Great DVD on the Jointer and Planer

Great DVD on the Jointer and Planer

1943 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 13 comments »

I heard about this DVD over at Matt's Basement Workshop. I hadn’t hear of Hendrik Varju before that, but I’m glad I know about him now. His DVD on the power Jointer and Planer is one the best woodworking DVDs I’ve watched. It covers all of the techniques you need, to get the most out of your Jointer and Planer. If you are new to using these machines, I highly recommend this DVD. I wish I had had it when I first bought my Jointer and Planer. Many of the mistakes I made ...

After getting back into woodworking after a layoff of more than 25 years, I bought the recently published Back Issue Library from Shop Notes. As advertised, the DVD contains the first 120 issues of Shop Notes. I am still going through the various issues. The cover of each issue is displayed for you to browse or…Search by title, article summary annd index only or…Search full article text (including title, article summary and index) With that said, I typed in “workbench&...

Ian Kirby's "The Way to Woodwork" 3 DVD set is a big disappointment

Ian Kirby's "The Way to Woodwork" 3 DVD set is a big disappointment

451 days ago by dckchk | 5 comments »

I purchased the three DVD set “The Way to Woodwork” for use as a partial “instruction manual” for my grandsons to use with a full workshop that I have recently provided them. After reviewing all three videos in this set I must say I am very disappointed. I found the universal “critical path” description to be a sensible way to describe a basic woodworking methodology. However, as it is laid out in these DVD’s, it is not successfully developed. Fur...

Woodworkers Guild DVD

Woodworkers Guild DVD

I was quite irritated when I received this unsolicited DVD by mail. The offer is to review and keep for $12.95 or return post paid. I almost stuffed it in the return envelop and return it unwatched but decided to take a look. After viewing the very good instructional dvd I kept it and will receive future dvd’s in the series to review. This may be the best instructional dvd I’ve seen. Excellent production quality along with clear and concise instruction. The instructor gives great ...

I’d like to review a 2 DVD set that was created by Major League Woodworking by Thomas MacDonald. Tommy is a member of LumberJocks. He also has his own Web Site majorleaguewoodworking.com On the web he has forums where you can post questions and also your projects that you’ve created at mlwwoodworking.com/forum This DVD is making an item called “The Toolbox” Project 1. I’m assuming that this is going to be a series of woodworking projects all created by Tommy. In his easy going style you...

Back Issue Library

Back Issue Library

I just received the Woodsmith Back Issue library. I gave it a 4 stars because it doesn’t give you full search capability of all issues. When you start it on your computer it comes up in a window in your browser. On the first page is all of the 200 covers for all 200 issues. You can click on a cover and go to that issue. Once you are there you have to go through it page by page, and there is no search capability when in an issue. On the main page is a search section and you can ...

Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books

Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books

“If you can’t finish, you can’t build” This is the comment Charles Neil made to me when I first meant him last year. By now many of you know who Charles Neil is and that he is on a mission to teach other woodworkers what he has learned from over 30 years as a professional woodworker. His latest DVD set that he just released is called Finishing A to Z Beyond the Books. As you can see from the picture above this a 10 DVD set. There is about 15 hours of information on ...

Turning Furniture Parts by Charles Neil

Turning Furniture Parts by Charles Neil

Turning Furniture Parts is Charles Neil’s latest DVD series. This is a 2 volume set that includes 4 DVD’s. The title of volume 1 is “The Basic – a Foundation”. This volume is designed for the woodworker who wants to step their furniture building up notch and has not done any turning before or for the turner who has not done much spindle turning. He begins with an overview of the lathe and then moves onto the different chisels and how to use them. Don’t worry...

Fundamentals of Inlay DVDs

Fundamentals of Inlay DVDs

999 days ago by RogerBean | 8 comments »

I’ve had the recent opportunity to spend some serious time with Steve Latta’s three DVD set produced by Lie Nielsen. Many of us are inspired by the great inlay work of traditional furniture, but find it intimidating to begin cutting little grooves and the like into our newly created masterpiece. So we often pull up short, and fail to finish the piece with the inlays it calls for. Or, we can try the trial and error method at our peril. Neither is necessary any longer. These videos show yo...
