Believe the Hype...

Ok, I took the plunge, my two previous block planes were annoying me. On the Irwin 60 1/2 low angle, the blade just kept moving no matter what I did,and the adjustable throat was always out of square since I got it. The Stanley 9 1/2 was Ok but the throat is huge and it can tear out even a gentle wave in the grain, also fairly pointless on end grain. I read all sorts of block plane tests online and in magazines, the conclusion seemed to be that the Veritas or Lie Nielsen planes were both v...

A fun joinery plane

A fun joinery plane

1847 days ago by johnjoiner | 14 comments »

First off, I’ll point out that I have nothing to compare this to. I have never used any other plow plane, and have little experience with any other kinds of joinery planes. This is easy and fun to use. No tools are needed to do anything on this. Blade removal and all adjustments are toolless. The only thing I can think of to complain about is access to some of the knobs. I’d say I have average sized hands and fairly dexterous fingers. But I had trouble getting at the knob...

Groz Hand Planes

Groz Hand Planes

780 days ago by WhiskeyWaters | 14 comments »

A cross-pollinated review from my “other” blog – www.woodshopcowboy.com In the woodshop today, I spent some quality time with a set of 3 Groz planes. The block plane (unsure what the Stanley No would be), the Jack Plane and their Jointer. I’ve been pleased with the results throughout this year. I sharpen the blades about once a quarter or during long breaks, and when they see an enormous amount of use. Here’s a shot of the block plane at work today: Groz plan...

Hock Plane Iron

Hock Plane Iron

My latest project was constructing a wooden hand plane / smoother type. The blade that I ordered came from Hock a company out of Ft. Bragg California. This company has been in business since 1982 and makes a vary of blade for all your hand plane needs along with carving knives and such. This is the first time I’ve purchase any of there wares. I order two blade at a cost of 52.00 a piece which seem to be expensive but the rep. on these blade are that they last and hold a very sharp ed...

Cheap, but Workable

Cheap, but Workable

1317 days ago by Jimi_C | 14 comments »

At $22.95, this plane is dirt cheap, and as such I was fully expecting to have to do some work on it in order to get it into usable condition. The only other plane I have is a Stanley SB4, which is apparently a British version of the #4 (weird that I got it at Lowes a couple of years ago). That plane is shown in the second picture I attached to the review, and it should be evident what the major issue with that plane is – the two screws that control depth of cut. Rather than having a...

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

Veritas Small Scraping Plane

205 days ago by vipond33 | 14 comments »

There are things you can do with a scraper that would defeat even the finest of hand planes. The micro geometry of their cut produces a Type II shaving, yielding a perfect surface even going fully against interlocked grain or over knots. I use a variety of scrapers and for spot work nothing beats a card type or even an ordinary paint scraper. One problem with these types is that they will follow any undulations on the existing surface as they have no registration (sole). For larger wor...

Nice Ash Smoother

Nice Ash Smoother

31 days ago by Don W | 14 comments »

I offered to do a review on the Nice Ash plane. Wood planes always intrigued me. I’ve restored a lot of them. They are stuck in corners, on shelves and above cabinets all over my house and shop. With a few exception, everyone has been made to work. The only ones I typically use though are a couple I made myself, but I normally use metal planes. I gave this a 3 and would have gone to 3.5 if I could. I believe part of the reason for the lower score is this plane is one of the first 25 ...

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane

Veritas Large Shoulder Plane

1944 days ago by TheGravedigger | 13 comments »

Every now and then you stumble upon a tool that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it. For me, that was the shoulder plane. My present workbench base project was going to require 28 large mortise and tenon joints, and practice joints showed me that fitting was going to be difficult. I had tried a combination of block plane and chisel to clean up the tenon cheeks and shoulders, but the intersection of the shoulder and cheek kept causing me problems. The shoulder plane seemed like the...

Veritas Router Plane

Veritas Router Plane

811 days ago by HighRockWoodworking | 13 comments »

My wife recently surprised me with a Veritas Router Plane and Router Plane Fence. She knows that I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to new tools. I have always wanted a router plane but only had one occasion to even use one, it was a class that Marc Spagnuolo (The Wood Whisperer) was giving at the Highland Hardware Store here in Atlanta. I loved the tool and immediately thought of a thousand used for it but only added it to my wish list. My wife always keeps a few tool mag...

Veritas Router Plane

Veritas Router Plane

105 days ago by dbray45 | 13 comments »

I bought this a while ago but have been too busy to sit down and use it. For my last project I had to make a couple of grooves for a shelf and decided that this was a good time to give this a try. To start, I marked out where I wanted the groove to be on a piece of scrap, cut the marks a little deeper with a bench chisel to establish the groove and reduce the possible tear out before it happened. Using the adjustment, I took very little off on each pass. This thing worked like a dream. ...
