So VERY Thankful no one was hurt!!

This could have easily become the most expensive tool in the shop! We bought this adjustable circle cutter a few weeks ago at Harbor Freight. Seemed like it’d be a useful little tool. I’d set it up once on the drill press and used it to drill a test hole on a piece of pine. The arms sticking out spinning around made me kind of uneasy so I switched to a hole cutting saw bit. My husband set the cutter up today on the DP and was using it. One of the cutters came loose during operatio...

A great forstner bit set from a big box store

A great forstner bit set from a big box store

751 days ago by bobasaurus | 41 comments »

I made a trip to Lowes and bought this 14-piece forstner bit set . I needed the larger sized bits for a project I’m working on, so I just bought the entire set to prevent future bit hunting. I also have a small Rockler 8-piece forstner set and a Rockler power bore bit set to compare with. These Porter Cable bits are much better than the Rockler forstners at removing chips due to the wide flutes that extend to the top (power bore bits are still the best at chip removal, though), so I ...

A true Pocket Hole Master !!!!!

A true Pocket Hole Master !!!!!

Well, I’ve resisted buying one of these pocket hole jugs for more years that I can recall mainly because, I never thought I would ever use one and I don’t use screws when making fine furniture. Shop jigs and Tables get a screw here and there but not too often. Any way while I’ve been watching this thing for years, the prices on this have gone up so much the last few years so I decided to get one before it hits the 80+ mark. I didn’t even want to consider the other pocket hole jigs. Right fro...

82 Degree Countersink - great for dog holes

82 Degree Countersink - great for dog holes

660 days ago by lysdexic | 25 comments »

Just an FYI: I needed to chamfer all the dog holes and the parallel guide holes on my bench. I have a cheap countersink from Lowe’s for the parallel guide holes but it sucks. Talk about chatter. At the end the holes look more like ten point stars. I thought about a round over bit in the trim router but I still need a good countersink. Then I saw this in the Lee Valley catalogue. It even mentions dog holes. Free shipping and it was a deal. Smooth! No chatter. No ...

Kawasaki Titanium Coated 99 piece set of drill bits

Kawasaki Titanium Coated 99 piece set of drill bits

Hello LJs, I saw this Kawasaki Titanium Coated 99 piece set of drill bits a Costco for $19.99. Kawasaki? Drill bits? I knew they made motorcycles, but drill bits? Then I thought they must be good drills if Kawasaki made them. After all, my nephew rode their bikes to a national championship in Hound n’ Hare cross country desert racing on The Green Team ;-)) But I was still a bit leery. Costco doesn’t sell garbage, but $19.99 for 99 drill bits? There are a lot of small replacement f...

Screw-Outs Don't Work

Screw-Outs Don't Work

http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00952154000P?keyword=52154&sLevel=0 LOML saw Bob Vs commercial and bought me a set a couple years ago. Today, 1/2” wood screws holding cabinet door hinges that have stripped out phillips heads. Guess what, Bob V can kiss my A$$! These things are supposed to bite into the screw and back it out, all they do is spin in the stripped head. Even tried an impact driver and nothing! This system won’t let me give -5 stars or I would!

Garbage bits

Garbage bits

1327 days ago by Drew | 20 comments »

I bought these bits as I was walking out the door of Lowe’s, remembering I was out. Unfortunately Lowe’s doesn’t carry Irwin, so I bought these. I broke 4 of them the first hour of my work day. These bits are ok in a cordless drill, but a joke in an impact. 2 stars.Pros, they fit nice. Cons, worthless in an impact. Stick with Irwin or DeWalt.

Hooray for Harbor Freight and to heck with Fastenall

Hooray for Harbor Freight and to heck with Fastenall

Three years ago I bought a cheapy set of drill/countersinks. The bits broke almost immediately, so I thought I would get some quality bits and went to the Fastenall store in Lancaster, Ca. He had to order them. I sent the wife in to pick them up, three weeks later. Four packages of ten bits each, $54.00!!!! I nearly choked, but a deal is a deal and I did want a good quality bit.The only good quality that I got was the plastic containers which I still use for my replacement bits. lolI could no...

Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives

Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives

Kreg Pocket Hole Screws Alternatives I think the Kreg Jig system is one of the best products that Kreg came out with.By saying that personally I have a problem, the Kreg does not exist in my country so I always have to import from overseas (via air freight) my stock in screws.Ok, I do have a small stock in the shop but since they cost me almost double the price to stock them (especially for low budget projects) I needed to find an alternative. They way I come up with was to use the near...

My new bosch PS20 pocket driver

My new bosch PS20 pocket driver

1483 days ago by lanwater | 18 comments »

This is a tool I picked up 2 weeks ago after my 18V power driver would not charge anymore.I originally set to buy a Dewalt from Lowes but ended up buying the Bosch PS20. While shopping there, I noticed they had the smaller footprint driver I have seen in many magazines. As an owner of other Bosch tools I decided to grab the Bosch PS20. Using it last week during assembly of one of my project was a delight. I liked it so much I decided to share a good tool with the LJ community. The packa...
