Great Mortiser

Great Mortiser

Got this Jointer Monday from Woodcraft, first impressions out of the box was great paint was crisp, not a lot of machine oil or packing grease Just enough to keep the rust off. Assembly took less than an 1/2 hour and the instructions were clear and concise, the mortiser came with all four chisels from 1/4” to 1/2” however I probably upgrade to lee Valley chisels (personal preference) Although the chisels out of the box are sharp and square I would recommend purchasing the diamon...

The keeper

Hi guys, I’ve just bought this machine and some 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1” chisels and bits. I have to say that it does an excellent job. Also, is not heavy. I’ve put it in a Powermatic mobile base for Bandsaws, and it rides great. It’s tilt table and all the little features in it makes it easy to work with on all kind of different projects. Would I recommend this machine to you guys?. I would say yes!.

Rockler Mortise Machine Table And Fence

Rockler Mortise Machine Table And Fence

1663 days ago by TheDane | 2 comments »

This table/fence solved a lot of problems, and really improved the performance of my Jet JBM-5 Mortising Machine. It provides a much larger work surface than the stock table, and comes with 2 of Rockler’s Rotary Guides that help secure the workpiece against the fence, but allow movements to the right or left so you can slide the workpiece as needed. I made one small modification when I installed the fence. I have never trusted wood screws in MDF for this type of fixture, so instea...

Jet JBM-5 Bench Mortising Machine

Jet JBM-5 Bench Mortising Machine

I have been using my JBM-5 for over 3 years now, and consider it a good investment for my home workshop. I haven’t kept track of the number of mortises I have done with it, but just about everything I build uses mortise and tenon joinery. The JBM-5 fence can be a pain to set. The fence is attached to a steel hex rod that is held in place by a thumb screw. There is no rack & pinion fence adjustment (like the one on Delta’s mortiser), so getting the workpiece positioned corre...

Powermatic Benchtop Mortiser, Model PM701

Powermatic Benchtop Mortiser, Model PM701

As many of you know, I have had a heck of a time getting a new benchtop mortiser lately. I had a Steel City Mortiser that I loved….and so did my dad. So I ordered him one from Woodcraft for fathers day, after several weeks of no mortiser, I finally got a e-mail from Woodcraft saying that Steel-city had missed three shipping dates and that the did not know when or even IF they would ever get them in. So they offered me a choice…get a full refund on what I paid ($269 on sale) or the...

I used this mortiser at my friends house today and it was sweet i am just used to putting a drill bit in the drill press and finishing it off with a rasp but this was awesome but its also a ton of money but its still really nice. Powermatic makes a floor standing model too but this is good enough to make good mortises.

Hartville Tool Mortise Chisels and Bits

Hartville Tool Mortise Chisels and Bits

2009 days ago by Matt (Upper Cut) | 4 comments »

I recently ordered the set for my new Jet JFM-5. I am very disappointed and will be buying a higher quality bit set. I’ll keep these cheaper chisels for rough work. I’m sure they won’t last long. You can find the link to the set here. Pros:1. Cheap Cons:1. This is a short set. This means that you’ll have to add your arbor extension to your mortiser.2. Not sharp, so you’ll have to sharpen them.3. Not ground to standard angle. I used the Lee Valley hones. A...

Jet JFM-5 Initial Assemble and Use Review

Jet JFM-5 Initial Assemble and Use Review

Like many others I recently purchased the Jet floor mortiser from CPO for 499-150 in Jet Rebates, so first off it was a fantastic deal that drove me to the tool. The tool was drop shipped directly from Jet. The tool arrived in two boxes that were on a pallat and shrink wrapped with little to no damage more than a small knick on the cardboard, so A+ to Jet and the freight company for packing and shipping. One box contains the stand and weighs in the 40 lbs neighborhood, then comes the oth...

Sharpen your mortise chisels

Sharpen your mortise chisels

2325 days ago by Karson | 15 comments »

Rockler and others have this tool to sharpen your mortise chisels. Trust me they don’t come sharpl Lee Vally has just the sharpening cones for $7.95 a better buy than Rockler. It’s a cone with diamond sharpening grits on the edge. The picture doesn’t show but it does come with 2 grit sizes, course and fine. I placed the diamond cone in my drill press and lightly brought it into the inside of the mortise chisel Ligntly do that until you get all edges of the chisel sharp...
