Woodworker's Edge "Techniques" DVD's Cabriole Leg

Last fall I went to visit Chuck Bender's shop and to meet Glen Huey Glen is the Senior Editor for Popular Woodworking Magazine. Glen was teaching a class on a Tea Table that belinged to his mother and had been in his home for as long as he could remember. The plans have been published in Popular Woodworking Magazine. This review has nothing to do with the table. It’s just a lead in to me meeting Glen. A great guy and of course Chuck is also. While I was there chatting with Glen...

DVD - The Last Word On Sharpening - Review

DVD - The Last Word On Sharpening - Review

511 days ago by Nazair | 2 comments »

In his opening comments Christopher Schwarz states how confusing the subject of sharpening is to new woodworkers, and that so many different methods, products and options on the market make it worse. This was exactly how I felt. The ninety minutes he spends talking while hands on in this DVD have been a great addition to my other research. I’ve spent many an hour online and browsing different books on this subject. He doesn’t single out any one method, but comments on the good...

Excellent primer on how to take advantage of your hand planes.

Excellent primer on how to take advantage of your hand planes.

Rather than re-summarize, I will simply agree with the first review about the content and utility, and note that while there’s no earth shattering information, it’s an excellent combination of common sense and history. The video covers plane usage, including the history, the mechanism and the results, as well as discussing plane irons and other details in moderate depth (for example, why some irons have more camber). I have 3 Schwarz videos, and this is probably my favorite. ...

Good Video for Beginners

Good Video for Beginners

Recently bought this DVD at Woodworkers Source to help me improve my jointing and planing skills. There are a lot of helpful tips on the video. My favorite is how to mill out cupped, bowed, crooked and twisted boards. If your learning how to use a jointer and/or a planer this will be a helpful tool to have in your arsenal of knowledge. There are other DVD’s in this series that are for the tablesaw, bandsaw, lathe, and shaper. Good deal for $20.

A good video for beginning handplaning

A good video for beginning handplaning

I am just getting into hand planing and got this video for Christmas along with both Schwarz’s and Garrett Hack’s handplane books. I found the video well made and edited for an instructional video. Schwartz is articulate and obviously very knowledgeable about handplanes. The following quote from book seller site well summarizes the production of this video – “This DVD doesn’t simply spout off a new idiosyncratic way to work with bench planes. Instead Schwarz e...

Highboy DVD by Glen Huey

I bought this DVD about a year ago and have found it to be one of the best DVD I have viewed. This was made before Glen went full time with Popular Woodworking. It has over 3 1/2 hours of instruction plus many extras including step by step photos and complete plans. One of my favorite thing about Glen’s DVDs is he shows many ways to do the same procedure. He hand cuts dovetails, cuts them on the bandsaw, and with a jigsaw. Also some very nice finishing information.I used this DVD as the basis ...

Like we've come to expect, an A+ DVD!

Like we've come to expect, an A+ DVD!

as the title states this is an A+ DVD. as we’ve some to expect it is very thorough also. one thing that the DVD talks about is lumber selection. about knots, working with them, the boards themselves, the grain and everything in between then preparing the lumber, and don’t get worried that it will all be big tools. Charles uses only a tablesaw and planner for most of the milling process. he also uses a drum sander but that can be substituted for a planer. then with all the...
