Bought the Steel City Mortiser today on the way home from work. link to tool store Mueller Assembly, no problems … intuitive design Came with 4 bits and chisels. Black and white, printed boxes exactlly the same as came with my old Delta. Pros: Fence looks real good. Nice design. Fine adjustment knob is a plus. The bottom line: This machine works, but you must watch out for several things, common to all mortisers of this type, as I already have pointed out on my recent blog posts. The weak link: The fence. It recently gave me many headaches, as the inside edges of the fence halves did not align properly – in the photo, Edge #1 and Edge #2. I recently ordered the set for my new Jet JFM-5. I am very disappointed and will be buying a higher quality bit set. I’ll keep these cheaper chisels for rough work. I’m sure they won’t last long. Rockler and others have this tool to sharpen your mortise chisels. Trust me they don’t come sharpl Lee Vally has just the sharpening cones for $7.95 a better buy than Rockler. It’s a cone with diamond sharpening grits on the edge. The picture doesn’t show but it does come with 2 grit sizes, course and fine. I had been looking at this mortiser for sale by Wilke Tools in PA. It was being sold at $245 plus shipping. And then one time I went looking again and they had it for sale at $185.00 I ordered it. It didn’t come with any chisels. What sets this mortiser apart from others for a reasonable price is that it has an X, Y and Z alignment. Like many others I recently purchased the Jet floor mortiser from CPO for 499-150 in Jet Rebates, so first off it was a fantastic deal that drove me to the tool. The tool was drop shipped directly from Jet. The tool arrived in two boxes that were on a pallat and shrink wrapped with little to no damage more than a small knick on the cardboard, so A+ to Jet and the freight company for packing and shipping. I used this mortiser at my friends house today and it was sweet i am just used to putting a drill bit in the drill press and finishing it off with a rasp but this was awesome but its also a ton of money but its still really nice. Powermatic makes a floor standing model too but this is good enough to make good mortises.

As many of you know, I have had a heck of a time getting a new benchtop mortiser lately. I had a Steel City Mortiser that I loved….and so did my dad. So I ordered him one from Woodcraft for fathers day, after several weeks of no mortiser, I finally got a e-mail from Woodcraft saying that Steel-city had missed three shipping dates and that the did not know when or even IF they would ever get them in. I purchased this machine after reading a lot of top reviews. My inital take on the machine was it is pretty well made. However, when I went to set it up, the instructions were very lacking…there were several steps missing, and they did not even address how to attach the upper work hold down clamp.
