DowelMax precision dowel jig

DowelMax precision dowel jig

I’m making a Futon Sofa Bed for my grandson. While cutting the parts I was 1” short on the upper and lower rails for the end pieces. The difference was merely the tenons, not the space between the stiles. So I called Gil, my friend with the trusty DowelMax, and we took advantage of an alternate way to fasten the pieces. The DowelMax is finely engineered. You can use it to install any number of dowels in various arrangements. The video that is available gives a great tutorial on...

My prize, Summer 2008 Contest

My prize, Summer 2008 Contest

I won 2nd place in the LumberJock 2008 One Man’s Junk Contest. I won a Jack Rabbit Deluxe bit driver set. It arrived today and it looks great. It came in a blister pack package and it contained 4 drill bit sizes 7/64, 1/8, 9/64 and 3/32 drill bits. The countersink is 3/8 in the three lower sizes and 1/2 in the larger drill bit. It has a brass covered magnet that is quite strong. It held the wrench that is used to screw in the drill countersink assembly. The drill assembl...

I'm a bit on the cheap side

I'm a bit on the cheap side

24 days ago by Shopsmithtom | 9 comments »

I recently read (in Fine Woodworking Magazine # 197, April, 2008) a review of several brands of forstner bits and decided that my Harbor Freight 7 piece set (1/4” – 1”) bought on sale for $5.00 was obsolete. That set, by the way, served me well for the money spent…as anyone who has read anything I’ve added to this sight in the past may remember, I’m really cheap… but I really needed more larger bit sizes. After reading the article, I noted that the...

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

Lee Valley Brad Point Bits - Set of Seven

33 days ago by ChicoWoodnut | 7 comments »

I was in need of some brad point bits to drill holes for a set of ball catches I am installing. I have been using regular twist bits and needed something with a centering guide. My set of Irwin Jennings-pattern auger bits don’t go to 1/4”. I looked at brad point bits at the Borg and didn’t like any of the ones I saw. The lip was simply a point ground into the edge of the radial cutter. It didn’t look like it would leave a clean hole on entry and that is what I am ...

Good for the price-that's it

Good for the price-that's it

Here are the bits that I bought about three months ago for some up and coming projects. I like these bits becasue they came in a huge set, I belive 16, and it was only $25. They make flat bottomed holes, angled holes, and are just very nice. They do have there downside tough. They are very hard to use if not useing in a drill press, they tend to not want to start if your useing a drill. Some of them also have a slight wobble which is not so great, but most of them are perfect. They also tend ...

They drill holes

Website I love working with screws. They are cheap, hold very well and can be hidden from sight when countersunk and plugged. When I saw these bits at HD . . . I said “that is what I need.” Details – from Wolfcraft• Top quality precision tool that will drill, countersink, and counterbore in one easy operation. • For use with portable drills and drill presses • Countersink also allows flathead screws to sit level with the wooden surface and is adjustable allowing f...

Don't buy forstner bits individually.

Don't buy forstner bits individually.

Got this twelve piece set about a year ago and they are great bits. To be fair I have never used other forstner bits but I have not complaints about these. The hex-shaped shank is very nice for a no-slip fit in the chuck. I can imagine there is a lot of torque on a 2” forstner bit so that hex-shape will help tremendously. They cut a very clean hole with a flat bottom except for the small point in the center. I would estimate is about a 1/16” of an inch. I have even used t...

DeWalt countersink set--almost really good

DeWalt countersink set--almost really good

280 days ago by KDL | 1 comment »

The quick-change driver is easy to use and does it’s job well. The countersinks cut a fine divet—the cutters are small, which gives a clean cut, but they do clob easily, so take a moment to brush them off between holes. The only weak point is the bits. They are brittle and have very little depth-of-hole adjustment. I broke them quickly, but found better replacement bits at a big box store. For the price, it’s a decent set, but having bought them, I would now spend the ...

Great Assortment

Great Assortment

280 days ago by Chris | 0 comments »

This arrived as a surprise Christmas gift along with my Festool drill. It has a great assortment of the different bits in a easy to use and organize container. It even has multiples of the bits you would use most often. The biggest drawback to the assortment was that it was only available for a very limited time. If you add it up you do save a fair amount on the per accessory cost. Photo from the Festool Website
