Over the weekend, I get a e-mail notification from Wood Magazine that they have a new service where you can purchase and download video tutorials. You can find the service here. While this review is not about Iamplify, I would highly recommend it. While the price is the same as the DVD and the quality isn’t quite as high, there is something to discovering a tutorial you like and then being able to watch it 20 minutes later without having to go to the store or wait for the video to be de...

I’m about finished making my TV stand. During the construction of the top, I thought there must be some formula to determine the overhang of the top. When I asked this question on LJ, I received a variety of answers but nothing with a formula. Since asking this question and designing my TV stand I came across a DVD produced by Lie-Nielsen called Unlocking the Secrets of Traditional Design. It discusses the proportions of furniture and how to determine the proportions of a piece of furnitur...

Another manly man video

Another manly man video

In this video, Rob covers taking a piece of rough lumber to finished state. The topic covered is similar to Chris Schwarz’s Course, Medium and Fine. One key item that distinguishes this video is Rob’s use of the scrub plane. This is one of the few videos I have seen where this plane is used fairly extensively. Most other folks I have seen use a jack plane for this work…. He spent to me what was an amazing amout of time getting one face flat enough to work. He used ...

Another great DVD. this sugar chest DVD is jam packed with so much woodworking knowledge on the sugar chest that Charles Neil is passing on to us. It is a 4 DVD set and goes through every little detail. the good the bad and the ugly. it goes through everything from lumber selection, to milling, construction, and the finished product. As i stated earlier this DVD does really show the good, bad, and ugly. as Charles always says he’s going to show everything and even on a couple of small m...

The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan (2008)

The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan (2008)

I just recently purchased a lathe and have been looking at videos and tutorials online about turning. I went to the library closest my office to see if they had any good turning books and found a DVD instead. The DVD is put out by Taunton for Fine Woodwoorking and is called “The New Turning Wood with Richard Raffan.” http://www.amazon.com/New-Turning-Wood-Richard-Raffan/dp/1561589578/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1350571992&sr=1-1&keywords=turning+wood T...

Quickest path to quality results

Quickest path to quality results

I have recently taken an interest in making wooden planes. I did the usual browsing around and found some free content with the basic ideas. I made a few planes based on some youtube videos and other articles. It went pretty smoothly. The problem is the planes sucked. While well constructed adjustment was always an issue and they required a lot of tinkering to get right. Then I happened upon Scott Meek and learned he produced a video on how he makes his smoothing plane. I purchased the dig...

Great introduction to Japanese hand tools!

Great introduction to Japanese hand tools!

Who doesn’t like pine? It’s inexpensive, abundant, it looks great and the smell reminds me of the air freshener in my car. But the best thing about pine is how easy it is to work with hand tools, making it the ideal material for a project done in the old-timey style. And that’s just what you’ll see in the new video series from Fine Woodworking: “Country Pine Hutch with Andrew Hunter”. ( For more articles, videos and woodworking goodness check out our new website at Stumpynubs.com! ) And...

Forgotten Hand Tools - DVD Review

Forgotten Hand Tools - DVD Review

This is a great DVD, although the title is, in my opinion, a little misleading. I would instead title this work, Forgotten Hand Tool Skills and Techniques. In this DVD, Schwarz focuses on three skills/techniques: (1) gimlets, hammers, and nails (i.e., using the correct type of nails as fasteners); (2) drawboring; and (3) handsawing (and using a shooting board). Schwarz discusses the history of each skill/technique and then explains the relevance of these skills/techniques to modern woodw...
