Acrylic Lathe Dust Hood

Acrylic Lathe Dust Hood

I caught this on sale for 20 bux. Original price is 30. Anyone who turns a lot of pens would benefit by having this. A very nice way to collect dust while spinning pens, pencils, bottle stoppers, and/or any small spindle type turnings. Wood or acrylic project pieces, the chips get sucked right out of your way. I don’t think it would work very well for turning a bowl because of the way it wraps around the project piece. It is very easy to remove since it mounts with some pretty stout mag...

iVAC Automatic Blast Gate System

iVAC Automatic Blast Gate System

02-04-2017 06:34 PM by JerryinCreek | 1 comment »

I thought of adding an automatic blast gate system to my shop every time I forgot to open/close a gate. (I actually thought I’d stop doing that, but I didn’t.) Then I saw the review by pintodeluxe (aka, Willie) and I decided to do some more research and eventually purchased the system through Infinity. The technician at iVAC (Dave) was extremely knowledgeable and always courteously responded to my questions, from pre-purchase to set up. I started by mounting a piece of 3/4̶...

Karcher WD5-P Vacuum

Karcher WD5-P Vacuum

I thought I would go ahead and post a review since I asked in the forum if anyone had experience with this vacuum and I didn’t get any response. For the cost it wasn’t going to end up being a huge mistake so I went ahead and took the plunge and ordered one from Amazon. I would have purchased from the local Woodcraft but when I called them nobody could tell me anything more about it than what I saw in the documentation and didn’t seem interested in checking for me even thou...

Impressive for a small shop

Impressive for a small shop

I work out of a 2-car garage that can barely hold one car because it’s filled with woodworking crap, and it’s a brand new car so I don’t want it constantly covered in sawdust, nor do I want the rest of the garage covered in sawdust, which is how it’s been for a while. I use mostly hand tools but I have a bandsaw, miter saw, sanders, etc. and my dust collection system is just me with a leaf blower out an open garage door. So I bought this thing off amazon for about $...

Start With the Switch, Expand Later

Start With the Switch, Expand Later

I was shopping for a remote control for my cyclone dust collector, and came across the iVac Switch. It can function as a remote-control only unit, used with manual blast gates. There are a few companies that make D.C. remotes, but with the iVac you can expand it to fully automated collection. You need one tool sensor and one blast gate for each tool you want to automate. That is when the magic happens. Just turn on your tool, and first the blast gate opens automatically, then the dust ...

Oneida conversion kit filter cartridge

Oneida conversion kit filter cartridge

10-30-2016 06:03 PM by mikeswoodshop | 4 comments »

I have an older Oneida DC (1.5 hp) with internal cartridge .. inside the separator. This model is no longeroffered and I needed more power as my shop grew. Oneida offered (for a price ! ) a conversion kit to allowthe cartridge to be located outside the separator and advertised it to “increase flow”. Luckily when originally ordered, I opted for the muffler thus I already had the outlet fitting tangent to the fan housing. This allowed for an easy installation of the ” conv...

Ridgid 14 Gal - Wet Dry Vac

Ridgid 14 Gal - Wet Dry Vac

My 25 year old Craftsman shop vac finally gave it up and started making weird noises and electrical smell… time to pull the plug on it. I looked over various Ridgid vacs and decided on the 14 gal. 6.0-Peak HP Wet Dry Vac. I know that there was a more powerful and larger vac but this one fit the size I needed and the cost was not too bad ($100). The one I got has the blue filter which is for fine dust but not HEPA rated. Things I like about this vac— —It is quieter...

Oneida Dust Deputy Cyclone

Oneida Dust Deputy Cyclone

The SDD replaces a “Frankenvac” HF through a Thein separator to a plastic barrel, using Rockler quick-connects to each tool. I replaced the HF impeller with the Rikon, and what a difference! I am blessed to be able to just vent outside, so fine filtration is not a concern. The assembled collection corner is amazingly quiet, and has quite a lot ( don’t have the ability to measure airflow) of suction – even on the far end where the SawStop lives. I read of so...

Oneida Super Dust Gorilla - 5 HP

Oneida Super Dust Gorilla - 5 HP

Several months ago, I purchased a new dust collector. Before, I had a Jet 1.5 HP dust collector with a cartridge filter and vortex cone. It did an OK job and was piped into my shop with 4” PVC. My measurements of the flow at the dust collector were 670 CFM at the 6” port and only 450 CFM at the 4” port. The maximum static pressure was 10.25” Inside my shop, the flow was greatly reduced. I decided that I needed something bigger to collect more of the dust and so looked at a number of t...

Outside Venting

Outside Venting

The picture posted by Ty is almost exactly the way I have my system set up. I have the exhaust connected to a standard 4” dryer vent and due to the Super Dust Deputy, I would say the dryer puts out more lint than my dust collector puts out saw dust. These are fantastic! I’ve seen many set ups, but using a short piece of 4” hose to connect the SDD to the trash can is the way to go for ease of can removal. I’ve seen guys (and gals) come up with all kinds of methods t...
