Baileigh Jointer/Planer Review

Baileigh Jointer/Planer Review

05-07-2013 08:05 AM by Tsmutz | 12 comments »

Hi guys. I recently bought a Baileigh JP-1686. Since they’re pretty new to the woodworking market, I thought I’d give you a review of this jointer/planer combo machine. For context, I build furniture professionally in Southern California. Most of my work involves wood and metal so my shop is a mix of woodworking and metalworking machines. The Baileigh JP-1686 stood out to me for a couple reasons: my shop is modestly sized so the jointer/planer combo takes up less real estate than 2 separat...

Powermatic 54A 6” Jointer

Powermatic 54A 6” Jointer

Jointer Overview: I decided to purchase a jointer for my home workshop. I did a LOT of online research and talked to as many local folks as I could trying to make sure I made the best purchase. I considered the value of Gizzly, the somewhat less expensive Jet models available, looked for quality OLD jointers to restore, plus a dozen more possibilities. I wanted an 8” model but couldn’t quite swing it. In the end it came down to a four-day 15% off sale on Jet and Powermatic at my local Wood...

A Love/Hate Relationship

A Love/Hate Relationship

Ahh spring! That time of year when a young man’s thoughts turn to one thing…and since this is not the forum for that topic…let’s talk tools. Officially, I think this silly little woodworking hobby of mine has morphed into a full blown obsession. In fact, if I ever sell my home, the listing will probably read “Beautiful, three bedroom, two bath home with a Five-tool garage”. While I haven’t reached the absolute low of selling myself for money to feed my tool addiction, I have taken the ...

Grizzly G0490X 8" Jointer with spiral cutter head

Grizzly G0490X 8" Jointer with spiral cutter head

My new machine arrived nicely packaged. No complaints about missing parts or damage. Was actually not too heavy to move into the basement with the help of two friends. Assembly took a little while – the harder part being aligning and tightening the belt. In fact, I think my belt is still too loose, as at start-up and shut-down the machine makes a bit more noise than I’ve read others with the same machine were able to achieve. Fit and finish on the machine is adequate- on the pa...

Another Jet 10" jointer/planer combo review

Another Jet 10" jointer/planer combo review

02-08-2012 12:35 AM by Eric | 11 comments »

Having a large hunk of white oak cut up roughly (chainsaw!) and dried, and beaten up by taking a good hour on one piece jointing with hand planes, I finally took the plunge with the Jet 10” combo. I have a small non-garage shop, so both space and charge card were important! Since others have reviewed the machine here and on other sites, I just want to add my thoughts if you are considering the purchase.First, as others have said, set up is a snap, tables well-enough co-planer out of t...

Grizzly G0609X 12" Jointer

Grizzly G0609X 12" Jointer

It was time to upgrade my 6” Delta jointer, which has served me well for 4 years. I was planning to go with an 8” but decided to go ahead and get the 12”. This is my first Grizzly tool and so far it seems to be worth the money spent. A1Jim done a good review on this jointer so I am not going to rehash the same info. I will go over a few issues I had with mine. - Fit and finish is good, not great. It’s heavy, it’s quite, hey it’s a bear.- The table faces and the fence face were very nice...

This is why I trust Delta machinery :) I hope I am not coming off as a brand snob but this jointer is over 36 years old, AND STILL RUNNING ON THE ORIGINAL KNIVES TO BOOT!!!!!! I picked this up this spring from a guy at work who was getting rid of his shop and moving into a condo for $100 and with only the cord needing replaced from dry rot and rust from being in the basement it performs like it did coming out of the box :) Adding to this Parts are still available along with the Owners manual ...

review Oliver 4230 jointer

review Oliver 4230 jointer

07-10-2014 02:57 PM by bons | 11 comments »

I posted a couple of pics of my new Oliver 4230 jointer and have started to tune the machine up and learn all its little secrets for best performance. The jointer has a Shelix spiral cutter head. I looked at a lot of 8” jointers and liked the look and weight of the Oliver at the price point listed. I have not run a lot of stock through it but, so far, the machine is extremely quiet, powerful and cuts like a dream. The bed is 75” long and provides ample space for running long board...

Review help needed !

We are interested in demonstrating, and letting folks use a new mortise and dowel hole jig, for response and interest to help with how well it will be received in the market place, within 300 miles of Austin / San Antonio TX, or more if necessary ?? Anyone interested ? There are no wood shows to go to, to demonstrate this jig, so we are looking for individuals, a wood working club, or group of woodworkers to demonstrate it to, and let them use, for feed back. No cost or obligation. If you ...

Grizzly Branded Byrd Shelix Cutter Head for the G0452P

Grizzly Branded Byrd Shelix Cutter Head for the G0452P

I got some tiny nic’s in the blades on my Grizzly G0452 Jointer and figured with these being on sale (4/2016) at Grizzly, why not avoid the hassle of the getting new knives and having to get them set correctly and all that trouble again. It arrives packaged as seen, in great shape, and I’d be very impressed if the shippers were able to damage this in shipping. Installation was a little tough – pulling the bearings off the old jointer head required a pulley puller/extracto...
