Wood River - Banana Planes

Wood River - Banana Planes

1591 days ago by mcase | 20 comments »

I recently spent about an hour and half in Woodcraft examining Wood River planes. I went there to buy these planes. I went to purchase a #4, #5, and #6. The planes are very handsome and clearly copies of the Lie-Nielsen planes once carried at Woodcraft. They are very attractively packaged in nice wooden boxes. But before I went out the door I had the sales person (very helpful) open each box. I did this so I could examine each plane before I brought it home. Using a machinist ...

IBC Pinnacle A2 Cryo #4 (2") Plane Blade

IBC Pinnacle A2 Cryo #4 (2") Plane Blade

After having the blade in my new #4 Footprint wear down more quickly than I would have liked, I figured I should get a good blade to try and extend my time working with wood rather than sharpening gizmos. There has been some discussion in the forum and in other reviews of the Pinnacle line of blades from Woodcraft, so I figured I would give one a try. Long story short, the Pinnacle blade is fantastic. The thickness difference between this blade and a stock cheap blade is huge, which requ...

What a difference !

What a difference !

Last week I received by mail the set of three Footprint planes I bought from Sears on the Internet. I bought them because the price was right and it seemed to be a good value. IN the last month or so I spent countless hour son the Internet reading about hand planes; what the different planes are and what are their respective use, how to tune and how to use them. Of course I have used hand planes before but I really never paid attention to them, I just used them. Lately I found out that they a...

New No 93, rabbet, chisel plane

New No 93, rabbet, chisel plane

1607 days ago by Andrew | 6 comments »

This is my first good plane, in fact it cost more than my 3 other planes all together. I needed a plane that could get into corners, and trim along edges. I wanted to get the 92 it had a 3/4” width as opposed to the 93 with a 1” width, but the 92 was on back order until mid april. My needs are my needs so here goes the 93. It took only a couple of minutes to flatten the back of the iron and hone the edge. The bottom seems pretty flat. After a couple minutes of set up and ad...

A decent plane, but it takes some work to get there!

A decent plane, but it takes some work to get there!

Quick recommendation: Only buy this if it is between this and a cheap Stanley. I saw this plane on sale for $25 at Sears, and had to pick it up. When I first got it out of the box, the handle was a little lose, but a quick turn of a screwdriver fixed that issue pretty quickly. Unfortunately, that was the only “quick” fix. The sole of the plane is nowhere near flat, and the deep scratches on the body are a royal pain to work out. I spent a bunch of time trying to “g...

Lightly rusty rabbet block plane

Lightly rusty rabbet block plane

I know what some (or all!) of you must be thinking. Only 4 stars!Well, I got this plane as a Christmas gift from my aunt and I was really excited because I couldn’t believe she gave me such a nice and expensive gift.I opened it and saw right away that there seemed to be a light coat of rust on the plane. It was especially noticeable on the sole. (See picture) I realized that whoever packaged the plane must have forgot to coat the plane with oil. The frog was oiled but not the rest o...

Well i wonder if you guys can guess what i got for Christmas!!! :) I’ve got a few planes, you know the regular an old stanley some Veritas Bevel up planes, and a Lie-Nielsen block plane but out of them all this has got to be one of my favorites!!!!!! First off you would be surprised how much a rabbeting block plane would come in handy. I don’t have a shoulder plane but even if i did i couldn’t see liking it more than this. I can get a full 1 3/4” width of cut which ...

Quality plane for years to come.

Quality plane for years to come.

1674 days ago by Rick | 4 comments »

In my book Veritas builds high quality planes with a dash of new and innovative thinking for a reasonable price. It’s not a cheap price but if you’re looking to be happy with a plane in every way, then this is the first brand in the price range. In my opinion. I use this plane for everything except for smoothing a wide board. This will handle end grain and even the side grain of birds eye maple. However, you need to get your plane iron sharp. I suggest the A2 steel. You s...

Cheap, but Workable

Cheap, but Workable

1746 days ago by Jimi_C | 14 comments »

At $22.95, this plane is dirt cheap, and as such I was fully expecting to have to do some work on it in order to get it into usable condition. The only other plane I have is a Stanley SB4, which is apparently a British version of the #4 (weird that I got it at Lowes a couple of years ago). That plane is shown in the second picture I attached to the review, and it should be evident what the major issue with that plane is – the two screws that control depth of cut. Rather than having a...

Excellent low cost Hand planes

Excellent low cost Hand planes

1753 days ago by Tony | 13 comments »

I have just completed this review on a Chinese imported hand plane. This hand plane looks remarkably like the WoodRiver Hand planes supplied by WoodCraft, so I thought that you might like to read the review I wrote about a similar hand plane over here in Finland. The report is in pdf format which you can down load it if you wish to read the full report. Summary: A well engineered hand plane, which has a positive feel to it as soon as you pick it up. The weight of the plane is a definit...
