Cuts Like a Dream

For those of you who don’t know, LJ Wally331 is currently a senior in high school. He also happens to be rather skilled at making hand saws. I commissioned Chris to make me a 10”, 14 TPI dovetail saw. It has a brass back, hand-shaped African bloodwood handle, and hand-filed teeth. The saw’s split nuts are hand made as well. To put it simply, this saw cuts wonderfully. I had no problem sawing parallel lines down a piece of scrap pine and walnut, and the saw rode bea...

Great Saw for dovetails

Great Saw for dovetails

07-29-2014 12:27 AM by mramseyISU | 4 comments »

I picked this saw up a couple weeks back to try my hand at hand cutting dovetails after losing 4 teeth out of a Japanese style saw on one drawer. I’d read that the Japanese saws aren’t as good on harder woods like white oak which is what I mostly use, wish I would have read that before I bought the thing but other than that it’s a nice saw and I’ll keep it around I think. Back to the review at hand though. I started the process of laying out dovetails on 4 drawers and ...

Great, and inexpensive

Great, and inexpensive

Bought this saw for $30 about 6 months ago. It is great. Cuts super fast in all types of wood often without tear out and is very easy to use. I use it for both crosscuts and rip cuts and it produces fine results in both. The blade is solid and tight in the handle. The handle is a little cheap – it’s basically just a dowel but for $30 bucks I wouldn’t expect much more. This saw is great. To be honest I much prefer this over the Veritas rip carcass saw I got for more than doub...

Stanley Fat Max 15" handsaw - Fantastic!

Stanley Fat Max 15" handsaw - Fantastic!

I just received this saw, tried it out, and it cuts like a DREAM! Easy start… cuts…. Very study blade… stays nice and straight. Very comfortable hardwood handle with a nice rubber hand-hold. Super Nice! One nice thing I just noticed, that I didn’t think was going to be there, the Handle-to-Blade at top is 90 so you can use it to draw a straight 90 line like a T Square. At the bottom Handle-to-Blade is 45 so one can draw a 45 like a T Square. I love it...

I wanted handsaw sharpening experience, and I got more (sharpening experience) than I expected

I wanted handsaw sharpening experience, and I got more (sharpening experience) than I expected

This past summer, I had to repair some molding along the exterior of a bay window. Given that it was a very small number of molding cuts to repair, I opted to get a plastic miter box and backsaw to do the work rather than pull out a power miter saw. I saw it not so much as an additional expense, but rather a chance to get some handsaw sharpening experience. My criteria was to find a cheap handsaw that I wouldn’t feel bad ruining by experimenting with sharpening. After playing with a few...

A really nice saw and great value, good way to get into pull saws

A really nice saw and great value, good way to get into pull saws

01-22-2014 04:30 PM by Mainiac Matt | 10 comments »

After watching with great interest the enthusiasm out there for Japanese pull saws I decided I’d like to try one. But I was quickly overwhelmed by the variety, terminology and prices. The Shark saws looked interesting, but I was turned off by the plastic handles and thought they would be a disappointment….... boy was I wrong. When given an Amazon gift card back in 2012, I saw I had two Shark saws in my wish list and came back to the idea. For the low price, I figured I co...

High Value

High Value

12-17-2013 04:29 PM by Mark Davisson | 11 comments »

I bought this saw a couple of years ago. It was a $6 (+/-) purchase. I bought it not expecting I would use it nearly as much as I have. I’ve used it on all types of wood – rip as well as cross-cut. It has performed extremely well. I recently found myself in a situation where I needed to make some cuts in concrete backer board, and this saw was the only thing in my toolbox that could do it. And the saw performed beautifully but, I have to say, the cuts trashed the teeth....

Knew Concepts 8" Fret Saw - Great for Dovetailing

Knew Concepts 8" Fret Saw - Great for Dovetailing

07-02-2013 01:04 PM by MoKC | 8 comments »

Rating: 4 out of 5 Bottom Line: Very good fret saw offers an extremely high degree of control which saves time when it comes to fine woodworking tasks. Comes up short when it comes to material selection for the handle. Otherwise generally positive but not a necessity in the workshop given the price. Pros: -Lightweight and extremely maneuverable.-Tightening the saw blade very easy thanks to a micro-adjuster and cam locking mechanism.-Saw blade can be swiveled to a preset +45 degre...
