Fantastic bit set, especially for the price!

Fantastic bit set, especially for the price!

After needing sizes that just weren’t in my Porter Cable 8 piece set, and finding out what it would cost to buy bits individually, I decided, being the cheapskate that I am, to look for a set. The big box of crayons as it were. Now I have been looking pretty seriously into the MLCS 31 piece Master Forstner Bit Set (and they ARE coming down in price) but at the list price I had first seen them at of $129.00, I was open to options. I ran accross the Fine Woodworking article that raved ...

Useful, but disappointing.

Useful, but disappointing.

I was in need of a set of decent countersinks, and my local woodworking retailers BOTH were out of stock on the options they had when I looked, so I went to Amazon, and found this Mibro set. The price was certainly low enough, so I threw it in with a larger order and took advantage of the free shipping offer. Upon receiving my set, I took the digital calipers to them to verify sizes, and found them to be reasonably accurate within .001” which is certainly acceptable. And thus far wit...

Can be made to work, but not all that great...

I am posting this so all the LJ-ers out there won’t start thinking I drank some kind of Harbor Freight Cool Aid or anything like that… A while back I acquired a Drill Master 94203 1” to 2-1/2” Hole Saw Set from Harbor Freight Tools to bore some large holes after my old Ace Hardware set was discovered missing. (Long story, problem since solved). As often as I have been using a hole saw, I figured a cheapie wouldn’t be a bad thing. I was wrong. The good. T...

A plug cutter set well worth a plug.

A plug cutter set well worth a plug.

I’ve been looking around for good value in plug cutters and as usual decided to start at the bottom of the price ladder and work my way up. It didn’t take much time to realize that there are times when cheap simply won’t “cut” it. (pardon the pun). After three products from as many different vendors all failed to impress, I landed at the MLCS website. I skipped right over their 8 piece plug cutter set as it was very similar to the Rockler product that I had al...

Quick and Easy Shelf Pin Jig

Quick and Easy Shelf Pin Jig

01-22-2009 07:28 AM by mart | 3 comments »

I ordered Rockler’s Jig It shelf pin drilling jig when I got an order for 26 feet of built in bookcases. I had never had to run this many holes (2652) before and had always used a piece of pegboard and a small vertical drill jig in the past. The Rockler jig is a clear plastic plate with a metal square tubing guide bar that registers the jig either against the inside of a cabinet or on the edge of an board for the side of a yet to be assembled cabinet. There are two rows of holes and ...

I'm a bit on the cheap side

I'm a bit on the cheap side

I recently read (in Fine Woodworking Magazine # 197, April, 2008) a review of several brands of forstner bits and decided that my Harbor Freight 7 piece set (1/4” – 1”) bought on sale for $5.00 was obsolete. That set, by the way, served me well for the money spent…as anyone who has read anything I’ve added to this sight in the past may remember, I’m really cheap… but I really needed more larger bit sizes. After reading the article, I noted that the...

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

11-02-2008 07:03 PM by ChicoWoodnut | 7 comments »

I was in need of some brad point bits to drill holes for a set of ball catches I am installing. I have been using regular twist bits and needed something with a centering guide. My set of Irwin Jennings-pattern auger bits don’t go to 1/4”. I looked at brad point bits at the Borg and didn’t like any of the ones I saw. The lip was simply a point ground into the edge of the radial cutter. It didn’t look like it would leave a clean hole on entry and that is what I am ...

My prize, Summer 2008 Contest

My prize, Summer 2008 Contest

09-17-2008 10:26 PM by Karson | 13 comments »

I won 2nd place in the LumberJock 2008 One Man’s Junk Contest. I won a Jack Rabbit Deluxe bit driver set. It arrived today and it looks great. It came in a blister pack package and it contained 4 drill bit sizes 7/64, 1/8, 9/64 and 3/32 drill bits. The countersink is 3/8 in the three lower sizes and 1/2 in the larger drill bit. It has a brass covered magnet that is quite strong. It held the wrench that is used to screw in the drill countersink assembly. The drill assembl...

Good for the price-that's it

Good for the price-that's it

Here are the bits that I bought about three months ago for some up and coming projects. I like these bits becasue they came in a huge set, I belive 16, and it was only $25. They make flat bottomed holes, angled holes, and are just very nice. They do have there downside tough. They are very hard to use if not useing in a drill press, they tend to not want to start if your useing a drill. Some of them also have a slight wobble which is not so great, but most of them are perfect. They also tend ...

DowelMax precision dowel jig

DowelMax precision dowel jig

03-21-2008 01:49 PM by Sawdust2 | 16 comments »

I’m making a Futon Sofa Bed for my grandson. While cutting the parts I was 1” short on the upper and lower rails for the end pieces. The difference was merely the tenons, not the space between the stiles. So I called Gil, my friend with the trusty DowelMax, and we took advantage of an alternate way to fasten the pieces. The DowelMax is finely engineered. You can use it to install any number of dowels in various arrangements. The video that is available gives a great tutorial on...
