I begin I had some reservations about this and was unsure about making this investment, Even though it is an economical unit, 350 to 400 bucks is a lot to throw away on a piece of garbage that doesn;t work correctly Anyways I am more than pleased with this purchase. I never give 5 stars because when we write these posts we have no way of determining on how long something will last. I may writ...

Part 1, So Far NOT So Good!

Part 1, So Far NOT So Good!

So I recently purchased the Shop Fox W1741 8” Jointer (Grizzly G0490). The machine came packed into 2 separate boxes and arrived with absolutely no damage. I’m going to write this review in a few separate posts as I progress through building, tuning, and operating this particular jointer. First let me start by saying that to my surprise this machine came with the serpentine belt and pulley as opposed to the v-belt on the older version. I was delighted to find this as this...

Hammer A3-31 an updated Review

Hammer A3-31 an updated Review

11-21-2014 11:13 PM by Kopion | 32 comments »

I’m going to start from the beginning: I first contacted Felder/Hammer (just “Felder” from here on out) around spring of 2012, a few months before I was going to go back to school (while still working). Not having a Jointer and Planer was really interfering with my woodworking project list (there’s only so much you can do with plywood and borrowing others’ machines, right?). I spoke with their salesperson and he was pretty quick to provide me with a quote (I o...

Grizzly G0452Z 6” Jointer with Spiral Cutterhead

This is a summary of my experience in purchasing, assembling and using this machine. I began by attempting to place my order on-line, but the choice of lift gate service was not available on the web site. I then called Grizzly and the gentleman who assisted me was going to show me where I missed it. However, I apparently did not miss it, it was not on the web site for this product. The order taker was quite courteous and completed my purchase. I ordered this unit on a Wednesday and was ...

review Oliver 4230 jointer

review Oliver 4230 jointer

I posted a couple of pics of my new Oliver 4230 jointer and have started to tune the machine up and learn all its little secrets for best performance. The jointer has a Shelix spiral cutter head. I looked at a lot of 8” jointers and liked the look and weight of the Oliver at the price point listed. I have not run a lot of stock through it but, so far, the machine is extremely quiet, powerful and cuts like a dream. The bed is 75” long and provides ample space for running long board...

Never again will I trust Grizzly for "Precision" equipment

Never again will I trust Grizzly for "Precision" equipment

I just had the biggest hassle of my life when I got the grizzly 8 inch spiral head dovetail jointer. It took me about three months before I actually got a chance to unpackaged my purchase and then it took me another three days to get all the Schmutz cleaned off of it from the being sent from overseas. I thought to myself boy this is going to be awesome 8 inch helical cutterhead for less than half of the price of a powermatic. Once I finally got the machine set up I put a straight edge on i...

New Oliver 4230 8" Jointer

New Oliver 4230 8" Jointer

Just wanted to post some pictures of new Oliver 4230 jointer I recently set up in basement workshop. I looked at a lot of reviews before pulling tigger on Oliver. Really liked the weight at 655 lbs, long bed and overall look of machine. Took 4 of us to get it around and into to back walk out basement door. My two sons at 6’4 and 6’2 and son in law at 6’5. I helped but but at 63 and 5’9, not so much. Moral support. Removed bed and moved in two stages. The machine comes ...

A Love/Hate Relationship

A Love/Hate Relationship

Ahh spring! That time of year when a young man’s thoughts turn to one thing…and since this is not the forum for that topic…let’s talk tools. Officially, I think this silly little woodworking hobby of mine has morphed into a full blown obsession. In fact, if I ever sell my home, the listing will probably read “Beautiful, three bedroom, two bath home with a Five-tool garage”. While I haven’t reached the absolute low of selling myself for money to feed my tool addiction, I have taken the ...

Craftsman 4-1/8" Bench Top Jointer/Planer Set UP

Craftsman 4-1/8" Bench Top Jointer/Planer Set UP

02-28-2014 07:55 PM by ca8920 | 5 comments »

I have a garage shop and a limited amount of space. I needed a jointer/planer for some upcoming projects so I chose the Craftsman 4-18” Bench Top Jointer/Planer. Not the best tool out there but not the worst. The little jointer works well and does a decent job once set up and shimmed. My complaint, the setup. While researching this tool I found multiple comments/complaints that the fence is too far from the blades, causing a small protrusion of wood on the work piece when you r...
