Charles Neil’s Finishing A – Z Beyond the Books is a DVD set that EVERY woodworker should have. it is packed with i think about 15 hours of finishing on 10 DVD’s and it is so thorough. the two whole DVDs are just on preparing for the finish and sanding and i thought that there wasn’t much to know about sanding and preparing to finish but after Charles goes through it i just thought wow. even on preparing for a finish i learned a lot. then there are three DVDs on ...

The Master Techniques of Marquetry

The Master Techniques of Marquetry

2164 days ago by SteveKorz | 7 comments »

I bought this DVD to gain a better understanding of Marquetry. I was very impressed with Silas Kopf’s methods of teaching his craft. Silas described multiple methods of marquetry and parquetry in his DVD. To watch him work gave me an exponential amount of knowledge. I don’t know that I would have obtained all that knowledge if I just read a book or looked at pictures. The back of the DVD case says: Silas Kopf demonstrates the most important ways marquetry and inlay have ...

Hands down the best Table Saw DVD out there.

Hands down the best Table Saw DVD out there.

I reviewed Hendrik’s DVD (Jointer and Planer Secrets) a while ago and was very pleased with it. When Hendrik came out with a new DVD on Table Saws, I was very interested in getting. At first the price of $94.95 CDN, might seem a little high, but what you get makes it worth every penny. I really wish I had this DVD when I bought my first table saw! This is a 5 DVD set and it has almost 10 hours footage. As with his Jointer DVD set, Hendrik always focuses on safe operation of the t...

This is a must have DVD for every wookworker..It's not just for furniture designers

I’m about finished making my TV stand. During the construction of the top, I thought there must be some formula to determine the overhang of the top. When I asked this question on LJ, I received a variety of answers but nothing with a formula. Since asking this question and designing my TV stand I came across a DVD produced by Lie-Nielsen called Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design. It discusses the proportions of furniture and how to determine the proportions of a piece of furnitur...

I got a chance to pickup the new DVD by Chuck Bender titled Dovetailing Apprenticeship at a recent woodworking show. This DVD picks up where all the others left off . Chuck walks us through everything from tools needed , sharping his way, layout and cutting them .The production and quality of this DVD is clear and concise . Runtime is a long one hour & fifty minutes chock full O’dovetails . That’s right I said chock full O’dovetails not to be confused with chock full O&...

Handplane Basics - A Better Way to Use Bench Planes

I’ve written a review of the DVD Handplane Basics – A Better Way to Use Bench Planes by Christopher Schwarz. I highly recommend this if you are interested in learning more about bench planes and their use. My high rating is also based on my experience with the customer service at Popular Woodworking’s Woodworker’s Bookshop. Check out my full review here on my personal blog. As I post this (3/20/10) I noticed that it’s currently on sale. Not sure how long th...

CHARLES NEILS IT'S ALL ABOUT COLOR DVDs

My long awaited DVD set, Charles Neil’s,” It’s All About The Color”, that I ordered a while back, came today. I’m suppose to be in the shop right now, but thought I would watch just one of the 6 DVDs . It didnt work out that way… I’m watching #3 right now. What’s it about? It covers waterbase finishes and how to get the color you want from each one. One DVD for 6 of the main woods: cherry, oaks, maples, walnut, poplar and mahogany. It’s great...

Fundamentals of Inlay: Stringing, Line & Berry DVD By Steve Latta

Fundamentals of Inlay: Stringing, Line & Berry DVD By Steve Latta

I was really not going to buy the Tool kit but when it included the DVD by Steve Latta who actually was the one responsible for the development design with lie-Nielsen I decided to pull the trigger and invest in the kit. For me the DVD was worth the entire cost of the kit and the tools were the added bonus Steve spoke slow enough to leave time to grasp the topic and made each step clear. When explaining a new term he was easy to understand. Each section flowed seamlessly to the next and was l...

So you want to be a Manly woodworker....

So you want to be a Manly woodworker....

I have been getting more interested in carving utilitarian items lately. I have been carving some spoons thinking of branching out some. I picked up this video to get a broader overview of working with green wood. First of all I would say this is an excellent video that exceeded all of my expectations. Jogge takes you through making a dough bowl and a wooden spoon from beginning to end. He demonstrates selection of materials and then takes you through every step demostrating tools, ...

Another manly man video

Another manly man video

1015 days ago by WayneC | 4 comments »

In this video, Rob covers taking a piece of rough lumber to finished state. The topic covered is similar to Chris Schwarz’s Course, Medium and Fine. One key item that distinguishes this video is Rob’s use of the scrub plane. This is one of the few videos I have seen where this plane is used fairly extensively. Most other folks I have seen use a jack plane for this work…. He spent to me what was an amazing amout of time getting one face flat enough to work. He used ...
