Nice job but it takes time

Nice job but it takes time

I bought this product because I thought it would improve the look of the pool deck I am building and although I am not finished yet I think it has. The whole purpose of the jig is too allow the user to screw down decking without showing the screw and that’s exactly what it did. My decking is made from 5/4 pressure treated boards. There are 10 joists each spaced 16 on centers and there are 2 screws per joist which gives 20 screws per board. To boards feel as if the are held down well. I ...

Ni-Cad Battery Rebuild

Ni-Cad Battery Rebuild

05-11-2011 02:57 AM by C_PLUS_Woodworker | 14 comments »

One of the things that really gets to me with the current trend to Lith-Ion batteries is that so many perfectly good tools are being trashed because buying a new drill with a new charger and 2 new batteries is not much more money that just buying replacement batteries. I personally just cannot chuck a perfectly good tool because of a battery issue, regardless of the price differential on a new tool. It goes against everything I am and how I feel towards tools that have served me well. Ex...

These should work as advertised

These should work as advertised

Just so you know, this is the first and only time I’ve ever used a Forstner bit. I’m working on a toy airplane project and believe I’ll have a need for these (I did in my first toy airplane – for the cockpit). Woodcraft has this set on sale right now for $12.49 (through 4/2/2011) so how can you go wrong? These bits come in a nice wood case. They are stamped with their size, “China”, and the max RPM on each bit. I made a couple of test cuts with the...

MT2 Drill Chuck

MT2 Drill Chuck

03-12-2011 10:33 PM by ChunkyC | 10 comments »

Harbor Freight 1/2in MT2 Mini-Lathe Drill Chuck I purchased one of these last week based on a posting from LJ member Hairy. I paid $14.99 + shipping which is a good price for drill chucks with the arbor! A high precision chuck it’s not and this chuck isn’t going to win any contests for the best chuck of the year but it does make a good chuck for woodworking. The chuck that I had for my DP wouldn’t chuck up smaller bits so I needed to do something. I’ve been lo...

Hooray for Harbor Freight and to heck with Fastenall

Three years ago I bought a cheapy set of drill/countersinks. The bits broke almost immediately, so I thought I would get some quality bits and went to the Fastenall store in Lancaster, Ca. He had to order them. I sent the wife in to pick them up, three weeks later. Four packages of ten bits each, $54.00!!!! I nearly choked, but a deal is a deal and I did want a good quality bit.The only good quality that I got was the plastic containers which I still use for my replacement bits. lolI could no...

Garbage bits

Garbage bits

12-06-2010 03:56 AM by Drew | 20 comments »

I bought these bits as I was walking out the door of Lowe’s, remembering I was out. Unfortunately Lowe’s doesn’t carry Irwin, so I bought these. I broke 4 of them the first hour of my work day. These bits are ok in a cordless drill, but a joke in an impact. 2 stars.Pros, they fit nice. Cons, worthless in an impact. Stick with Irwin or DeWalt.

Kawasaki Titanium Coated 99 piece set of drill bits

Kawasaki Titanium Coated 99 piece set of drill bits

Hello LJs, I saw this Kawasaki Titanium Coated 99 piece set of drill bits a Costco for $19.99. Kawasaki? Drill bits? I knew they made motorcycles, but drill bits? Then I thought they must be good drills if Kawasaki made them. After all, my nephew rode their bikes to a national championship in Hound n’ Hare cross country desert racing on The Green Team ;-)) But I was still a bit leery. Costco doesn’t sell garbage, but $19.99 for 99 drill bits? There are a lot of small replacement f...

Yet another time wasted disappointment.

Yet another time wasted disappointment.

Here we go again. This 6 inch capacity SO CALLED self-centering jig from TASK-USA or Telco tools is another example of lousy workmanship.Another so called made in the USA centering jig that’s off by unacceptable tolerances. If I wanted this kind of inaccuracy, I would use the drill press witout my glasses. They claim their jig is within 10000 –5000 tolerance, I guess they need to get back to school or learn to use a calculator. 10000 is = 0.0001 and 5000 = 0.0002.My measurement shows 1/100 =0...

So far....What a Disappointment.

About near two decades ago, I purchased a Dowel-it 1000 which I’ve used almost on every other project. It was made in USA and 100% accurate. And it’s held up to a half a dozen drops and what have you with just slight calibration after all these years. Awesome jig. Behold the new so called USA made dowel-it 2100. it has a 6 inch capacity and Two removable bushing screws with 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8” sizes two each. and the 7/16 and 1/2 are permanent. I purchased this for a pro...
