I’ve had this DVD in my collection for a few years and today was the rainy day that I guess I’ve been saving it for.Doug Stowe goes into great detail on making several different styles of boxes as well as many different joints , machine set-ups , jigs, sleds , etc., etc.. Full of useful tips and nothing is rushed : )I enjoyed all 120 minutes of the DVD including his way of finishing the boxes. I forgot where I got this copy , but it says $19.95 US and $24.95 CAN on the label....

There is more here than meets the eye

There is more here than meets the eye

I’ve always admired Chris Schwartz so when his new DVD came out I ordered it. I have never built anything exclusively with hand tools. Could be laziness or not enough confidence it would be worth my efforts. When I started watching the DVD, little subtleties crept in that really didn’t make any difference whether you were building with hand tools or “the new technology”. Those subtleties have certainly added to my knowledge on how to choose, lay out and and jus...

Great Video Well Worth the Price

Great Video Well Worth the Price

02-17-2013 at 07:30 AM by PittsburghTim | 6 comments »

I have purchased several woodworking videos in the past and have been generally pleased, but this one was very helpful. I knew a number of the things from reading other sources, but see it first hand takes some of the remaining mystery out of it for me. I like Chris’ sense of humor and value his opinion on tools and such. This video is great for someone who does not have much experience with tuning up a plane an nobody around to teach them. He takes you from the purchase of a used...

Great video on saw sharpening

This afternoon I finished watching “Sharpening your handsaws with Ron Herman” on Shop Class on Demand from Popular Woodworking. It’s an online streaming version of the DVD of the same name. I enjoyed it so much and feel like I learned so much from it that I’m going to order a copy of the DVD to keep when my subscription runs out. Ron Herman is a traditional housewright in Columbus, OH, and the owner of Antiquity Builders. They specialize in period accurate home buil...

Nice Intro to Arts & Crafts Furniture Making

Nice Intro to Arts & Crafts Furniture Making

My wife and I both love Arts and Crafts furniture and as we get the funds to replace our old, kid-destroyed furniture we have pretty much decided that this is the style we want go with. So, I bought this DVD (actually a DVD-ROM for your computer) to get started. The whole thing is in PDF format and when you first open it on your computer you are greeted with an interactive menu organized by room; living room, dining room, bedroom along with other links to finishing, joinery (7 different art...

The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan (2008)

I just recently purchased a lathe and have been looking at videos and tutorials online about turning. I went to the library closest my office to see if they had any good turning books and found a DVD instead. The DVD is put out by Taunton for Fine Woodwoorking and is called “The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan.” http://www.amazon.com/New-Turning-Wood-Richard-Raffan/dp/1561589578/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1350571992&sr=1-1&keywords=turning+wood T...

After getting back into woodworking after a layoff of more than 25 years, I bought the recently published Back Issue Library from Shop Notes. As advertised, the DVD contains the first 120 issues of Shop Notes. I am still going through the various issues. The cover of each issue is displayed for you to browse or…Search by title, article summary annd index only or…Search full article text (including title, article summary and index) With that said, I typed in “workbench&...

Dave Richards makes SketchUp easy

Dave Richards makes SketchUp easy

I have been using SketchUp now for about two years. As I look back on my progress learning this complex and amazing software program, I have come to the conclusion I went about it the wrong way. Often, I would start a model and as I ran into a problem, I would search the internet for the solution. I was learning in small bits and pieces – never taking the time to participate anything that would resemble formal lessons. I think many other woodworkers learn the program the same way. I decide...

Alone in the Wilderness

If not for the viewing of this very interesting documentary woodworking may have never gotten into my blood as strong as it has. This documentary is many things in one, part nature hike, part meditation, part woodworking…..and in all parts a wonderful journey of a man that decided to live his life his own way. Richard Louis “Dick” Proenneke (born May 4, 1916 – April 20, 2003) was a retired highly skilled mechanic living in Alaska that took his modest nest egg and decided ...
