Ryobi BG828G 8" Bench Grinder

Ryobi BG828G 8" Bench Grinder

As with all Ryobi products, you pretty much have to start the review with “good tool, for the money.” 3 amp motor which was plenty strong for sharpening chisels, lathe tools etc. No slowdown whatsoever, which I was worried about since I’m used to using my dad’s 6 amp Delta grinder. That said, long windup, takes maybe 30 seconds to get to full speed? Slower than a 6 amp, but that’s about all I noticed when it comes to the less powerful motor. That said, if you ...

Tormek DBS-22 drill sharpening attachment

Tormek DBS-22 drill sharpening attachment

I’ve had a problem with blowout when drilling wood. It didn’t seem to matter what point was on the twist drill, or how sharp it was, it pulled up small splinters when entering and no matter how slow the feed or how good the back up was, there was blowout on the back. I had invested in several sets of bits including some pricey brad points with spurs from Germany, but the problem persisted in one form or another. It was especially bad if I got in a hurry and didn’t take sp...

A little rough around the edges but a great tool

A little rough around the edges but a great tool

I must start this of by saying that I really would like to give this 4.5 stars but that’s not available here. I set this up on my old grinder and this week I bought a new Rikon grinder from Woodcraft so I mounted that to my base. It does take some time to set these bases up but it’s not hard at all. The two tool rests are made from heavy welded steel and the two bases are an extruded aluminum and is nothing if not stout. The only issue that I had with it is the flat grinding rest,...

Rikon 8" low speed bench grinder

Rikon 8" low speed bench grinder

I bought this two days ago from Woodcraft as a replacement for the WoodRiver grinder that had so many problems that Woodcraft stopped carrying it. I just got it taken out of the box and plugged it in and it wouldn’t start. The right wheel contacted the wheel guard and stopped cold. I noticed how the guard was pushed over sideways so far that I couldn’t even turn the wheel past it by hand. I bent it back toward center a bit but it still rubs the wheel. But at least I could turn it ...

Grizzly Wet Grinder

Wanted to do a quick review of the grizzly 10 inch wet grinder. I got the anniversary edition about a month ago, and have been very pleased with the results. Pros:Grinds, hones, and polishes wellVery happy with the polishing leather wheelVery good and repeatable results Cons:Jig is hard to square up, but is still useable Cannot flatten or polish blade backs unlike the tormek.Angle jig can be confusing at firstCould be better at catching water off wheel sides Overall, I would recommen...

Chicagoe Electric Flex Shaft Carver

Chicagoe Electric Flex Shaft Carver

I am not a carver but sometimes a project requires some carving or shaping and I have been doing it with a Dremel 4000. Well last week that thing got real hot when using a 3/4” shaping tool that I decided I needed one of those flex shaft carvers with a small stylus in my hand instead of the big Dremel. I think this job killed the Dremel because it does not wind up to top speed any more. So I looked at Wecheer carvers at $204 and 1/6 hp and Foredom’s at around $400 and I decide...

Powertec + Wolverine FTW

Powertec + Wolverine FTW

I just received and setup my new Powertec slow speed grinder. It’s a 1/2 hp grinder that spins at 1725RPM. It comes with both 60grit and 120grit white aluminum oxide wheels (i may replace the 120grit wheel with a 60grit Norton). Total cost from Amazon was $92.09 shipped ($69.99 + $22.10 shipping). While the grinder is an import from China, It’s surprising pleasantly to use. I’m using a cast iron stand i purchased from Harbor Freight. The Powertec is replacing a Harbor Fre...

Quick changes and fast cutting

Quick changes and fast cutting

05-25-2013 04:35 AM by Rick M. | 12 comments »

This last year I’ve been doing more with metals and have been using my Dremel with two types of cut off wheels. One type cuts well but wears quickly, the other type is brittle and prone to exploding. Either way, changing wheels meant removing a screw from the mandrel, replacing the wheel and returning the screw. I spent more time screwing around than cutting. The EZ lock mandrel and wheel starter kit was around $11 and is the bee’s knees for Dremel cutting. Wheel changes only t...

Works like magic!!

Works like magic!!

I have endured years of having a completely unbalanced grinder to sharpen my turning tools. I tried truing the wheel on the front edge and side, putting shims to get rid of the wobble, and adjusting the bushings so the wheel sits dead center. Every attempt to eliminate vibration have failed. I spent countless hours trying to prevent the grinder from literally walking off the table and taking every tool with it while it vibrated. The vibrations were so loud against the table that I was for...

Review of the Porter Cable 8" Grinder

Review of the Porter Cable 8" Grinder

11-10-2012 07:16 PM by thewoodworker01 | 6 comments »

Recently I just bought a grinder for the workshop to sharpen my lathe tools. I looked at other grinders and I could really only find a couple grinders with variable speed. This one has variable speed from 2000-3400 rpms. It is a great grinder. I have heard a lot of other people say that this grinder is junk. It isn’t. I have heard people saying that the motor turned over two times and it died. This hasn’t happened to me; I asked the salesman at Lowe’s if I could test the gri...
