This is the last nail in B&D’s coffin where I’m concerned. I saw this set in my local hardware store and thought it would be a handy thing to have in the van – you know, just in case.I managed to bore three holes before the first drill bit snapped in half. The driver bits are good for about a dozen screws before they round off at the tip. The drill bits that don’t snap are very poor quality – it’s almost as if the tips are ground off centre, they want t...

Combination Hex Drill\Tap Bits: Easy Installation of Threaded Knobs and Rod

Combination Hex Drill\Tap Bits: Easy Installation of Threaded Knobs and Rod

Maybe I just fell off the lumber truck, but I didn’t know about combination hex drill\tap bits. You don’t have to install a brass insert! Or, drill and then tap threads?! Do it all in one easy operation! Directly into wood with a low voltage driver!! I have threaded a lot of brass inserts for the jigs I’ve built, like my Rip Snorter Push Block , and thought they were a pain. And, I have read about and used various methods for installing inserts. They work, but they a...

Rockler Jig It Drill Guide - Video Review

Rockler Jig It Drill Guide - Video Review

If you don’t have a drill press, (or even if you do) the Jig It Drill Guide by Rocker is a great little jig. For those who don’t have a drill press but want to use forstner bits; the drill guide helps keep your power drill steady allowing for more precise holes. For those who do have a drill press there are certain times when it’s just not possible to use it. I needed to drill some bench dog holes into my workbench. I wanted to use a forstner bit with my power drill. The Jig It Drill G...

Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives

Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives

Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives I think the Kreg Jig system is one of the best products that Kreg came out with.By saying that personally I have a problem, the Kreg does not exist in my country so I always have to import from overseas (via air freight) my stock in screws.Ok, I do have a small stock in the shop but since they cost me almost double the price to stock them (especially for low budget projects) I needed to find an alternative. They way I come up with was to use the near...

A true Pocket Hole Master !!!!!

A true Pocket Hole Master !!!!!

Well, I’ve resisted buying one of these pocket hole jugs for more years that I can recall mainly because, I never thought I would ever use one and I don’t use screws when making fine furniture. Shop jigs and Tables get a screw here and there but not too often. Any way while I’ve been watching this thing for years, the prices on this have gone up so much the last few years so I decided to get one before it hits the 80+ mark. I didn’t even want to consider the other pocket hole jigs. Right fro...

Good jig but the whole package could use a little polish. Also can be used as a doweling jig.

I bought the Kreg Shelf Pin Jig not to drill evenly-spaced holes for shelf pins (though I do also plan to use it for that later), but rather as a jig to accurately drill holes for dowels. First I cut a shim to go between the alignment fence and the piece of wood that needed dowel holes. I clamped the shelf pin jig in place, drilled a couple holes, then moved it over and used the included alignment pin to set up the next hole to be drilled. If you want to use this as a doweling jig, you ...

Outstanding countersink/bit combination

Outstanding countersink/bit combination

02-19-2013 03:32 AM by Rick M. | 12 comments »

Over the years I’ve tried a number of countersink + drill bit brands, most use a replaceable bit but they are all pretty mediocre and few lasted a year. I’ve owned this Dewalt set for several years and they still perform like the first day I brought them home. Some folks believe combination bits are gimmicky, preferring to use separate products but these might change their mind. Not only do the countersinks perform flawlessly, the tapered bits are exceptional and probably the best...

 Flexible and accurate dowel work.

Flexible and accurate dowel work.

I’m quite enamored of dowels as joinery, especially in cabinet construction. Fast, accurate and plenty strong enough if used with good technique, tooling and materials, they also allow me flexibility in appearance of the finished case without too much fuss. However, I do not own a doweling jig. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have a Dowel Max, but with all its accessories to be more costly than the price of a used motorcycle, well, no thanks. Besides, all doweling jigs ar...

Right on the Mark

Right on the Mark

02-17-2013 07:49 PM by clieb91 | 11 comments »

As some of you know I make a lot of peg games and one of the things I hate the most about making them is having to clean up the drill holes. Well I have found the solution to that problem. MicroMark Double Land Brad Point Drill Bit. I found these in a catalog for model building that my grandfather had given me and they claimed to make the a clean cut hole in all woods. My games are mainly made with standard pine and I was a bit skeptical but at around $19 for a set (see pic 1) I figured it...
