Homemade veneer flattening solution
18 days ago by RBWoodworker | 6 comments »
I recently purchased a veneer pump, and got some veneer along with the deal.. but the veneer that I got, was rolled in a protective paper and left for who know’s how long.. it took the curve of the roll well and would not lay flat no matter what I did.. I put it between two platens and left it for 3 weeks and that did not do the trick…SO.. Lee Jesberger has this solution on his website prowoodworkingtips.com and it consist of 1 gallon of water..8 oz. of pure glycerin which is avai...

I’m really sort of an old tools kind of guy, and therefore I’m never very enthusiastic when the time comes to use a poly finish. As a matter of fact, I lurk on another list where we refer to this stuff polyurinate. I’ll use shellac or French Polish in a heartbeat. Now, I’ve used the Minwax poly by the gallon for past projects, and I first picked up a quart of the Minwax water based poly from the big blue bigbox store in order to finish out a client’s library t...
Very Impressive Adhesive

This is the first time I’ve used a hide glue and I must say that I am very pleased with everything about it. I have always used TiteBond glues in the past but this is a far superior glue (in my opinion) than the others. It stays where you apply it, does not run or drip like other TiteBond glues, and gives you more time for complicated glueups. Many times in my projects, I apply glue with a toothpick in mortises and again on their matching tenons. This glue rolls easily off the pick, lea...
Rust Remover & Preserver for South Africans
6 days ago by PG_Zac | 2 comments »
I can’t speak for it’s wood finishing / polishing properties, but MAN it’s fantastic for removing rust !!!.Here in a very rural area in South Africa, I have no easy access to large stores of any kind, let alone a specialist woodworking store. I’ve never seen Boeshield or the other products many LJ’s use for protecting their machines, I doubt that they are even in the major centers in S.A. I had a problem with rain on my Bandsaw – here is the upper guide...
My Critter Spray gun

Hi Guys. I don’t know if I’m doing this right or not. There was a previous review of this gun and I just wanted to give my review as well.Came across Woodgal’s entry about the Critter so I read more reviews from Amazon. Got my Critter Sprayer from Amazon for $33.81 free tax/shipping.Got 12 regular mouth Ball mason jars from our local Stater Bros. supermarket for around $10.Filled 1 with blue tinted water (used food coloring) just for practice, 1 with clear water for cleani...
Made the switch

After using almost a whole tub (1lb) of SC Johnson paste wax in the last year or so, I caught Renaissance wax on sale at Woodcraft this month and reluctantly bought a can. I say reluctantly since the street price of this stuff is 26 bucks for 200ml or 7 fl. OZ. Little can for 26 or big ole pounder for 8. Ability to buy at Borg or local department store (blue, biggest in the world) or have to buy at specialty shops or order online. You can see my apprehension. But after the rave reviews b...
K-Grip Siphon Spray Gun aka Critter Spray Gun

This is a review of the following http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=17858&filter=critter%20spray I have had this for a while, and it was $40 when I bought it, it’s $50 now. I primarily use this for spraying interior latex paint on furniture. This gun has a bad rep, but I like it. Yes, it makes a cloud—wear lung protection. I mix the paint with water, pop it on the compressor, set it to 40psi (I have a little pancake compressor) and spray small projects. I ...
What a mess!!

It as gotten cold here in the great white north (Toronto Canada). I still am able to work in my non insulated shop but it is hard to keep it above 15 C for optimal gluing condition. I read that Gorilla glue as a much better tolerance for cold and since what I was working on was purely decorative and had no structural function I decided to try it. First I was shocked by the price 12.99 for a rather small bottle. Then I read the instruction which suggested wetting the surfaces before applying ...
Amazing Product

I checked this out after reading mjon’s review on this. I always liked using bees’s wax paste but was willing to try the spray. So, I looked on the internet and found it. The Original Bee’s Wax. Well let me tell you I cleaned my kitchen cabinets and then waxed with the Bee’s wax and they came out great, but, the best part of this product is when you use it on glass and granite or marble tops. Last year I renovated our bathroom and put in shower doors but the glass gets...
The Beall Wood Buff
371 days ago by odie | 17 comments »
Every time I make a ring box I use The Beall Wood Buff. I make about 300 ring boxes a year in four different sizes. Since I have had my wood buffing system (approx. 18 months) I’ve probably used it on close to 500 boxes. I used to hand wax and buff these boxes and it would take forever. Now it takes half the time and the quality of finish is second to none. The procedure I use is quite simple. I now sand my boxes on a belt sander down to a 400 grit. Then I apply one coat of tung oil and le...
