Reviews: Dust Collection

Close to true cyclone performance on a budget.

Close to true cyclone performance on a budget.

I have been getting a few questions about the Thien Cyclones I have been building, and figured I would write a quick review of them, and try to answer the questions I see about them.. For starters a Thien Cyclone Separator is NOT a true cyclone, but does operate in a psuedo cycloninc fashion. Meaning the incoming air stream spins around the outside of the vessel / dust bin and drops its load of dust, and larger particles in much the same way as nearly all the other separator lids do. The B...

Review of ClearVue 1800LH

Review of ClearVue 1800LH

I purchased a ClearVue cyclone 1800LH for my shop about two months ago. Had torn muscles in my shoulder, so put it up a month ago, had shoulder surgery, and finally got it wired and turned on for the first time today. First Impressions: The unit came complete, packaged extremely well. Everything labeled, wrapped, boxed, re-wrapped. I unpacked everything and nothing was dented, broken, scratched or otherwise in any condition but brand new. The system also came with a remote control and...

Great bang for the buck, but DON'T leave it stock!

Great bang for the buck, but DON'T leave it stock!

I felt it necessary to write a review of THIS specific dust collector. Many home hobby woodworkers use Harbor Freight 2HP Dust Collector to refer to the current model #97869 and the older model #45378 interchangeably. While they use a large number of the same components, and are most likely build on the same line, these are without a doubt NOT the same tool. Building on the success of the #45378, Harbor Freight had some improvements to put under the hood, and market as the #97869, many ...

Fein 9-20-24 Mini Turo Vacuum

Fein 9-20-24 Mini Turo Vacuum

I just bought a Fein 9-20-24 Mini Turbo vacuum. The features are: 6-gals, compact, quiet (60dB), variable speed, 6 wheels for stability, cloth filter bag that extracts 5 micron dust, 16’ hose and cord. You can also plug your equipment into it and when you start up you machine it automatically turns the vac on and off when using the machine. It is a little pricey but will worth it. I highly recommend this vaccum.

Rockler Lathe Dust Hood Item 67899

Rockler Lathe Dust Hood Item 67899

I’ve found this clear lathe dust collection hood very useful. It take a little bit of planning when setting it up on a lathe such as extending the tail stock support out to make room for your tool rest support and it helps a lot to have a flexible work light that can be kept low & to the rear of the lathe. This keeps the glare off of the flip-down clear shield making it easy to use, see photo. I made a wooden bracket out of the scrap end of an oak newel post, also see photo. The...

Dust Deputy

Multiple reviews already of the $99 Dust Deputy system sold by Oneida – thought I’d throw my two cents in on the $59 version that is just the cyclone sold separately. For the cost of a $5 painter’s bucket from Lowe’s and the time it takes to make a plywood lid, you have the same result as buying the complete kit with arguably a better lid/long term durability. I routed a groove in the plywood as someone else had suggested and put a layer of weather stripping in the...

New Plastic Dust Deputy Arrests Dust

New Plastic Dust Deputy Arrests Dust

114 days ago by TheDane | 15 comments »

The demo at AWFS and videos online were just too convincing … I ordered the new Oneida Dust Deputy kit ($99.00 plus $10.50 S&H). It was money well spent. The ‘kit’ comes with the plastic cyclone, two buckets, lid, hardware and hoses. The cone itself is a tough, heavy plastic, and the hose connections are tapered so my ShopVac hoses fit tight and stay put. Assembly took under 5 minutes. Instead of a copper wire and washer recommended by the manufacturer for static disc...

I have a small garage shop. For some reason my wife insists on parking right in the middle of it! This leaves me needing everything to be compact and mobile. I have no room for dust collection but learned right away after starting this hobby that dust collection is not an option, its a necessity. My shop vac wasn’t going to last long with a chronically clogged filter. Thankfully I found these guys. I bought the Mini CV06. I hooked it up to my shop vac. I lived happily ever after...

Delta 50-760 1 1/2 HP Dust Collector - Not so Pleased

Delta 50-760 1 1/2 HP Dust Collector - Not so Pleased

I see several satisified user with good reviews on this product. However it has a flaw that bugs me, and is not acceptable. I bought one new in December. The unit does a very good job with collection, is reasonably quiet and I’m happy with that. But new, right out of the box I found a problem. The rod that holds up the dust filter bag attaches to the top/side of the unit’s housing. The first time I moved the unit the rod hung on an over head beam and even though it wasnR...

I’m starting to take over the basement now that the garage is full. I promised to keep it clean, and this is a big part of that. All I have connected at this time is a lathe, but that will change. I looked at just about everything that I could go and look at.To me, this was the ideal machine. Good specs, small size, not real loud. Speaking of specs: Impeller diameter = 12” Sound rating at 3 ft (db) = 75 – 90 Air flow at 6” (CFM) = 1,064Velocity at 6” (F...
