Rudd Lacquer Sprays Well, Nice Satin Finish

Rudd Lacquer Sprays Well, Nice Satin Finish

04-01-2014 05:51 PM by pintodeluxe | 8 comments »

My local paint store quit carrying Valspar Pre-cat lacquer. Their replacement product is Rudd Duracat-V 550 voc pre-cat lacquer. It is billed as a vinyl, non-yellowing lacquer. I had the chance to use it on a recent project, and it compares favorably with Valspar, Sherwin Williams, and Magnalac. This lacquer is milky white in the can, compared to the yellow color of lacquers I have used in the past. I used the satin sheen, which looked like a hand rubbed finish after one coat. I sanded ...

I read about Clapham’s salad bowl finish for turned bowls and started using it on several projects including my last boxes. It goes on fast and dries quickly, give wood a nice glow, food safe.

Not recommended for shellac

Not recommended for shellac

10-11-2012 08:08 AM by Purrmaster | 31 comments »

I got this stuff after I saw that the finishing test counter at Rockler had a bottle of this. I was using shellac for the first time so I got this denatured alcohol instead of the “regular” denatured alcohol. I was hoping it might have a bit less toxicity. After sticking my shellac flakes in (2 oz of shellac) and measuring out 6 ounces of alcohol I let the jar sit overnight. And basically nothing happened. So I shake and stir and it makes no difference. I even put the jar ...

A must have glue accessory

A must have glue accessory

No matter how silly it seems, perhaps one of my absolute favorite tools in my shop is one of the smallest and cheapest. I recently purchased Rocklers silicone glue kit complete with a silicone brush, silicone rake/comb, and a silicone tray. I also purchased separately the silicone dowell applicators. In my opinion, anything that increases my efficiency, reduces cost, and saves materials is something to at least consider. We all use glue on nearly every project, and most of us in the past use...

Major help for garage spray booth

Major help for garage spray booth

12-20-2012 05:36 AM by wwbob | 6 comments »

My garage is my workshop. It is also my spray room. Each time I spray, I need to drape sections of the garage with some form of plastic. I had just about given up spraying due to the hassle dealing with the 9×12 plastic sheets, then I discovered 3M Advanced Masking Film. The film comes in a roll about 12.5 inches tall. You tape the film up without unfolding it. Once the 12.5 inch wide film is taped up, you pull down on the back of the film and the it unfolds to a full 99 inches. I...

Best I've used

Best I've used

I just saw this review, and I completely agree – it’s the best I’ve used. It smells like Band-aids I think. The only thing you need to watch is that if you spread it with a steel putty knife it will start to turn black if you work it too long, so I use plastic, or stainless steel to spread it. It comes it a nice wide range of colors too, and if it gets dry you just add a drop or three of water and mix it up again. Great stuff.JP

Good glue bottle from an unexpected source!

Good glue bottle from an unexpected source!

this glue bottle has a brush hidden inside with an adjustable metal stem. The stem can be adjusted for different levels to keep the brush at the level of teh glue in the bottle by screwing a set screw on top. The brush helps spread the glue on wood with even strokes. This is a great glue bottle at a very reasonable price! God Bless,Hawg

A HOME RUN FOR ROUTER TEMPLATES

A HOME RUN FOR ROUTER TEMPLATES

09-13-2013 12:32 AM by motthunter | 9 comments »

I used this tape and had to say WOW! It is an advance for the art of router templates like i have never seen. You tear off a piece of this tape and attach it to your router template. Peel off the backing paper and place the template on the wood you want to rout. The tape holds strong and when you are done, you pick off the template and it pops off with zero adhesive left on the wood.. No more scraping adhesive, no more lacquer thinner to remove the adhesive, no more crazy sanding. This...

Citristrip stripping gel

Citristrip stripping gel

Using this on my jointer rebuild. It works really good on metal but not sure on how it works on wood. You need to take your time let the product do the work and be patient. I scrubbed it after letting it sit. If you dont get it all of you may need to put a little more on and let that sit. A little paint thinner will help clean it up also.Good luck if you need to strip something.

Big results from small purchase

Big results from small purchase

For $4, this was a throw away purchase. I was buying some other items, so why not? Little did I realize that someone had invented a much better mousetrap! This thing works as advertized. It spreads glue evenly and easily and cleans up quickly. I haven’t tried the paddle yet, but I suspect that it works as well. This isn’t a big thing, but it it definitely will replace all but my largest glue spreaders.
