Craftex 18" bandsaw review

Craftex 18" bandsaw review

02-29-2008 02:23 PM by Bob #2 | 28 comments »

My new 18” 2 hp bandsaw on a mobile base. The upper wheel assembly is mounted to a channel steel support doing away with the older style castings. The safety switch as well as the power switch are mounted at waist height for easy accessibility. The table is about 3 inches lower than that of my old 14” bandsaw making it more comfrtable to use for “certain ” people around my shop. The aluminum fence is mounted on ball bearings and clamps down with one hand li...

Top Saver works as advertised

Top Saver works as advertised

This is an excerpt from my blog posting about restoring my Unisaw. I thought it worked as a review. You can read the original/view the original post HERE. I would have given the product 5 stars except that while it worked much better than I expected in reality it is only as good as the amount of elbow grease you use with it. Enjoy! Where da hail did you get those glasses? You look like yo Aint Bea in Shreveport. Scrubbing away. .Top Saver first pass Top Saver 3 Honey! Top Save...

Disposable supplies

Disposable supplies

01-23-2010 06:45 PM by rustfever | 15 comments »

For some time, I tried to find something to use when working with small amounts of glues or finishing supplies. A sign painter friend told me of these ‘Souffle Cup’. We know these as sample cups when we go to the deli and are given a small sample. The cups come in many sizes, from about 1/2 oz to about 4oz and in untreated paper or plastic. The benifit of these cups are several; First, you always have a clean container into which you can put small amounts of various glues, ...

First Impressions of the 10 piece set of Japanese Chisels from Grizzly

First Impressions of the 10 piece set of Japanese Chisels from Grizzly

(Sorry for the picture, it is Grizzly’s picture of these chisels. I would have taken my own but it’s late and I didn’t realize that a review required a picture to post. Mine look just like the ones in the picture.) Well, I have been debating a long time and finally went ahead and ordered the 10 piece Japanese chisel set from Grizzly. I had read other reviews from elsewhere and I figured that I would like to try them out. I have always wanted to try out some Japanese Chis...

Craftsman Revolving Turret Doweling Jig - circa 1950's through 1970's

Craftsman Revolving Turret Doweling Jig - circa 1950's through 1970's

I don’t dowel very much, only every now and then. The same goes for biscuit joints and pocket screws… every now and then. But I wanted a jig so that when I do any more, they’ll be easier/faster/more accurate. I had been looking at all the new doweling jigs for quite some time and was not overly impressed. So I started looking at some older jigs. I thought at first I wanted a Stanley 59, but most have one or more of the drill guides missing, or are in bad shape, and som...

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

Powermatic 4224 24" Lathe

04-04-2012 02:12 PM by Jon Spelbring | 12 comments »

I bought this used, and having used it for the past couple of months, I thought I’d post a review. For background, my first lathe was a Jet Mini. I turned on that for about a year, then wanted to do larger work, so I upgraded to a Nova DVR. Both of these are excellent lathes. I have become much more serious about turning, and I’m moving toward larger hollow forms, and large platters/bowls. When I decided to upgrade (again), I researched quite a few large lathes – Robust...

Feature Loaded Tape Measure

Feature Loaded Tape Measure

09-22-2012 10:16 PM by CueballRosendaul | 8 comments »

When I die, everyone will say, “How many tape measures and flashlights does one guy need?!” Well, I’m sorry, but I carry these two items with me all day working and usually into the evening if I’m in the shop, so I’m always on the lookout. About two years ago I was in Johnson’s Workbench picking up some lumber and thinking about this huge trim project I was about to embark on while remodeling my house. Since we were already living here, the chop saw needed ...

Rockler Shelf Pin Drilling Jig (Review)

Rockler Shelf Pin Drilling Jig (Review)

02-03-2014 07:56 PM by Brett | 9 comments »

Have you ever noticed holes , neatly in a row, on the inside of many book cases and cabinets? Have you ever wondered how they might have gotten them so straight, and evenly spaced? Maybe you have, maybe you haven’t. I never really gave it much thought until I decided that I may want to attempt to build something that needed some adjustable shelving. This jig is one way that a do-it-yourselfer may be able to add those adjustable shelves to your project! It is a shelf pin drillin...

Not perfect but love the table

Not perfect but love the table

09-25-2014 03:09 AM by Ajax86 | 15 comments »

Good points: the table did not take long to assemble. Its sturdy and doesn’t move easily (but not too heavy to change its location). The price was great. Bad points: the bottom shelf was cut too narrow and it keeps falling out of the grooves. One of the drawers would not open/close because the metal drawer slide was defective. Harbor freight said they would send a replacement part out. Some of the parts that came with this table I will not use so if you would like to have my ext...

The Little Victor Plane from Lee Valley

The Little Victor Plane from Lee Valley

02-29-2008 03:15 PM by rikkor | 7 comments »

I bought this little plane mostly on a whim. I am simply amazed by how useful it has turned out to be. It is easy to use either one or two handed. It has Lee Valley quality throughout. The iron was very sharp when I got it. It has a cast iron body that just feels right. I believe the current price is about $35.00.
