I’m about finished making my TV stand. During the construction of the top, I thought there must be some formula to determine the overhang of the top. When I asked this question on LJ, I received a variety of answers but nothing with a formula. Since asking this question and designing my TV stand I came across a DVD produced by Lie-Nielsen called Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design. It discusses the proportions of furniture and how to determine the proportions of a piece of furnitur...

I received this DVD set courtesy of Passion for Wood and Lumberjocks. I have completed the first DVD and most of the second one. There are several in the set, for a total of nearly 10 hours of instructions on table saw safety and use. Hendrik provides clear instruction on setting up the table saw, showing how to adjust the blade, the riving knife, safely cross cutting, etc. It is great for a beginner like myself. Hendrik speaks clearly and plainly, so he is easy to understand. You can w...

First I want to say thank you to Hendrik Varju for giving this very fine, 5, yes, I said 5, DVD’s as a gift to the fine pages of Lumberjocks. Also, thank you Cricket for setting up things for all and any of us to be the proud owner of this type of prize. I want to say, almost 11 hours, yes, 11 hours of the many different, and intricately detailed how-to’s, and explanations of how and why’s of the fine art of Mortise and Tenon Joinery. WHEW, that was a mouthful. I hope I sa...

When it comes to woodworking, I often feel like I am working my way backwards. I was proficient with a tablesaw before I picked up my first handsaw. I knew my way around a drum sander before learning how to use a smoothing plane. And perhaps most disturbingly, I was creating and building my own furniture before I knew anything about design. Heck, who am I kidding? I still know nothing about design! I know what I think looks good and I follow a few basic rules, but more often than not I ...

I’ve had this DVD in my collection for a few years and today was the rainy day that I guess I’ve been saving it for.Doug Stowe goes into great detail on making several different styles of boxes as well as many different joints , machine set-ups , jigs, sleds , etc., etc.. Full of useful tips and nothing is rushed : )I enjoyed all 120 minutes of the DVD including his way of finishing the boxes. I forgot where I got this copy , but it says $19.95 US and $24.95 CAN on the label....

Do you like quirky? (I DO!!!) Do you like unpretentious honesty? (I DO!!!) Do you like to get interesting and rock-solid insights into how an expert does his finishing? (I DO!!!) I got this DVD for a recent birthday. I put Charles Neil DVDs on my wishlist and actually got one. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and learned a LOT. For example, I never really knew much about grain filling techniques… and now I am looking at remnants of red oak wanting to give it a shot. When m...

Hi LJs! I took advantage of the nice price and purchased the digital download: I couldn’t be more satisfied watching it, being able to see somebody who masters his craft in such impressive way is delicious to say the least. In the compass Peter builds in the video, one of the legs is “inside” the other one, that is, to form the pivot joint, well, the way he gets this left me with no words, he doesn’t use sofisticated tools, CNC or fancy devices, ONLY his blacksmi...

So you think your a handplane expert

This is a review of the DVD Bench planes by Jim Kingshott. Jim is a lifelong woodworker who comes from a line of wood workers going back many generations. This video is full of knowledge about how to use hand planes for bench work. The video starts out with Jim fetteling a modern #8 Bailey pattern plane. He explains the operation and adjustment of the plane in detail and sharpens the blade. He then moves on to a wooden jack plane and finally to a Norris Infil plane. He uses the va...
