1/4" drill bit extenders that work

Over the years I’ve probably purchased a half dozen different quarter-inch bit extensions all of which have failed for one reason or another. Either thay were too long or too short or too wobbly or just plain junk and end up frustrating me every time I attempted to use them. This morning I went out to check a couple of vendors that supply these devices to see if there were any improvements. The first store I checked had a set five but they were sealed in plastic and the sales clerk ...

Ok for the money.

Ok for the money.

Picked up this set at Woodcraft for about $25.00. I have used tapered bits in the past and really liked to have them to use as a quick way to drill a pilot and countersink in one step. The case is great, the bits are sharp and straight but one of the countersinks spun on the bit shaft despite my tightening of the set screws. It’s a cheap set compared to the $70.00 and $90.00 sets right beside it in the store and is better than a harbor freight job.

Easy drilling of shelf-pin holes, but a bit of a hassel

Easy drilling of shelf-pin holes, but a bit of a hassel

I needed to drill shelf pin holes for my closet remodel project. To save time I decided to purchase the woodhaven shelf pin jig and a self-centering shelf pin bit. At the local woodcraft, the only 1/4” option was this Snappy bit. It got the job done, but was a bit of a pain. The first side I drilled went rather smoothly, and I ran down the two lines in decent time. However, when I got to the second side of the shelf unit, the shavings kept getting clogged in the retracting self-...

UNIBITS

UNIBITS

Hi fellow LJ’S I know this site is about woodworking. Once in awhile even a woodworker needs to drill a hole in metal. In my case I’m building a mobile base for my table saw. I did not want to use my wood bits so I found this set on e-bay for around 40 bucks free shipping too. They are handy to have on hand when you need a straight round hole in thin metal (table saw stand). The nice case was a bonus and is durable too. Thanks Jim K. I have other Irwin products in use and...

Screw-Outs Don't Work

Screw-Outs Don't Work

http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00952154000P?keyword=52154&sLevel=0 LOML saw Bob Vs commercial and bought me a set a couple years ago. Today, 1/2” wood screws holding cabinet door hinges that have stripped out phillips heads. Guess what, Bob V can kiss my A$$! These things are supposed to bite into the screw and back it out, all they do is spin in the stripped head. Even tried an impact driver and nothing! This system won’t let me give -5 stars or I would!

Good and fast

Good and fast

I picked up the 5-piece set of these from Lowes yesterday to drill holes to run wires through floor joists. I’ll be comparing these to the last ones I had which came in a catch-all bit kit I got for Christmas years ago (they sucked). The bits bored fast. I mean really fast. I’m not sure what difference in the design that makes them bore so quickly, but it definitely made the difference. I used the 5/8” to bore through the joists at a slight angle (since I didn’t...

Exceptionally smooth countersinks

Exceptionally smooth countersinks

10-02-2009 03:42 AM by sry | 10 comments »

Woodcraft product page I had always heard that this style produces a very smooth cut, so I decided to pick some up when I was at Woodcraft. I bought the #6, #8, and #10. It really is amazing how smoothly and effortlessly they cut. The second picture I uploaded shows just how smooth these things cut (#10 is shown, but the results are typical). On the far left is the Wood River single flute countersink, middle is one from HD (can’t remember the brand), and right is from a Ryobi c...

Fantastic bit set, especially for the price!

Fantastic bit set, especially for the price!

After needing sizes that just weren’t in my Porter Cable 8 piece set, and finding out what it would cost to buy bits individually, I decided, being the cheapskate that I am, to look for a set. The big box of crayons as it were. Now I have been looking pretty seriously into the MLCS 31 piece Master Forstner Bit Set (and they ARE coming down in price) but at the list price I had first seen them at of $129.00, I was open to options. I ran accross the Fine Woodworking article that raved ...

Useful, but disappointing.

Useful, but disappointing.

I was in need of a set of decent countersinks, and my local woodworking retailers BOTH were out of stock on the options they had when I looked, so I went to Amazon, and found this Mibro set. The price was certainly low enough, so I threw it in with a larger order and took advantage of the free shipping offer. Upon receiving my set, I took the digital calipers to them to verify sizes, and found them to be reasonably accurate within .001” which is certainly acceptable. And thus far wit...

I am posting this so all the LJ-ers out there won’t start thinking I drank some kind of Harbor Freight Cool Aid or anything like that… A while back I acquired a Drill Master 94203 1” to 2-1/2” Hole Saw Set from Harbor Freight Tools to bore some large holes after my old Ace Hardware set was discovered missing. (Long story, problem since solved). As often as I have been using a hole saw, I figured a cheapie wouldn’t be a bad thing. I was wrong. The good. T...
