Woodworker's Edge "Techniques" DVD's Cabriole Leg

Woodworker's Edge "Techniques" DVD's Cabriole Leg

01-12-2010 03:43 AM by Karson | 2 comments »

Last fall I went to visit Chuck Bender's shop and to meet Glen Huey Glen is the Senior Editor for Popular Woodworking Magazine. Glen was teaching a class on a Tea Table that belinged to his mother and had been in his home for as long as he could remember. The plans have been published in Popular Woodworking Magazine. This review has nothing to do with the table. It’s just a lead in to me meeting Glen. A great guy and of course Chuck is also. While I was there chatting with Glen...

"Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design"

"Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design"

When it comes to woodworking, I often feel like I am working my way backwards. I was proficient with a tablesaw before I picked up my first handsaw. I knew my way around a drum sander before learning how to use a smoothing plane. And perhaps most disturbingly, I was creating and building my own furniture before I knew anything about design. Heck, who am I kidding? I still know nothing about design! I know what I think looks good and I follow a few basic rules, but more often than not I ...

Thomas J MacDonalds 2nd Video, Shaker Inspired Step Stool

Thomas J MacDonalds 2nd Video, Shaker Inspired Step Stool

02-25-2010 11:47 PM by Karson | 10 comments »

Thomas MacDonald has created his second Video. It’s available on his web site for $40.00 (Price change $30.00) and a package deal with DVD #1. This stool is Shaker inspired and it’s presented in the typically Tommy style. He’s recording this in real time and because he’s working with wood, there are no do-overs. He’s showing you how to hand cut dovetails and he tells you not to make a mistake and then he does it and says that’s not what you are suppose t...

A good video for beginning handplaning

A good video for beginning handplaning

01-08-2012 02:27 AM by Tennwood | 1 comment »

I am just getting into hand planing and got this video for Christmas along with both Schwarz’s and Garrett Hack’s handplane books. I found the video well made and edited for an instructional video. Schwartz is articulate and obviously very knowledgeable about handplanes. The following quote from book seller site well summarizes the production of this video – “This DVD doesn’t simply spout off a new idiosyncratic way to work with bench planes. Instead Schwarz e...

Digital Copies of Wood Magazine

Digital Copies of Wood Magazine

04-04-2010 04:36 AM by Karson | 13 comments »

I bought the Wood Magazine digital archives, which contains all issued from 1 to 195. Years 1984 to Dec/Jan 2009/2010. It’s very easy to use. It’s made to be run from the DVD, but in doing so it has a speed problem. DVD drives are not as fast as hard drives. I copied it to my hard drive making a folder called “Wood Magazine” and copied all of the data from the DVD to this folder. It’s around 7 GTB of data and it ran fine. No problems. So that improved the s...

Woodworkers Guild DVD

I was quite irritated when I received this unsolicited DVD by mail. The offer is to review and keep for $12.95 or return post paid. I almost stuffed it in the return envelop and return it unwatched but decided to take a look. After viewing the very good instructional dvd I kept it and will receive future dvd’s in the series to review. This may be the best instructional dvd I’ve seen. Excellent production quality along with clear and concise instruction. The instructor gives great ...

Improper sales / marketing techniques

Improper sales / marketing techniques

02-24-2012 08:37 AM by BigBear | 27 comments »

About three months ago I received a notice from this company claiming to have sent me a DVD and wanting me to either return it or send them $12.95. I never received anything from them. But, even if I did, according to the post office it would have been a gift from them and I would be under no obligation. I have asked them to quit, reported them to the post office and the BBB. So far, nothing has worked. They keep on sending demands for money. I have learned that this is one of several ...

A Disappointing and Amateurish Effort

A Disappointing and Amateurish Effort

When I first ordered the “American Woodworker: 25 Years of Issues” DVD I was pretty excited. I am fairly new to American Woodworker and I had only been reading a year or two. I was really looking forward to exploring the back catalog for interesting articles and ideas. Unfortunately, the product itself has been a real disappointment. My first big beef with these DVD’s is the incomprehensible decision to put all of the magazine issues in Adobe’s Flash format. Adobe makes a perfectly good...

What the heck does that plane do...

What the heck does that plane do...

I’ve been going through my woodworking videos and rewatching them while I work out on the exercise bike. This one by Jim Kingshott is a wonderful video that takes you through the use of almost every specialty plane you could encounter. This video complements his bench plane video that I reviewed previously. I own most of the handplane related videos on the market other than ones by Rob Cosman. For some reason, I do not own a single video from Rob. I guess have a similar reaction t...

Combining Power Tools and Planes

Combining Power Tools and Planes

10-06-2011 04:08 PM by WayneC | 7 comments »

This DVD is another one filmed in the mid 90s and makes the argument of why would would want to use handplanes to augment your power tool woodworking. In the video he uses modern manufacture planes from the 90s such as a crappy stanley #4 stanely, #92 and 60 1/2 block plane. I was not really in favor of his advise and techniques and feel the video is so so. I would recommend videos from KingShott, Schwarz, Charlesworth and perhaps Cosman over this video. Topics coveredTuning a #4Sh...
