Thomas J MacDonald DVD Series Project 1 - The Toolbox

Thomas J MacDonald DVD Series Project 1 - The Toolbox

01-08-2010 05:21 AM by Karson | 8 comments »

I’d like to review a 2 DVD set that was created by Major League Woodworking by Thomas MacDonald. Tommy is a member of LumberJocks. He also has his own Web Site majorleaguewoodworking.com On the web he has forums where you can post questions and also your projects that you’ve created at mlwwoodworking.com/forum This DVD is making an item called “The Toolbox” Project 1. I’m assuming that this is going to be a series of woodworking projects all created by Tommy. In his easy going style you...

Fundamentals of Inlay DVDs

Fundamentals of Inlay DVDs

I’ve had the recent opportunity to spend some serious time with Steve Latta’s three DVD set produced by Lie Nielsen. Many of us are inspired by the great inlay work of traditional furniture, but find it intimidating to begin cutting little grooves and the like into our newly created masterpiece. So we often pull up short, and fail to finish the piece with the inlays it calls for. Or, we can try the trial and error method at our peril. Neither is necessary any longer. These videos show yo...

SketchUp Guide for Woodworkers

SketchUp Guide for Woodworkers

SketchUp Guide for Woodworkers DVD (The Basics) Dave Richards, the narrator of this DVD, is an authorized SketchUp trainer and he draws plans for Fine Woodworking Magazine. A very talented man indeed; however, in his vast knowledge and computer skills he has forgotten that a huge percentage of his audience is in the well over 50 category that grew up with slide rules and mechanical adding machines long before the computer age. In Dave’s fast paced narration, he does not annunciate hi...

Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books

Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books

“If you can’t finish, you can’t build” This is the comment Charles Neil made to me when I first meant him last year. By now many of you know who Charles Neil is and that he is on a mission to teach other woodworkers what he has learned from over 30 years as a professional woodworker. His latest DVD set that he just released is called Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books. As you can see from the picture above this a 10 DVD set. There is about 15 hours of information on ...

Lyle Jamieson - Bowl Basics, The Easy Way

Lyle Jamieson - Bowl Basics, The Easy Way

Over the weekend, I get a e-mail notification from Wood Magazine that they have a new service where you can purchase and download video tutorials. You can find the service here. While this review is not about Iamplify, I would highly recommend it. While the price is the same as the DVD and the quality isn’t quite as high, there is something to discovering a tutorial you like and then being able to watch it 20 minutes later without having to go to the store or wait for the video to be de...

MLW Tool Box DVD and Grand Slam Tools 4-PAK Holiday Special

12-12-2009 04:55 PM by FlWoodRat | 8 comments »

Fellow Lumberjocks, Tommy MacDonald at Major League Woodworking has done it again. Tommy is offering his first MLW DVD and the Grand Slam Tools 4-Pak as a Holiday Special for only $100. I’m very happy to have taken advantage of the opportunity. Yesterday I received my set. As expected, it was impecably packaged. Since Tommy’s 4-Pak (Bench Bat, Marking Gauge and two 1:6 paring blocks) has already been reviewed here, I will focus on the MLW Tool Box Project #1 DVD. The DVD is ...

Alone in the Wilderness

Alone in the Wilderness

If not for the viewing of this very interesting documentary woodworking may have never gotten into my blood as strong as it has. This documentary is many things in one, part nature hike, part meditation, part woodworking…..and in all parts a wonderful journey of a man that decided to live his life his own way. Richard Louis “Dick” Proenneke (born May 4, 1916 – April 20, 2003) was a retired highly skilled mechanic living in Alaska that took his modest nest egg and decided ...

I really wanted to like this video

I really wanted to like this video

I won this video in a LJ’s contest last fall, which happens to be right when I was moving from MN to CO, so watching the video was not a high priority. I finally sat down to watch it this weekend, and it bordered on painful. Full disclosure, I only watched the first 2 hours of the 4 hours of the DVD and have a pretty good understanding of working w/ jointers and planers. So the first 15 minutes is him telling us what he does at his shop followed by a scenic tour of I assume the cou...

Turning Furniture Parts by Charles Neil

Turning Furniture Parts by Charles Neil

09-09-2009 12:30 AM by mikega | 5 comments »

Turning Furniture Parts is Charles Neil’s latest DVD series. This is a 2 volume set that includes 4 DVD’s. The title of volume 1 is “The Basic – a Foundation”. This volume is designed for the woodworker who wants to step their furniture building up notch and has not done any turning before or for the turner who has not done much spindle turning. He begins with an overview of the lathe and then moves onto the different chisels and how to use them. Don’t worry...

A Disappointing and Amateurish Effort

A Disappointing and Amateurish Effort

08-17-2011 03:02 PM by 12ftguru | 14 comments »

When I first ordered the “American Woodworker: 25 Years of Issues” DVD I was pretty excited. I am fairly new to American Woodworker and I had only been reading a year or two. I was really looking forward to exploring the back catalog for interesting articles and ideas. Unfortunately, the product itself has been a real disappointment. My first big beef with these DVD’s is the incomprehensible decision to put all of the magazine issues in Adobe’s Flash format. Adobe makes a perfectly good...
