Irwin Max Speed Speed Bore bit

Irwin Max Speed Speed Bore bit

I borrowed one of these from a carpenter in our crate shop at work and was really impressed with how fast and clean it cut. So when I saw them at Ace Hardware I picked up a 3/4” one. Tonight I broke it out to drill some add’l holes in my bench. I like it a lot. It ate up the hard Maple like it was pine. Pros:1. Pilot grabs hold and pulls the bit right through the wood.2. The three cutting edges really cut fast. They are very sharp.3. Both the entry and the exit holes...

My Kingdom for a Set of Antique Center Bits

My Kingdom for a Set of Antique Center Bits

01-13-2017 08:48 PM by Ron Aylor | 11 comments »

As you may or may not know, I recently completed a hand crank drill press inspired by a drawing of one reportedly depicted in Siever’s ‘Il Pianoforte…” 1868.         I thought it only fitting to have a set of antique center bits to accompany my new/old drill press. Well, we all know these are had to come by. So, my next best option was to find something to emulate those wonderful old bits, and spade bits seemed like a logical solution. Most of the spade bits I examined though had rather s...

Finally Tamed It... Lee Valley Dog Holes Bushing and Bits

Finally Tamed It... Lee Valley Dog Holes Bushing and Bits

02-12-2016 02:15 PM by Scheol | 6 comments »

I recently needed to drill 18 round 3/4” dog holes in my Paul Seller pine workbench and because all my bench accessories are Lee Valley/Veritas I opted for their Dog Holes and Bushing kit (http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=72602&cat=1,41637). Out of the box the bit was incredibly sharp and had very pronounced spurs. The fit with the bushing is good and I could only notice a very slight play. I made my first jig to help drilling the front row of dog holes...

Craftsman Drill guide

Craftsman Drill guide

01-22-2016 07:18 PM by hairy | 10 comments »

I used to buy a lot of Craftsman, then for a while I wouldn’t buy anything Craftsman. I probably would not have bought this, except that they were the only local retailer that had 1 in stock. I saw several online, but due to my poor planning I didn’t have time to wait for shipping. I needed it to drill holes into wall studs for floating shelves. I used 3/8” x 8” lag bolts to support the shelves. Once before I tried that without a drill guide. It did not end well. ...

They are finally here...

They are finally here...

7/1/2015 – I will clean them up and start reviewing them tonight or tomorrow. All I know right now is they are very oily and the tips are covered in plastic. They will be rated 1 star until I find out different. More later… 7/2/2015 – Just got done testing 4 bits. Each bit was used to drill 5 holes. When the holes were measured each was small by 1/128-1/256. The dial calipers I used also come from Lee Valley. Since a woodshop is not a machine shop I am totally happy with ...

Great cutting bits

Great cutting bits

06-20-2015 07:48 PM by DKV | 9 comments »

I bought this set of drill bits because I was always needing a bit a tad larger or smaller than the bit I had available. This is a set from 1/16 to 1/2 inches by 1/64th. It’s the “by 1/64th” that I bought the set. Now I can easily go a tad bigger or smaller. The bits cut very clean holes entry and exit but all new bits probably do. The real test comes after a year or so of use. These bits get 4 stars until I see them holding their edge after a year’s use.

Lee Valley Veritas 'lipped' HSS Wood Drill Bits

Lee Valley Veritas 'lipped' HSS Wood Drill Bits

I selected three of these – the two-hundred dollars for a complete set in 64’s was out of my range. As other reviewers noted, they are SHARP. Thus, be careful removing the plastic covering they ship with – I cut myself pulling it off the half-inch bit. As well, if you purchase individual bits – as I did – have a case ready fr them or plan on building one to protect them. Don’t use them in wood where nails may be present – as I did – for once ...

Poor Bit Ruins a Nice Jig

Poor Bit Ruins a Nice Jig

05-21-2015 05:37 PM by pintodeluxe | 5 comments »

I have used large acrylic shelf pin drilling jigs in the past, which worked fine. Some models are actually too big to fit in an existing cabinet, so the small size of this unit was appealing. After all you can use the index pin and cut as many holes as you need. The plastic template itself works fine. It is well thought out, and has some nice features. The “clamping zone” should be longer, because the clamps sometimes interfere with the drilling operation. The indexing pin...

Finally, I can make dowels

Finally, I can make dowels

03-06-2015 04:04 AM by LJackson | 9 comments »

I have been trying to make my own device for making dowels, following some ideas I picked up on YouTube. These attempts have not gone over very well (read, epic fail). So, I had given up and instead purchased this fine product. To be thorough, I purchased the master set, which includes all of the inserts needed to create dowels from 1/4” to 1” in 1/16” increments. There are quite a bit of steps involved in setting it up for a particular size, and several trials are necess...

Porter Cable 4.5" Cordless Angle Grinder: Revised

Porter Cable 4.5" Cordless Angle Grinder: Revised

Had a break in the middle of my project because I’m waiting on some parts, so I decided to review one of my recent tool purchases. I bought it at Lowes for $35. Tool buying tip: go find a sale online and ask the cashiers to price match. Lowes has a price +10% guarantee. Then you get another 5% if you put it on your Lowes credit card. See my video review:
