Powermatic Benchtop Mortiser, Model PM701

Powermatic Benchtop Mortiser, Model PM701

As many of you know, I have had a heck of a time getting a new benchtop mortiser lately. I had a Steel City Mortiser that I loved….and so did my dad. So I ordered him one from Woodcraft for fathers day, after several weeks of no mortiser, I finally got a e-mail from Woodcraft saying that Steel-city had missed three shipping dates and that the did not know when or even IF they would ever get them in. So they offered me a choice…get a full refund on what I paid ($269 on sale) or the...

Bought the Steel City Mortiser today on the way home from work. link to tool store Mueller Assembly, no problems … intuitive design Came with 4 bits and chisels. Black and white, printed boxes exactlly the same as came with my old Delta. Pros: Fence looks real good. Nice design. Fine adjustment knob is a plus. Worked good.Big table base , easy to fasten to work bench. Very stable.Pull out, cast iron table extensions go to about 36 inches. Solid fit.I thought the $289 price was ...

Shop Fox W1671 3/4 HP Heavy-duty Mortising Machine

Shop Fox W1671 3/4 HP Heavy-duty Mortising Machine

Ok, I admit it, I am a tool junkie. What I lack in skill I make up in tool savvy. That said I have never owned a mortise machine so take that into consideration when putting any value to this review. I did do some serious research before buying as this will be my last tool for a while as my wife has threaten to cave my skull in with a cast iron frying pan while I sleep if I buy any more. Let’s get to the heart of the matter; The Shop Fox is inexpensive. I paid $245 + $44 shipping at Grizzly t...

Great Mortiser - Wow, makes square holes!

Great Mortiser - Wow, makes square holes!

1293 days ago by Terry Burks | 12 comments »

After recently completing a project that required creating more than 20 mortises using a drill press and chisels, I decided it was time to seriously consider getting a bench top mortiser. After reading a number of reviews online, I visited my local Woodcraft store and looked at the Jet, Delta and Shop Fox models they had on display. Based on what I saw, discussions with the salesman, features and price, I decided that the Delta was the best they had. I was told that upcoming sales would br...

Cutting a Square Hole is so much easier.

Cutting a Square Hole is so much easier.

Up until now my chosen method for cutting mortises has been a router and I’ve become very tired of having to spend a good amount of time square up each one with a chisel. I bought this after seeing on Woodcraft’s site that it was on sale for $249.00 until the end of the month. This looks very similar to the Steel City, it might infact be the same just different branding. The unit comes in roughly 2’X2’X2’ box and has 2 styrofoam trays, it weighs about 90 pou...

General Machine - 75-050T M1 - Tilting Bench top Mortiser

General Machine - 75-050T M1 - Tilting Bench top Mortiser

Picked this up today at Federated Tool in London, OntarioIt is the General Machine 75-050T1 – Tilting head mortiser. I brought it home and unpacked it. There was a small amount of oil, not pounds of grease to deal with. I had the entire unit wiped down in less than 10 minutes. There were no parts missing, and it was 80% assembled in the box. Instructions were not too bad, there was not much to do. The fence is dead straight and required no shimming. The unit came with 4 chisels, 1/4&...

Jet JBM-5 Bench Mortising Machine

Jet JBM-5 Bench Mortising Machine

1702 days ago by TheDane | 8 comments »

I have been using my JBM-5 for over 3 years now, and consider it a good investment for my home workshop. I haven’t kept track of the number of mortises I have done with it, but just about everything I build uses mortise and tenon joinery. The JBM-5 fence can be a pain to set. The fence is attached to a steel hex rod that is held in place by a thumb screw. There is no rack & pinion fence adjustment (like the one on Delta’s mortiser), so getting the workpiece positioned corre...

After doing some research found this one I looked over the specs and bought it..It has many of the features I wanted. Great tool. Assy went easy, all parts lined up easily a well machined. Comes with 4 chisels and allen wrench, chuck key. Works well has a wide base of 15.5 in with pull out work piece supports that go to 36 in w. I have used a jet before and this works much better. It has a tool holder in back that will hold 4 chisels and chuck key. Rubber rollers hold stock in plac...

Hartville Tool Mortise Chisels and Bits

Hartville Tool Mortise Chisels and Bits

2048 days ago by Matt (Upper Cut) | 4 comments »

I recently ordered the set for my new Jet JFM-5. I am very disappointed and will be buying a higher quality bit set. I’ll keep these cheaper chisels for rough work. I’m sure they won’t last long. You can find the link to the set here. Pros:1. Cheap Cons:1. This is a short set. This means that you’ll have to add your arbor extension to your mortiser.2. Not sharp, so you’ll have to sharpen them.3. Not ground to standard angle. I used the Lee Valley hones. A...

Sharpen your mortise chisels

Sharpen your mortise chisels

2364 days ago by Karson | 15 comments »

Rockler and others have this tool to sharpen your mortise chisels. Trust me they don’t come sharpl Lee Vally has just the sharpening cones for $7.95 a better buy than Rockler. It’s a cone with diamond sharpening grits on the edge. The picture doesn’t show but it does come with 2 grit sizes, course and fine. I placed the diamond cone in my drill press and lightly brought it into the inside of the mortise chisel Ligntly do that until you get all edges of the chisel sharp...
