Stanley Fat Max 15" handsaw - Fantastic!

Stanley Fat Max 15" handsaw - Fantastic!

I just received this saw, tried it out, and it cuts like a DREAM! Easy start… cuts…. Very study blade… stays nice and straight. Very comfortable hardwood handle with a nice rubber hand-hold. Super Nice! One nice thing I just noticed, that I didn’t think was going to be there, the Handle-to-Blade at top is 90 so you can use it to draw a straight 90 line like a T Square. At the bottom Handle-to-Blade is 45 so one can draw a 45 like a T Square. I love it...

I wanted handsaw sharpening experience, and I got more (sharpening experience) than I expected

I wanted handsaw sharpening experience, and I got more (sharpening experience) than I expected

This past summer, I had to repair some molding along the exterior of a bay window. Given that it was a very small number of molding cuts to repair, I opted to get a plastic miter box and backsaw to do the work rather than pull out a power miter saw. I saw it not so much as an additional expense, but rather a chance to get some handsaw sharpening experience. My criteria was to find a cheap handsaw that I wouldn’t feel bad ruining by experimenting with sharpening. After playing with a few...

A really nice saw and great value, good way to get into pull saws

A really nice saw and great value, good way to get into pull saws

After watching with great interest the enthusiasm out there for Japanese pull saws I decided I’d like to try one. But I was quickly overwhelmed by the variety, terminology and prices. The Shark saws looked interesting, but I was turned off by the plastic handles and thought they would be a disappointment….... boy was I wrong. When given an Amazon gift card back in 2012, I saw I had two Shark saws in my wish list and came back to the idea. For the low price, I figured I co...

High Value

High Value

121 days ago by Mark Davisson | 11 comments »

I bought this saw a couple of years ago. It was a $6 (+/-) purchase. I bought it not expecting I would use it nearly as much as I have. I’ve used it on all types of wood – rip as well as cross-cut. It has performed extremely well. I recently found myself in a situation where I needed to make some cuts in concrete backer board, and this saw was the only thing in my toolbox that could do it. And the saw performed beautifully but, I have to say, the cuts trashed the teeth....

Knew Concepts 8" Fret Saw - Great for Dovetailing

Knew Concepts 8" Fret Saw - Great for Dovetailing

Rating: 4 out of 5 Bottom Line: Very good fret saw offers an extremely high degree of control which saves time when it comes to fine woodworking tasks. Comes up short when it comes to material selection for the handle. Otherwise generally positive but not a necessity in the workshop given the price. Pros: -Lightweight and extremely maneuverable.-Tightening the saw blade very easy thanks to a micro-adjuster and cam locking mechanism.-Saw blade can be swiveled to a preset +45 degre...

Pretty good for the price!

Pretty good for the price!

So I was tired of my crappy U-frame saw, made of steel tubing, having hacked it as much as I could to improve – that’s a lesser word – the blade locking mechanism. It kept twisting blades on me and they snapped too easily. So I litterally tossed it out and settled to raid eBay, in search for a better saw frame. I had already purchased several times from the Proops Bros, and had noticed they carried a wide array of hardware, all made by themselves in the UK. And so I shell...

Knew Concepts 5" Birdcage Titanium Fret Saw - What a great saw!!!

Knew Concepts 5" Birdcage Titanium Fret Saw - What a great saw!!!

Cutting dovetails by hand has its moments of tedium. Getting rid of the bulk of the waste from the pins and tails is one of them. So, I always try to find a way to speed that up. Enter the small saws… First, I tried a coping saw. It was a hand-me-down, and I’ll never discard it because of whom, not what, it represented. But, the simple truth is that it was horrible at removing bulk waste from dovetails. After the coping saw, I stepped up to an Olson adjustable frame saw. ...

I have a pair of 14” tennon saws 11ppi rip and 13 xcut with walnut handles and they are well built saws the quality is second to none I have a dovetail saw by wenzloff and I think the fit and finish is a little better the brass backs are very heavy with the saw blades being a mirror Finnish. Enough about how they look how do they perform. I have had them for 4 days and have made about 40 -50 cuts and the saws track very good I am still new to sawing by hand and I can make a cut perfe...
