UltraDeck Composite Decking material

UltraDeck Composite Decking material

04-27-2012 01:54 PM by richgreer | 5 comments »

I just completed building a deck that featured the UltraDeck composite decking material. This was my first experience with any composite decking material. In many regards, I was impressed. This is a solid, straight and true decking material. They claim it is maintenance free and I believe them. The hidden screw system works reasonably well and, once you figure it out, installation goes well. The second picture shows a close-up of the grooves in the sides of the boards. A T-s...

Ridgid MS1290LZ Sliding Compound Miter Saw

Ridgid MS1290LZ Sliding Compound Miter Saw

I am reasonably new to woodworking, if one can call getting into it seriously only four years ago as “new.” I will also note that it was four years ago that I retired from a 35-year career at a university library. Once I retired I told my wife that I wanted to get a few tools so that it would be easier to do home-improvement projects. One thing led to another and now I have a workshop full of tools. My woodworking neophyte status notwithstanding, I am not new to reviewing produ...

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

DeWalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer

I have had the opportunity to use about 4 different planers. I owned a Ryobi 12.5” for about a year and returned it because rollers wouldn’t work, They bought a Ridgid and it lasted about 3 months, same problem (Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee are same corp) Finally I bucked up and bought Dewalt after seeing this at the wood show. However I am not the average weekend woodworker being a shop teacher so minimum duty tools just dont’ cut it for me. I also had a Delta 12.5”...

Ridgid BS1400 Band Saw

Ridgid BS1400 Band Saw

10-12-2008 05:59 PM by ferstler | 36 comments »

Note: while this review is of the BS1400 model, the owner’s manual calls it the BS14002. I do not know if the addition of the number 2 signifies an upgrade or is just the full number not listed correctly in the catalog. The earlier “gray” version might have been the plain, old BS1400. In any case, the one being reviewed here is the orange version seen easily at any Home Depot store, usually selling for about $350. OK, this is a pretty basic band saw in the old style. It c...

Lathe Duplicator for Mini Lathes

Lathe Duplicator for Mini Lathes

11-22-2008 06:33 AM by Karson | 16 comments »

I’ve got this Penn State Lathe Duplicator I have mine mounted on a Ryobi Mini Lathe. I believe that it works for many brands. It’s not an all inclusive duplicator like the Vega. If you can make a pattern in something about 1/16” thick then you can fit it into the holding mechanism. Here are the Penn State templates This is a brass pattern of a small spindle that I’m making. The spindles are for a Vintage Sleigh I’m making. You mount your blank in the...

Grizzly G0462 Wood Lathe with digital readout

Grizzly G0462 Wood Lathe with digital readout

03-01-2009 06:20 AM by trifern | 32 comments »

The Grizzly G0462 Wood Lathe is an enticing machine based on it’s price point, horse power, and features. I would not recommend it. Don’t get me wrong, I have made some fairly nice pieces on it. However, I wish I had never purchased it. In one year I have replaced the belt around 10 times, replaced all bearings, replaced the tool rest, and replaced the tail stock hand wheel twice. The tail stock and head stock do not align, it vibrates, and is noisy.

Clean your House with a Ridgid Vac

Clean your House with a Ridgid Vac

12-10-2009 09:16 PM by d_webb | 22 comments »

Yeah that’s right, I clean my house with a shop vac. I recently learned that normal vacuum cleaners are a joke compared to shop vacs. Earlier this summer when my lame hoover choked on penny, I decided it was time to purchase a worthwhile vacuum cleaner. After doing some vacuum research, it appeared the best thing on the market was a Dyson. However, I was in no mood to spend $50,000 on a vacuum cleaner that has a one wheel/ball thingy (maybe in better economic times). Then it hit me, ...

Harbor Freight Dovetail jig

Harbor Freight Dovetail jig

07-26-2010 07:20 AM by Tim29 | 53 comments »

I have been wanting to get a dovetail jig for sometime now. I was up against a brick wall however. Do I fork over the bucks for a Porter Cable jig or do I buy a cheaper jig and see if it does the job for less money. I have tried this type of approach many times with many tools. Most of the time I have went on to pay for the better quality tool as well as the cheaper tool that did not work. This is not one of those times.I paid the $23 for the Harbor Freight Dovetail jig and it works pretty we...

Grizzly G0453 15" Planer

Grizzly G0453 15" Planer

06-04-2009 08:18 AM by Don K. | 43 comments »

Well As I recently stated….I did some serious upgrades in the old shop in the last few weeks, bought a new cabinet saw, new band saw, new jointer and a new planer. This first review will be over the new G0453 15” planer. (actually my second review…the jointer was a few weeks ago) I did some serious thinking about which planer to buy….but decided to go with a new Grizzly since I have had such good luck with my Grizzly jointer. While I really wished I could have went ...

Craftsman "All-in-one" Rotary Cutting Tool

Craftsman "All-in-one" Rotary Cutting Tool

I bought this tool off of Ebay a couple years ago and although the price was very good (less than $60.00) this tool just don’t “cut it” with me. First off, it’s very loud. Loud enough that you need hearing protection. Secondly, it creates a ton of dust and blows it all around, requiring respiratory protection, a shop vac, mop and bucket, as well as a shower when you’re done. So here’s some more pros and cons that I have found. PROS Plunge router base, c...
